Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 11.10.32
Blended reading (Sanskrit + English inline)
The word guṇa-vaiṣamyam indicates forgetfulness of Lord Kṛṣṇa, which causes one to see material varieties as separate states of existence. The living entity, being attracted to material varieties and having faith in them, is forced to experience these varieties in different material bodies, such as those of demigods, pigs, businessmen, insects, and so on. According to the karma-mīmāṁsā philosophers, there is no transcendental living entity who is the background of all existence. They accept material variety as the final reality. However, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Kṛṣṇa, is the actual basis of everything. Everything is within Him, and He is within everything. A pure devotee of the Lord sees Kṛṣṇa everywhere and sees all of the variegated modes of nature as the potency of Lord Kṛṣṇa. One who does not see Lord Kṛṣṇa will certainly see material variegatedness as the supreme reality. Such vision is called māyā, or gross illusion, and is similar to the vision of an animal. Pāratantryam means one will remain caught in the web of fruitive activities unless one gives up this superficial, separatist vision.
- Catch yourself today treating a sattvic, rajasic, or tamasic situation as ultimately real, and re-frame it inwardly as Kṛṣṇa's energy in operation.
- Refuse to rank people, jobs, or species as separately important; behind each modal variety, address the same Kṛṣṇa who is their background.
- Notice one fruitive plan you are clinging to today and consciously offer its strings to Kṛṣṇa rather than to the modes producing it.
- Which material varieties am I currently treating as the final reality, and how is that vision shaping my next birth's tendencies right now?
- Where in my day do I behave like a karma-mīmāṁsā philosopher — chasing modes of nature as if Kṛṣṇa were not the background of it all?
- When a grade, follower count, or friend-group ranking feels like the final reality today, pause and name it as guṇa-vaiṣamya before reacting.
- Refuse to size up classmates by which mode they radiate — popular, studious, edgy — and instead relate to the same soul Kṛṣṇa is backing in each.
- Pick one exam or application you are anxious about and practice offering its outcome to Kṛṣṇa instead of to the algorithm of modes you are tracking.
- In today's family or work decision, notice when you are treating sattvic options as automatically spiritual and tamasic ones as automatically evil, and re-evaluate with Kṛṣṇa as the criterion.
- Speak to your spouse or child today about one situation where the household has been chasing fruitive results, and agree on one small way to act for Kṛṣṇa's pleasure instead.
- Refuse to define your career success purely by visible variety — title, salary, lifestyle — and write down one internal measure rooted in remembrance of Kṛṣṇa.
- As bodily capacities shift between modes — energy, illness, calm — practice seeing each state as Kṛṣṇa's arrangement rather than as separate realities defining you.
- When mentoring a younger devotee or family member, point them past the modal labels of their problems to the personal Kṛṣṇa standing behind every variety.
- Loosen attachment to one legacy project this week by consciously surrendering its fruitive outcome, so your remaining years move toward dependence on Kṛṣṇa rather than on the modes.
- Mistaking the verse for impersonalism — collapsing variety into a featureless oneness instead of seeing variety as Kṛṣṇa's personal potency.
- Using guṇa-vaiṣamya talk to disengage from duties, when the verse asks you to change your vision, not abandon your responsibilities.
- Treating the warning about fruitive bondage as license to be careless, rather than as a call to act while remembering Kṛṣṇa as the basis.
- Share one situation this week where you treated material variety as the final reality; what would have shifted if you had seen Kṛṣṇa as its background?
- Where do each of you draw the line between healthy discrimination among the guṇas and the separatist vision this verse condemns?
- Is pāratantryam under the modes always negative, or can dependence on Kṛṣṇa's potency be reframed positively — debate concretely, not abstractly.
A devotee just received a job promotion (sattva-tinged success) while a colleague was demoted (tamas-tinged loss); one student plays the devotee tempted to read these as separate, solid realities, another plays a senior practitioner gently pointing them back to guṇa-vaiṣamya as forgetfulness of Kṛṣṇa — work through the conversation until the first student can act on the news without that separatist vision.
- If material varieties are not ultimately separate realities, isn't this just Vedānta monism dressed up — why call it Gauḍīya?
The verse denies that the modes are independently real, but Kṛṣṇa, the background, is the Supreme Personality of Godhead, not a featureless Absolute; variety is fully real as His potency, while pāratantryam under the modes is what the devotee transcends by surrendering to Him personally. - Modern science treats material variety as the final reality and gets results — why is that vision called māyā here?
Prabhupāda's purport explicitly likens that view to the karma-mīmāṁsā position and to animal perception; results within the modes do not contradict the verse, they confirm it — you keep getting bodies and reactions inside the same web until you see Kṛṣṇa as the basis of what science measures.
