  • punīhi — please purify
Imperative of √pū (to purify). Viṣṇu — purifier of all worlds — asks Bhṛgu to purify Him. The reversal is theological, not rhetorical: the Lord makes Himself the recipient of bhakta-prasāda.
  • pāda-udakena — with the water from your feet
Compound: pāda (foot) + udaka (water). Caraṇāmṛta of a Vaiṣṇava — the supreme tīrtha. The verse establishes the doctrinal basis for honoring a devotee's foot-water as superior to any river-pilgrimage.
  • tīrtha-kāriṇā — by him who makes pilgrimage-places holy
Compound: tīrtha (pilgrimage) + kāriṇ (maker). The doctrine tīrthī-kurvanti tīrthāni — pure devotees sanctify the holy places themselves. The verse names Bhṛgu, freshly arrived from kicking the Lord, as one such tīrtha-kāriṇ.
  • lakṣmyāḥ — of Lakṣmī
Genitive of Lakṣmī. The goddess of fortune appears precisely at the mark where Bhṛgu's foot landed. Gauḍīyas read this as proof that Śrī follows the bhakta — wherever a devotee touches the Lord, fortune settles.
  • bhavat-pāda-hata-aṁhasaḥ — of which the sins have been struck away by your foot
Compound: bhavat (your) + pāda (foot) + hata (struck) + aṁhas (sin). The kick is recast as a strike against pāpa, not against the Lord. This is the Bhāgavatam's tone of bhakta-vātsalya at full strength.
“Please purify Me, My realm and the realms of the universal rulers devoted to Me by giving us the water that has washed your feet. This holy water is indeed what makes all places of pilgrimage sacred. Today, my lord, I have become the exclusive shelter of the goddess of fortune, Lakṣmī; she will consent to reside on My chest because your foot has rid it of sins.”

Continuing his comments, Śrīla Prabhupāda says: “The so-called brāhmaṇas of the Kali-yuga are sometimes very proud that a great brāhmaṇa like Bhṛgu Muni could touch the chest of Lord Viṣṇu with his foot. But in fact, when Bhṛgu Muni kicked the chest of Lord Viṣṇu it was the greatest offense, although Lord Viṣṇu, being greatly magnanimous, did not take it very seriously.” Some editions of Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam contain the following verse between texts 11 and 12, and Śrīla Prabhupāda also includes it in Kṛṣṇa, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, his summary study of the Tenth Canto: atīva-komalau tāta caraṇau te mahā-mune ity uktvā vipra-caraṇau mardayan svena pāṇinā “[The Lord said to the brāhmaṇa Bhṛgu:] ‘My dear sir, O great sage, your feet are indeed very tender.’ Saying this, Lord Viṣṇu began massaging the brāhmaṇa’s feet with His own hands.”

Translation
"Please purify Me, My realm and the realms of the universal rulers devoted to Me by giving us the water that has washed your feet. This holy water is indeed what makes all places of pilgrimage sacred. Today, my lord, I have become the exclusive shelter of the goddess of fortune, Lakṣmī; she will consent to reside on My chest because your foot has rid it of sins."
Commentary

"If you forgive my for my offense, then let have your foot water. Purify us with your footwater which makes even the holy rivers like the Ganga more pure (tirtha karina)." Forgiving such offenses committed by Bhrgu is a sign of sattva guna. On the other hand Visnu’s pacifying Bhrgu, considering that he, the lord, is an offender of Bhrgu is a sign of suddha sattva. "But I have committed suffering to you and your dear loving Laksmi and will live in hell for a kalpa, since I, such a fallen sinful brahmana, put my foot on your chest." If he were to repent in this way, then Visnu replies, "O Muni, o ocean of mercy, you have made us both most happy today."

Jīva Gosvāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

With the aim of getting Bhṛgu to forgive him so that he could be peaceful, Viṣṇu offered excessive praise. Purify me, Vaikuṇṭha, along with the fourteen planetary systems (saha lokam) as well as Brahmā, Śiva and others and others present in me (mad-gatān). This means the living entities are within his belly (as the universal form) or that they are all his aṁśas. Sit down for a moment. I will wash your feet and put the water on my head. Instead of bhavataḥ sometimes bhagavān (O sage worthy of worship) is seen. “But I have committed a great offense and am now full of regret. How can I sit here in embarrassment?” But you have been most merciful to me by kicking me on the chest. I have now become the supreme shelter of Lakṣmī. You are capable of doing this. O sage endowed with all powers (bhagavān)! Now Lakṣmī will reside on my chest always since it has been purified by your foot. This means that (up to that time she did not reside on the son of Vikuṇṭha’s chest.

Related verses

After being kicked, Viṣṇu asks Bhṛgu for the water that has washed his feet — and tells Lakṣmī she will now sit on His chest because that foot has cleansed it. The episode flips every category: the offender becomes the purifier, the offense becomes the cosmetic, and the goddess of fortune is told to live where the kick landed.

Kṛṣṇa washing Sudāmā's feet

When boyhood friend Sudāmā arrived at Dvārakā, Kṛṣṇa Himself washed the brāhmaṇa's feet and sprinkled the water on His own head (SB 10.80–81). The water of a brāhmaṇa's foot was treated as supreme tīrtha.

The pattern is identical to Bhṛgu-pāda: Bhagavān insists that His devotees' feet sanctify Him, not the reverse. Gauḍīyas read both episodes as foundational for understanding Vaiṣṇava etiquette toward sādhus.
