  • cakame — she desired
Perfect of √kam (to love, to long for). The same root as kāma. The Bhāgavatam allows this verb of even unmarried maidens when the object is fit by Kṛṣṇa's arrangement — Subhadrā's kāma is dharmika because Kṛṣṇa is its silent author.
  • hṛdayam-gamam — the capturer of the hearts
Compound: hṛdayam (heart) + gamam (going to). One who 'enters the heart.' A poetic name for the irresistible — the Bhāgavatam often uses it of Kṛṣṇa Himself; here transferred to Arjuna, His eternal sakhā, by reflective beauty.
  • vrīḍitā — bashful
Past participle of √vrīḍ (to be ashamed, shy). The standard bhāva of a kanyā at first darśana of her destined husband. Gauḍīya rasa-śāstra catalogs vrīḍā as one of the thirty-three vyabhicāri-bhāvas, especially prominent in mādhurya.
  • apāṅgī — casting sidelong glances
From apa (away) + aṅga (limb, here corner of eye). The sidelong glance — kaṭākṣa — is the classical instrument of feminine attraction in Sanskrit poetics. Gauḍīyas savor Kṛṣṇa-kaṭākṣa as the most prized form of His mercy.
Arjuna was very attractive to women, and as soon as Subhadrā saw him, she wanted to have him as her husband. Smiling bashfully with sidelong glances, she fixed her heart and eyes upon him.

As soon as she saw him, Subhadrā knew that Arjuna was no sannyāsī but rather her destined consort. In Kṛṣṇa, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, His Divine Grace Śrīla Prabhupāda elaborates: “Arjuna, the grandfather of Mahārāja Parīkṣit, was himself extraordinarily beautiful and his bodily structure was very attractive to Subhadrā. Subhadrā also decided within her mind that she would accept only Arjuna as her husband. As a simple girl, she was smiling with great pleasure, looking at Arjuna.”

Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
Arjuna was very attractive to women, and as soon as Subhadrā saw him, she wanted to have him as her husband. Smiling bashfully with sidelong glances, she fixed her heart and eyes upon him.
Commentary

Subhadra, seeing Arjuna, attractive to all women, confirmed in her mind that he was not a sannyasi, but her lover, by his characteristics, and developed strong desire for him.

Jīva Gosvāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

He was attractive to all women what to speak of her. Seeing him she understood that he was not a sannyāsī, but someone who should be her husband. She experienced this through previous impressions and by her intuitive skill. Putting him in her eyes and heart, she desired him. She smiled out of joy and in a joking mood. She threw smiling side glances but with shyness, since she was well trained by her family.

Śrīdhara Svāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

Having heard about him from others, now she saw him directly. She fell in love with him or desired him as her husband. The symptoms of love are described. She smiled, out of love or knowing that he was Arjuna disguised as a sannyāsī. Though dressed as a sannyāsī, because he mind was agitated with love for him, she understood that he was in disguise.

Subhadrā's sidelong glance is the small key that fits a great lock — the entire union of Pāṇḍava and Yādava houses turns on it. As a glance from the gopī decides Kṛṣṇa's whole night in Vṛndāvana, here a glance from Kṛṣṇa's sister decides the next generation of Bhārata.
