  • avatīrya — descending
Gerund of ava + √tṝ (to cross down). 'Having crossed down.' The technical term avatāra is built from this root — Bhagavān crosses down from His own dhāma to ours. Gauḍīyas catalog the avatāras while reserving 'svayam bhagavān' for Kṛṣṇa Himself (CC Ādi 2).
  • vaṁśe — into the dynasty
Locative of vaṁśa (bamboo, lineage). Kṛṣṇa took birth in the Yadu-vaṁśa as the family of His mādhurya pastimes. Gauḍīyas read the Yadu-vaṁśa as a dīkṣā-line — once a member, always under the Lord's protection (cf. Bhagavad-gītā 8.6's promise extended).
  • saṁsaratām — who are caught up in the cycle of birth and death
Genitive plural participle of sam + √sṛ (to flow, to cycle). The wheel-of-rebirth. The recipients of avatāra are precisely the saṁsaratām — Bhagavān descends not for the liberated but for the still-cycling.
  • vṛjina-apaham — which removes the sins
Compound: vṛjina (sin, twistedness) + apaham (removing). Kṛṣṇa's yaśas is named vṛjina-apaha. Gauḍīyas claim this for nāma-saṅkīrtana: just hearing or singing destroys vṛjina without other rituals.
Appearing in the Yadu dynasty, You have spread Your glories, which can remove all the sins of the three worlds, just to deliver those entrapped in the cycle of birth and death.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
Appearing in the Yadu dynasty, You have spread Your glories, which can remove all the sins of the three worlds, just to deliver those entrapped in the cycle of birth and death.
Commentary

Appearing in the Yadu dynasty, You spread your fame which destroys all sin of the three worlds in order to stop the repeated cycles of birth and death of mankind (tat santyai).

Jīva Gosvāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

Related to this, you have now appeared and distribute your quality of unlimited mercy everywhere to the highest degree. Being merciful to your pure devotees, in this world you have distributed your glories more than before (vi—tene).

Śrīdhara Svāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

At this time all are delivered by your show of unlimited powers. This verse is connected the next verse. I offer respects to you, who have spread your glories. You have appeared in the Yadu dynasty on earth (iha) and have spread more than previously (vi-tene) your glories here or to the people in saṁsāra, to give them peace, extinction of saṁsāra (śāntyai). The reason is given. Those glories destroy completely (apa-ham) the suffering of saṁsāra for unlimited jīvas situated in the three worlds. Or you spread your glories for giving inconceivable (tat) happiness of prema (śāṇtyai) or for making the heart fixed in you by giving bhaki-rasa. Destruction of the suffering of saṁsāra, being a secondary result, is accomplished without effort. Your glories destroy saṁsāra in the three worlds. This agrees with the last meaning, according to bhakti.

Related verses

Bhagavān descended into the Yadu dynasty as a man enters a house — not for His sake but for the residents'. The avatāra's purpose is named bluntly: to deliver those caught in the wheel.

The fourfold purpose of avatāra

Bhagavad-gītā 4.8 — paritrāṇāya sādhūnāṁ vināśāya ca duṣkṛtām | dharma-saṁsthāpanārthāya sambhavāmi yuge yuge. Four reasons: protection of the good, destruction of the evil, re-establishment of dharma, and, the Gauḍīyas add, līlā-rasa-prakāśa.

Bahulāśva here cites the same doctrine. The verse is a small Gītā 4.7–8 in Bhāgavata format: Bhagavān descends for the saṁsarata-jīvas, His name disseminates fame that ends material existence.
