Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 10.82.9
Blended reading (Sanskrit + English inline)
-
mahā-bhāgāḥ
—
the greatly fortunate (Yādavas)
Compound: mahā (great) + bhāgāḥ (share, portion). The Yādavas' fortune is not material but bhāgyam in the bhakti sense — to have Kṛṣṇa as kinsman. This same epithet is given to Yaśodā (SB 10.9.20) and the gopīs (10.47).
-
upoṣya
—
fasting
Absolutive of upa-√vas, to abide near. Fasting in Vaiṣṇava usage is not mortification but proximity — abiding near the Lord by abstaining from sense indulgence. Ekādaśī is its institutional form.
-
su-samāhitāḥ
—
with careful attention
Compound: su (well) + samāhitāḥ (collected, focused). Samādhi-quality attentiveness applied to ordinary acts. Gauḍīyas honour this — sevā done with diffuse mind is sevā lost; only attended sevā reaches Him.
-
rukma-mālinīḥ
—
(cows) with gold necklaces
Compound: rukma (gold) + mālinīḥ (garlanded, feminine). The cows themselves are honoured as Lakṣmī-svarūpa in Vaiṣṇavism (go-mātā). Giving such cows to brāhmaṇas is the highest go-dāna — offered with the same care as worship.
At those lakes (tatra), they fasted because of the eclipse of the sun, not because of being in the tīrtha. Smṛti says muṇḍanaṁ copavāsaś ca varjayitvā kurukṣetram: at Kurukṣetra one does not shave or fast.
At those lakes they fasted. They were greatly fortunate because they were related to the Lord or they had prema-bhakti. Internally and externally they were endowed with wealth and were dedicated to dharma. They fasted because of the eclipse of the sun, not because of being in the tīrtha. Smṛti says muṇḍanaṁ copavāsaś ca varjayitvā kurukṣetram: at Kurukṣetra one does not shave or fast. Giving up playing they concentrated on their acts.
Pilgrims bathe, fast, and feed brāhmaṇas not to earn anything, but to clear the field of the heart so that what Kṛṣṇa intends to give can land there. The outer act is preparation; the inner gift is His.
