  • deva-devasya — of the Lord of lords
Compound: deva (god) + deva (god). The same title used of Kṛṣṇa in verse 18. The verse stacks His highest title against His self-described lowering before the brāhmaṇas — the same chiasmus the chapter has used throughout.
  • brāhmaṇāḥ prabhavaḥ — brāhmaṇas (are His) masters
prabhavaḥ — origins, masters. The startling doctrine: the Lord of lords subordinates Himself to His brāhmaṇas. Gauḍīya: this is not caste-rhetoric; it is the Vaiṣṇava-bhakta principle. The devotee, even more than the Lord, is the supreme refuge.
  • yajña-pateḥ — of the master of sacrifices
Compound: yajña (sacrifice) + pati (master). Kṛṣṇa is the recipient of every yajña; yet He ranks His brāhmaṇa-devotees above Himself. The chapter's theology peaks here.
  • daivam — no deity higher exists
daivam (deity) + param (higher) + na vidyate (does not exist). A flat negation. The verse closes any door for ranking another being above the brāhmaṇa-bhakta in Bhagavān's own reckoning.
Lord Hari is the God of all gods, the master of all sacrifices, and the supreme ruler. But He accepts the saintly brāhmaṇas as His masters, and so there exists no deity higher than them.

Śrīla Viśvanātha Cakravartī points out that even though Śrī Kṛṣṇa is the supreme ruler of creation, He accepts the brāhmaṇas as His masters; even though He is the God of all gods, the brāhmaṇas are His deities; and even though He is the Lord of all sacrifices, He performs sacrifices to worship them.

Translation
Lord Hari is the God of all gods, the master of all sacrifices, and the supreme ruler. But He accepts the saintly brāhmaṇas as His masters, and so there exists no deity higher than them.
Commentary

Though Krsna is affectionate to his devotees, he is famous among the people as being affectionate to the brahmanas. Krsna is the Lord (prabhoh) of all, but the brahmanas are the lords (prabhavah) of him. He is the deva among the devas, but the brahmanas are also deva (daivam) of him. He is the lord of sacrifice and worship (yajna pateh), but he worships the brahmanas. This is the meaning here.

Commentary

It is not surprising that Kṛṣṇa is affectionate to brāhmaṇas since he is Svayam Bhagavān. That is illustrated in this verse. Or, having spoken of the Kṛṣṇa’s great quality of having affection for brāhmaṇas, the particular qualities of Bhagavān are now detailed in this verse. He is to be worshipped by Brahmā and others (devadevasya). He gives the results to the brāhmaṇas and other executors of sacrifice (yajṣa-pateḥ). He is the controller of the universe (prabhoḥ). Successively these terms indicate more are more Kṛṣṇa’s suitability to serve the brāhmaṇas. That he serves them (prabhāvaḥ) is famous (vai). It is not surprising. No other deity than them exists for him. He worships them with devotion. It is impossible to worship other deities since he is attractive to all (hareḥ).

Related verses

The king of kings — He who outranks every other deity — keeps a single category of being above Himself: the brāhmaṇas devoted to Him. Gauḍīyas read this not as social rank but as the Vaiṣṇava's rank: vaiṣṇavānāṁ yathā śambhuḥ, the devotees being dearer than His own Self.

Kṛṣṇa carrying Sudāmā's slippers

Gauḍīya hagiography preserves the image (rooted in the previous chapter's events) of Kṛṣṇa personally washing Sudāmā's feet and even, in some retellings, holding his slippers. The verse Sudāmā now states as doctrine — brāhmaṇas above the Lord of lords — is what Kṛṣṇa enacted in His own household.
