Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 10.80.44
Blended reading (Sanskrit + English inline)
-
asmābhiḥ
—
by us
Instrumental plural — 'by us.' Sudāmā speaks for both of them, sustaining the dual mood of v.31-43. Gauḍīyas: the bhakta keeps the dual; he refuses to address the Lord alone in distinction from his own membership in His company.
-
anirvṛttam
—
not achieved
Past participle of a- + nir-√vṛt. What has not been completed. Sudāmā's rhetorical claim: nothing has gone unfinished, given Your company.
-
deva - deva
—
O Lord of lords
Compound vocative: god of gods. Honor-vocative — Sudāmā does not pretend friendship erases aiśvarya. Gauḍīyas: even in sakhya, the bhakta knows whom he holds the hand of.
-
jagat - guro
—
O spiritual master of the universe
Compound vocative: jagat (world) + guru. Sudāmā's specific honor — Kṛṣṇa as the cosmic guru of v.32-34 is now addressed as such. The chapter's guru-tattva loops back.
-
satya - kāmena
—
all whose desires are fulfilled
Compound: satya (true, fulfilled) + kāma (desire). Kṛṣṇa is satya-kāma — He has no unmet wish. Gauḍīyas: yet He acted as a student to honor pedagogy. The Lord's līlā includes pretending to need what He already has.
Sudāmā Brāhmaṇa wisely understands his extraordinary good fortune of having lived with Śrī Kṛṣṇa at the residence of their spiritual master. Thus whatever external difficulties they experienced were actually an expression of the Lord’s mercy, to teach the importance of service to the spiritual master. Śrīla Prabhupāda renders the learned brāhmaṇa’s feelings as follows: “[Sudāmā said:] ‘My dear Kṛṣṇa, You are the Supreme Lord and the supreme spiritual master of everyone, and since I was fortunate enough to live with You in the house of our guru, I think I have nothing more to do in the matter of prescribed Vedic duties.’”
What lack of bliss was there for us? It was completely blissful for us who lived in the gurukula with you, who act with your own desires (satyakamena). Your living in the gurukula was by your wish alone, the difficulties of wind and rain encountered while fetching wood, for teaching devotion to guru, was by your wish alone. Other than that, what power does the wind and rain have over you? The Vedas say "the wind blows out of fear of you." That we were with you there is the result of great fortune.
In two verses Sudāmā answers in brief everything. What could not be achieved by us? Everything you asked and did not ask about me has been achieved since you are the lord of the devatās and the teacher of the universe and since all your desires are fulfilled (satya-kāmena).
By doing this we attained everything. O Lord worshipped by the devatās like Brahmā (devadeva)! It is suitable to reside with the guru because, just by his will, all desires are fulfilled or all desires of the devotee are manifested immediately (jagad-guro). That has happened.
A man, asked by his oldest friend whether he lacks anything, names the very fact of having lived with him as the answer: 'What could I lack, having been with You?' Sudāmā here gives the verse the rasa-line bhaktas memorize — the relationship itself is the wealth, not anything inside it.
