Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 10.80.33
Blended reading (Sanskrit + English inline)
-
artha - kovidāḥ
—
expert knowers of true welfare
Compound: artha (true purpose, welfare) + kovida (skilled). The verse identifies the true 'experts' — not śāstric pundits but those who recognize the guru as Kṛṣṇa-instrument. Gauḍīyas: artha here is not material wealth but the soul's real benefit, kṛṣṇa-prema.
-
varṇāśrama - vatām
—
among those engaged in the varṇāśrama system
Compound. Spans the entire Vedic social-spiritual order — the guru-recognition is not sect-specific. Gauḍīyas: varṇāśrama is the platform; bhakti is what crosses it to Vaikuṇṭha.
-
guruṇā
—
as the spiritual master
Instrumental of guru. Kṛṣṇa names Himself the guru ('mayā guruṇā vācā') — and this is the verse Gauḍīyas use as scriptural warrant for caitya-guru and sampradāya-guru being one Person under two forms.
-
vācā
—
through his words
Instrumental of vāc — speech. The crossing happens through speech, not silence. Gauḍīyas note: nāma, kīrtana, kathā — bhakti is verbal, and the guru's spoken instruction is the boat.
-
bhava - arṇavam
—
the ocean of material life
Compound: bhava (becoming, saṁsāra) + arṇava (ocean). The classic Bhāgavata image. Gauḍīyas: bhava-sāgara is the ocean of repeated birth, crossed only by guru-vākya as the boat. Compare SB 10.14.58 (samāśritā ye).
One’s father is a natural object of reverence, as is a religious leader who initiates one into sacred ceremonies and instructs one in general wisdom. But ultimately the bona fide spiritual master, learned in the transcendental science and thus able to take one across the ocean of birth and death to the spiritual world — such a guru is most deserving of worship and respect, for he is the direct representative of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, as stated here.
In this verse he speaks of how the third guru delivers the student from the material world. Certainly, they are most knowledgeable of the highest truth among all the people in the asramas, who by the words of the guru who teaches about me, who is my very form (maya gurna) , just by teaching my mantra (vaca), easily (anjah) crosses over the material ocean.
Nanu means certainly. By this knowledge (vijṣanām), by bhakti, one attains the happiness of crossing the material ocean, as a by-product of bhakti.
A boatman crossing a river: the boat is the guru, the river is saṁsāra, and the words of the boatman steer the craft. Kṛṣṇa says: those who recognize the guru as Myself, and take My words spoken through him, cross easily. Everyone else flounders.
At Gayā, the young Viśvambhara received initiation from Īśvara Purī — and from that moment the future Mahāprabhu was a different person, weeping at Kṛṣṇa's name. Caitanya-caritāmṛta records the moment as the turning-point of His public līlā.
Gauḍīyas read SB 10.80.33 in this light: Bhagavān Himself accepted guru-ordering. If Kṛṣṇa-Caitanya accepts, no one is exempt. Mayā guruṇā is the doctrinal cornerstone of the sampradāya.
