  • tri-nava-rātram — for thrice-nine nights
Compound: tri (three) + nava (nine) + rātra (night). Twenty-seven — the count of nakṣatras, suggesting a complete cycle of time. The battle exhausts a full sidereal round before the Lord Himself arrives to conclude it.
  • tumulam — tumultuous
From √tum — uproarious, swelling. The Bhāgavatam's standard word for righteous battle-noise; Gauḍīyas note that even in such tumult Kṛṣṇa's name and smile remain present in the field, since His associates are fighting on His behalf.
  • ulbaṇam — fearsome
Intense, dreadful. The text does not soften the duration or the dread — devotional realism: the Yadus' war against Śālva is not made trivial because Kṛṣṇa is its silent center.
As the Yadus and Śālva’s followers thus went on attacking one another, the tumultuous, fearsome battle continued for twenty-seven days and nights.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
As the Yadus and Śālva's followers thus went on attacking one another, the tumultuous, fearsome battle continued for twenty-seven days and nights.
Commentary

They fought for twenty seven (three times nine) days and nights.

Jīva Gosvāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

The fight lasted twenty-seven days.

Concepts
Jiva

Twenty-seven days and nights, the duel sways back and forth, tumultuous and terrible. Real spiritual battles are rarely won in a single dramatic stroke; bhakti is a long siege in which the devotee, like the Yadus, simply refuses to leave the field while māyā keeps refilling its ranks.
