Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 10.72.33
Blended reading (Sanskrit + English inline)
-
mahatīm-gadām
—
a large club
Adjective + accusative. Both maces are large; both heroes equally armed. Without Kṛṣṇa's sign at verse 41 this duel literally cannot end.
-
dvitīyām
—
another (a second)
Accusative feminine. The mention of a 'second' mace underlines the parity. Jarāsandha's fairness is sincere — and yet.
-
purāt-bahiḥ
—
outside the city
Ablative + adverb. Out of Girivraja — into the open fighting grounds. The city stays intact; the captive kings in the dungeon remain alive, waiting.
"It is expected that I should satisfy the guest, please accept this huge club. I will be successful in this fight however even if you have such a big club." These words revealed his inner pride.
Jarāsandha gave (dāya) a large club to Bhīma with a smiling face (pra), offering it with his own hand (ā). He considered the large club to be good for Bhīma, since it could not be lifted. Or he gave a large club out of respect for his strength. He went outside the city in order to make the arena and so that the citizens could see his strength and sporting.
The kṣatriya code stages a duel like a wedding: matched weapons, equal ground, public witnesses. Jarāsandha hands Bhīma a mace identical to his own. Equality is honoured to the last detail — and the equality is precisely why the duel will reach the impasse of verse 39 that needs Kṛṣṇa's intervention.
