  • prapannaiḥ — by those who were surrendering
Prapanna — the surrendered. In Gauḍīya thought, prapanna is a higher status than mere bhakta in distress; it is the soul who has formally taken shelter. The Kurus, briefly, achieve this status.
  • su - prasannaḥ — very calm and gracious
Su-prasanna — fully pleased. The same epithet for the Lord in countless stuti verses. His rage and His grace lie close together — only a layer of pride separates them in the receiver.
  • mā bhaiṣṭa — do not be afraid
The Lord's standard reassurance to the surrendered. Same in spirit as Kṛṣṇa's mā śucaḥ in Gītā 18.66. Abhaya-vacana — the word that confers fearlessness.
  • abhayam dadau — He gave fearlessness
Abhaya-dāna — the gift of fearlessness. In Vaiṣṇava texts this is among the highest gifts the Lord bestows. He gives it freely to the surrendered Kurus.
Śukadeva Gosvāmī said: Thus propitiated by the Kurus, whose city was trembling and who were surrendering to Him in great distress, Lord Balarāma became very calm and kindly disposed toward them. “Do not be afraid,” He said, and took away their fear.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
Śukadeva Gosvāmī said: Thus propitiated by the Kurus, whose city was trembling and who were surrendering to Him in great distress, Lord Balarāma became very calm and kindly disposed toward them. "Do not be afraid," He said, and took away their fear.
Commentary

He was pleased by the kauravas, whose city (ayanaiah) was trembling (vepamana).

Jīva Gosvāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

They were completely distressed (saṁbignaiḥ) because the city was shaking and moving. Balarāma gave up his anger (suprannaḥ). He withdrew his plough from the base of the wall and restored the city.

Śrīdhara Svāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

They were completely distressed (saṁbignaiḥ) because the city was shaking and moving. Balarāma gave up his anger (suprannaḥ), because he was by nature very merciful (balaḥ). He withdrew his plough from the base of the wall and restored the city.

Related verses

The roar fades, the plough lowers, the elder smiles — 'Do not be afraid.' The same words Kṛṣṇa speaks in the Gītā (mā śucaḥ) and that Caitanya Mahāprabhu speaks again and again to every shaken devotee. Fear is taken away by the One who can also bestow it.

Mā Bhaiṣṭa: The Lord's Constant Word to His Surrendered

Kṛṣṇa says 'mā śucaḥ' (do not grieve) to Arjuna in Gītā 18.66 — after demanding total surrender. Nṛsiṁha says it to Prahlāda. Rāma says it to Vibhīṣaṇa. The Lord's most frequent line, almost a refrain across His descents, is some form of 'do not fear.'

Balarāma here speaks it to the Kurus. The pattern is unbroken: where śaraṇa is taken, abhaya (fearlessness) is given. Even an enemy who surrenders truly receives the abhaya-dāna.
