  • kauravāḥ — the Kurus
The collective name for Dhṛtarāṣṭra's sons and the wider Kuru party. Throughout the Mahābhārata they oppose the Pāṇḍavas, friends of Kṛṣṇa — this episode foreshadows that larger fracture.
  • durvinītaḥ — ill-behaved, untrained
Literally 'badly disciplined.' The Kurus apply the word to Sāmba while themselves displaying the deeper durvinīta — disrespect to a son of Bhagavān.
  • arbhakaḥ — boy, child
Dismissive — they see only youth, not lineage. Soon Balarāma will remind them that this 'child' is the son of acintya Kṛṣṇa.
  • akāmām — unwilling
The Kurus' charge. But Lakṣmaṇā herself had inwardly chosen Sāmba — the svayaṁvara was her chance to declare him. The 'unwilling' is the Kuru frame, not Lakṣmaṇā's heart.
  • balāt — by force
The same accusation Śiśupāla's faction hurled at Kṛṣṇa over Rukmiṇī. Force is needed precisely because the bride's family obstructs her chosen mate.
The angry Kurus said: This ill-behaved boy has offended us, forcibly kidnapping our unmarried daughter against her will.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
The angry Kurus said: This ill-behaved boy has offended us, forcibly kidnapping our unmarried daughter against her will.
Jīva Gosvāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

Duryodhana and others, called Sāmba a child since he was disrespectful and proud. Or they insulted him by calling him a boy protected by his father since he has insulted them and also had taken her against her will.

Śrīdhara Svāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

Duryodhana and others, called Sāmba untrained (durvinītaḥ) because he was a child. Or even though he was a child he was untrained and proud. “Is it not proper for kṣatriya to abduct his bride?” This was done against her will (akāmām).

When a lion's cub plays in a forest the deer call it ill-bred; they do not yet realize the father is watching from the rocks. The Kurus see only an 'ill-behaved boy' and miss whose son stands before them.
