  • śapantaḥ — cursing
Present participle of √śap. The citizens curse Satrājit — the slanderer of the previous arc is now the cursed. Vaiṣṇava sociology: the body politic of devotees protects Bhagavān's yaśas even before He returns to defend it.
  • durgām — Durgā
Accusative of Durgā — the Lord's external energy in protective form. Gauḍīya theology positions Durgā as Bhagavān's servant — citizens worship her to obtain Kṛṣṇa, not Kṛṣṇa to obtain her. The grammar holds the hierarchy.
  • kṛṣṇa-upalabdhaye — in order to obtain Kṛṣṇa
Compound: kṛṣṇa + upalabdhi (obtaining, dative). The whole motive of Durgā-worship, in the Vaiṣṇava reading, is kṛṣṇa-upalabdhi. Any other use of Durgā is a category error.
Cursing Satrājit, the sorrowful residents of Dvārakā approached the Durgā deity named Candrabhāgā and prayed to her for Kṛṣṇa’s return.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
Cursing Satrājit, the sorrowful residents of Dvārakā approached the Durgā deity named Candrabhāgā and prayed to her for Kṛṣṇa's return.
Jīva Gosvāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

They approached Durgā because they were absorbed in their roles as ordinary people just as the Lord himself acted as an ordinary person. They approached her for the quick attainment (upalabdhaye) of Kṛṣṇa.

Śrīdhara Svāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

Devakī and others (te) or all them taking Kṛṣṇa as their very life (te), all people, approached Durgā for attaining Kṛṣṇa quickly, the form of bliss. Being a special śakti of the Lord, she could do this.

Concepts
Jiva

When Bhagavān seems lost, the devotee turns to His śakti — the citizens go to Candrabhāgā Durgā, who exists to point back to Hari. The Bhāgavata frame: even the demigoddess's purpose is to return Kṛṣṇa.
