Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 10.55.11
Blended reading (Sanskrit + English inline)
-
kārṣṇiḥ
—
the son of Kṛṣṇa
Used here as Pradyumna confronts Rati — even when correcting His apparent mother, the title 'son of Kṛṣṇa' is kept. Gauḍīyas read this as the poet's quiet sub-signal: He speaks not from confusion but from the dignity of His real fatherhood.
-
mātaḥ
—
O mother
Vocative of mātṛ. Pradyumna addresses her in the mood He has known her in for years. Bhagavān honors the surface relation even when proposing to overturn it — moral order is maintained from inside the līlā, not waived in the name of higher truth.
-
mātṛ-bhāvam
—
the mood of motherhood
Compound: mātṛ (mother) + bhāvam (mood, attitude). Bhāva is a Gauḍīya technical term — the relational stance through which one approaches Bhagavān. Pradyumna asks: 'which bhāva are you in?' The categorial precision is doctrinal.
-
atikramya
—
overstepping, transgressing
Gerund of ati-√kram (to step over). Not a moral condemnation but a category-flag: 'you are not where you said you were.' The chapter's hinge — the next verse reveals that she was never the category He took her for.
-
kāminī
—
a girlfriend, an amorous woman
Feminine of kāmin. Carefully chosen: He does not call her wife (patnī) yet, only kāminī — because, by His present understanding, that is what her behavior amounts to. The verse stages the gap between social-name and tattva-name.
Though endowed with qualities like omniscience (bhagavan), by the will of Krsna, the ocean of pastimes, his omniscience was covered over and thus he spoke in this way. The real meaning of his words however should be "There should be no other tendency than this conjugal mood you are displaying, because you surpass the level of vatsalya bhava and are actually my lover in conjugal rasa."
Though he was endowed with all powers like omniscience (bhagavān), he spoke in an opposite manner since he was the son of Kṛṣṇa (kāṛṣṇiḥ) and thus performed attractive human pastimes in a similar manner. Pradyumna thought of her as a mother. This is described in Hari-vaṁśa: dhātryāḥ sakāśāt sa ca tāṁ śṛṇvan rukmiṇi-nandanaḥ | māyāvatīm avijṣānān mene svām eva mātaram | Since Pradyumna heard about it from his nurse, out of ignorance he thought of Māyāvatī to be his mother. He thought in this way because of the nurse, not because of Māyāvatī. The nurse told he was Māyāvatī’s son. Because of that information, he would not have called her his mother without some practice as a child. Therefore he now became angry. This attitude is different (anyathā). You are acting in a different manner. Out of embarrassment he did not say directly what it was, but then in the second part of the verse he describes the situation. You are transgressing the feelings of a mother and acting like a lover. The real meaning is “Because of your feelings, you should not act in any other way (te matir anyathā), since you are my beloved (kāminī). Your feelings surpass those of motherly love (mātṛ-bhāvam atikramya vartase).”
Pradyumna, raised on her lap and milk, rebukes her gently: 'Mother, your mood has shifted.' He does not refuse the love — He names the change so the relation must declare itself. Bhagavān will not glide over a category-mistake; even when the truth will soon flip the categories, the present moment must be addressed honestly.
