  • viniṣkrāntam — rising up, emerging fully
Past participle of vi + nis + √kram (to step out completely). Not just rising — emerging-out-fully. The verb stresses totality: the Lord does not partially appear; when He emerges, the whole Lord emerges.
  • divya-srak-gandha-vāsasam — with divine garlands, fragrances, and garments
Quadruple compound. The lake-depth had no such ornaments to give Him; they are His own, brought up with Him. Gauḍīyas read this as Bhagavān's svarūpa-aiśvarya manifesting at the moment of līlā-resolution, not borrowed from the setting.
  • labdha-prāṇāḥ-iva-asavaḥ — like senses that have regained their vital force
Simile clause: labdha (regained) + prāṇa (life-airs) + iva (like) + asavaḥ (senses). The cowherds are not just relieved; their very indriyas were dead and have come back. Gauḍīyas: separation from Kṛṣṇa is literal sensory death; reunion is literal resurrection.
  • prītyā-abhirebhire — embraced Him with affection
Instrumental of prīti + perfect of abhi + √rabh (to embrace closely). Sakhya-rasa in one phrase — the cowherd boys do not bow; they grab. Gauḍīya doctrine: vraja-prema collapses the formality between Bhagavān and bhakta into bodily contact.
  • pramoda-nibhṛta-ātmānaḥ — their hearts filled and held by joy
Triple compound: pramoda (great joy) + nibhṛta (filled, brimming) + ātman (self). Joy is not a passing mood but the soul's brimming-full condition. The Gauḍīya goal-state: nitya-ānanda, the self steady-full of bliss in Kṛṣṇa's nearness.
[Resuming his description of Kṛṣṇa’s chastisement of Kāliya, Śukadeva Gosvāmī continued:] Kṛṣṇa rose up out of the lake wearing divine garlands, fragrances and garments, covered with many fine jewels, and decorated with gold. When the cowherds saw Him they all stood up immediately, just like an unconscious person’s senses coming back to life. Filled with great joy, they affectionately embraced Him.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
[Resuming his description of Kṛṣṇa's chastisement of Kāliya, Śukadeva Gosvāmī continued:] Kṛṣṇa rose up out of the lake wearing divine garlands, fragrances and garments, covered with many fine jewels, and decorated with gold. When the cowherds saw Him they all stood up immediately, just like an unconscious person's senses coming back to life. Filled with great joy, they affectionately embraced Him.
Commentary

This story being completed, there is a return to the main story. Krsna came out of the lake in a special way (vi niskranta). That means he was kicking his feet in the water and unseen to others, was placing his feet upon the heads of other serpents in the water who had been ordered to serve Krsna by Kaliya. If this were not so, his whole body would have again become wet and the description of his garland and cloth would not be appropriate. The boys were endowed like senses (asava) which and regained life in a dead body. Their minds were filled with bliss (pramoda nibhrtatmanah). Gopa here refers to Krsna’s cowherd boy friends, not the adults. Because of their unsteadiness, being boys, they would have embraced Krsna before others.

Jīva Gosvāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

Having finished the anecdote, Śukadeva returns to the story. He was decorated in bright gold (jambūnada), having been decorated with devotion by the snakes. They saw him rising from the lake in a magnificent way (vi-niṣkrāntam). Until that time they had been stunned with fear. When he came out he walked quickly over the water. The people all rose up together, from being unconscious and stunned, because they had gained their life. The order of meeting the people is described. First he met his friends, since they were situated right on the bank in front. They embraced him.

Śrīdhara Svāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

Having finished the anecdote, Śukadeva returns to the story. Kṛṣṇa means Śyāmasundara or he who was the life of the people of Vraja. He rose from the water in a special way (viniṣkrāntam). He is described with three phrases. He was decorated with attractive gold (jaṁbūnadam). Having him approach (upalabhya) they stood up. Previously they had fallen on the ground fainting. When his fragrance entered their nostrils they recovered their consciousness. They rose suddenly from the ground or woke up from fainting. Because they had fainted, they did not see his dancing with attractive music. Thus they do not speak about it later. “How could they all regain consciousness at the same time?” They got up like life airs rising. The cowherds, generally elder males, embraced Kṛṣṇa many times (abhirebhire) since Yaśodā; and others regained consciousness later.

Related verses

Kṛṣṇa rises from the dark lake garlanded, fragrant, gold-decked — as though the depth that held the serpent had been only a dressing-room. The cowherd boys, who had fainted at His descent, return to their senses like a body whose breath has come back. The whole verse is the picture of darśana itself: Bhagavān re-emerges, and the devotee's prāṇas come home with Him.

Mahāprabhu's Yamunā-darśana

In Caitanya-caritāmṛta Madhya-līlā, when Mahāprabhu first reached Vṛndāvana, He saw the Yamunā and fell unconscious — His body trembling, hair standing on end, tears flooding. Devotees had to physically lift Him.

Gauḍīyas read His vibhāva as the natural echo of these verses: the cowherds' senses returning at Kṛṣṇa's emergence is the inverse of Mahāprabhu's senses departing at Kṛṣṇa's invisible nearness. Both are bhāva at maximum pressure.
