  • tat - vidām — those who can understand Kṛṣṇa's activities
Tat-vit — the knower of 'that' (i.e., of Kṛṣṇa's true position). Gauḍīya specification: only one with tattva-jñāna can taste these līlās correctly — a sahajiyā or sentimentalist sees only surface play. The verse marks bhakti-tattva, not generic admiration, as the precondition.
  • bhṛtya - vaśyatām — agreeableness to His devotees
The technical Gauḍīya term — bhakta-vaśyatā — appears here in its near-synonym form. Bhṛtya = servant; vaśya = under control. The Lord's submission to His own servants is, per the Six Gosvāmīs, His most amazing aiśvarya — greater than His omnipotence is His willingness to be defeated by love.
  • vrajasya — of Vrajabhūmi
Genitive — 'of Vraja.' Vraja is the highest dhāma in Gauḍīya cosmology, identical with Goloka, descended into this world. Kṛṣṇa increases the pleasure 'of Vraja' as a whole — gopas, gopīs, cows, calves, trees, river — because Vraja is the unified body of His sva-jana.
  • bāla - ceṣṭitaiḥ — by childhood activities
Ceṣṭita — deliberate behaviors, conscious acts. The Gauḍīya reading: Kṛṣṇa's childhood is not biological development but cintita-līlā — chosen pastimes, every gesture orchestrated by yoga-māyā to nourish a specific rasa. There is no 'accident' in His ceṣṭita.
To pure devotees throughout the world who could understand His activities, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Kṛṣṇa, exhibited how much He can be subdued by His devotees, His servants. In this way He increased the pleasure of the Vrajavāsīs by His childhood activities.

That Kṛṣṇa performed childhood activities to increase the pleasure of His devotees was another transcendental humor. He exhibited these activities not only to the inhabitants of Vrajabhūmi, but also to others, who were captivated by His external potency and opulence. Both the internal devotees, who were simply absorbed in love of Kṛṣṇa, and the external devotees, who were captivated by His unlimited potency, were informed of Kṛṣṇa’s desire to be submissive to His servants.

Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
To pure devotees throughout the world who could understand His activities, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Kṛṣṇa, exhibited how much He can be subdued by His devotees, His servants. In this way He increased the pleasure of the Vrajavāsīs by His childhood activities.
Commentary

Not just his relatives but all the inhabitants of Vraja derives bliss form Krsna’s childhood pastimes, because of his coming under their control. This aspect of himself he showed directly to those familiar with his aisvarya aspect-Brahma and Siva, because it cannot be presented by explanations alone.

Jīva Gosvāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

The purpose is indicated. He made those who knew about his powers but did not know about the devotees’ control over him how he is controlled by his devotees. The word bhṛtya (servant) is used to reiterate the mood of those who know the powers of the Lord. The word svānām is used to indicate those whom the Lord takes as his own family. He produced bliss for all the people of Vraja by other childhood pastimes. The word vai indicates that this was accomplished.

Śrīdhara Svāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

Another goal is mentioned. He showed directly to those who know the Lord (tad-vidām) that he was controlled by his devotees and no one else. This should be seen as the special cause of his producing prīti in others. His actions showed the greatness of bhakti. By other similar pastimes he produced bliss in all the people of Vraja always. Vai means it is well known. The pastimes should be told everywhere. And there are many other pastimes from his childhood. The conclusion concerning these all pastimes was discussed previously.

Kṛṣṇa, the Supreme, willingly lets Himself be subdued by His devotees — His childhood līlā reveals that bhakti binds even the unbindable.
Practical Applications
  • Notice one moment today when you can lower yourself before a devotee — serve, listen, or defer — and taste the same sweetness Kṛṣṇa relishes in being subdued.
  • Refuse the impersonalist drift: when you sit for japa or read this verse, address Kṛṣṇa as a Person who delights in His devotees, not as an abstract Absolute.
  • Speak to Kṛṣṇa today as a child speaks to one He trusts utterly — drop the ahaṅkāra of being the controller and let Him carry the outcome.

A great philanthropist visits the home of a child he secretly funds and, instead of declaring himself, lets the child boss him around at tea — every condescension is a teaching for those quietly watching from the doorway. Kṛṣṇa's letting Himself be subdued by Vraja is, for tat-vidām (the knowers), a public lecture on bhakta-vaśya delivered in private form.

Bhīṣma falling before Yudhiṣṭhira's questions

In the Mahābhārata's Śānti-parva, Bhīṣma — the grandsire whom even Drona feared — submits hour after hour to Yudhiṣṭhira's questions, speaking from the arrow-bed as patiently as a servant before his master. Kṛṣṇa stands by, smiling, because it is His own bhakta-vaśyatā being displayed through Bhīṣma's words and posture.

The Gauḍīya commentators read both scenes — Vraja Kṛṣṇa being directed by gopīs, and Bhīṣma being directed by Yudhiṣṭhira — as a single teaching: greatness in the Vaiṣṇava tradition expresses itself through subordination to those who love.
