C - Chitraketu (14-19)
How could a demon like Vritrasura have such glorious devotional qualities? In answer, Sukadeva Goswami explained his previous birth as Chitraketu, during which he had great devotion for Lord Sankarsana. Chitraketu became enlightened through a rollercoaster of events – first he was childless (despite having 10 million wives), then his newborn child abruptly died and then the son reappeared and taught him the harsh realities of life. Later, when Chitraketu offended Parvati, she cursed him to become a demon in his next life. Chitraketu humbly accepted his destiny, seeing all occurrences as the Lord’s mercy.

Chitraketu Cursed
Chapter 17
Along with seeing the Lord, Chitraketu was also benedicted with rulership over the Vidyadhara planet. As he enjoyed in that realm, travelling from place-toplace, he once encountered Lord Siva publicly embracing Parvati, surrounded by an august assembly of Siddhas, Caranas and great sages.
Chitraketu was astonished by the sight and laughed loudly, much to the disapproval of Parvati. There was no offensive intention since Chitraketu was simply exhibiting his amazement at Lord Siva’s aloofness. Nevertheless, Parvati, entirely unimpressed by his reaction, cursed him to become a demon. Chitraketu humbly accepted it without protest. Devotees, Siva said, never fear any condition of life – heaven, hell or liberation are all the same since their only aspiration is to serve the Lord.
Chitraketu thus became the ‘demon’ Vritrasura in his next life.

Chapter 15, 16
The two sages instructed Chitraketu in the harsh realities of life; all relationships of this world are temporary, and the material designations we assume are ultimately imaginary. The illuminating knowledge empowered Chitraketu to gain a broader perspective. Being eager for more, Narada guided Chitraketu in cultivating an internal detachment and gave him a mantra to chant. Then, by his mystic potency, Narada empowered the child to speak words of wisdom which further highlighted the transitory nature of everything in this world.
The funeral ceremony was performed and the envious queens were so ashamed of their conduct that they gave up the aspiration to have children. The sages departed and Chitraketu dedicated himself to reciting the mantra given to him by Narada. Within days he was able to have the direct vision of Lord Sesa, and he overflowed with gratitude. Pleased by his prayers, the Supreme Lord explained further knowledge of Himself to Chitraketu.

Chitraketu’s Lamentation
Chapter 14
When Maharaja Pariksit enquired how a demon could possess such exalted consciousness, Sukadeva Goswami described Vritrasura’s previous birth as Chitraketu.
Despite marrying ten million wives, Chitraketu had no children. When the great sage Angira Rishi visited, Chitraketu warmly received him. He frankly expressed his dissatisfaction to the sage, who mercifully arranged for his first wife, Krtadyuti, to have a son. There was, however, a caveat – he predicted the child would bring both happiness ( harsa ) and lamentation ( soka ).
Upon the birth of this son, Chitraketu and all the citizens were overjoyed. His dream had finally been fulfilled! The other wives, however, didn’t share that joy, feeling neglected and sidelined by their husband. Clouded by envy and overcome by selfishness, they administered poison to the child and mercilessly killed him. Krtadyuti fainted in shock, the inhabitants of the palace were in tears and Chitraketu practically lost all consciousness! The mother condemned the cruel acts of providence and begged her child to wake up, but it was futile. Understanding their pain, the sages Narada and Angira arrived on the scene to offer enlightening words.

Diti, Indra and the Maruts
Chapter 18, 19
Sukadeva Goswami continued describing the descendants of Daksa’s daughters, particularly Diti (mother of the demons) and Aditi (mother of the demigods). Those offspring became known as the Daityas and Adityas respectively.
Diti had a grudge against Indra since Vishnu had appeared to save him by killing her sons, Hiranyaksa and Hiranyakasipu. Angered, she now desired another son who would kill Indra. Through her womanly charm she conquered Kasyapa, her husband, who agreed to unite with her. When she expressed what kind of child she wanted, however, he was shocked and condemned himself. Nevertheless, Kasyapa ingeniously instructed Diti to strictly follow the Vaisnava austerity of Pumsavana-vrata. This would satisfy her desire for a son, but simultaneously purify her consciousness from the enmity towards Indra and the demigods.
While Diti engaged in the vow ( vrata ), Indra closely monitored her every move, looking for some discrepancy to capitalise upon. When Indra caught her in violation of the strict regulations, he entered her womb and sliced the embryo into forty-nine parts. Those children became known as the Maruts, who later made friends with Indra and were saved. Upon the request of Maharaja Pariksit, Sukadeva Goswami went on to explain the details of the Pumsavana-vrata.

River of Names
“The instructions given by Narada and Angira Muni are the true spiritual instructions for the illusioned conditioned soul. This world is temporary, but because of our previous karma we come here and accept bodies, creating temporary relationships in terms of society, friendship, love, nationality and community, which are all finished at death. These temporary relationships did not exist in the past, nor will they exist in the future. Therefore, at the present moment the so-called relationships are illusions.” (SB 6.15.2)
When Maharaja Chitraketu was overwhelmed by lamentation at the sudden death of his beloved son, he received a series of transcendental instructions. Firstly, the great sages Narada and Angira came and reminded Chitraketu about the body, soul, inevitable death and the subsequent transmigration that everyone will experience. Later, Chitraketu’s son came back to life and spoke to the King, quite bluntly stating: “In which birth were these individuals my mother and father? No one is actually my mother and father. How can I accept these two people as my parents?” Later, after absorbing himself in prayer, Chitraketu was further enlightened in transcendental knowledge by the Supreme Lord Himself. At every stage he received powerful insights to elevate his consciousness and bring perspective to the situation he was facing.
The Srimad-Bhagavatam offers a series of interesting analogies to describe the transitory nature of relationships in this material world:
Tourists meeting in a hotel:
“Thereafter, Devayani, the daughter of Sukracarya, understood that the materialistic association of husband, friends and relatives is like the association in a hotel full of tourists. The relationships of society, friendship and love are created by the maya of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, exactly as in a dream.” (SB 9.19.27-28)
Travellers in a restaurant:
“My dear mother, in a restaurant or place for drinking cold water, many travellers are brought together, and after drinking water they continue to their respective destinations. Similarly, living entities join together in a family, and later, as a result of their own actions, they are led apart to their destinations.” (SB 7.2.21)
Sticks meeting in the river:
“Many planks and sticks, unable to stay together, are carried away by the force of a river’s waves. Similarly, although we are intimately related with friends and family members, we are unable to stay together because of our varied past deeds and the waves of time.” (SB 10.5.25)
Fallible Soldiers in an army:
“Persons devoid of atma-tattva do not enquire into the problems of life, being too attached to the fallible soldiers like the body, children and wife. Although sufficiently experienced, they still do not see their inevitable destruction.” (SB 2.1.4)
Dreams that will end:
“In a dream we form a society of friendship and love, and when we awaken we see that it has ceased to exist. Similarly, one’s gross society, family and love are also a dream, and this dream will be over as soon as one dies. Therefore, whether one is dreaming in a subtle way or a gross way, these dreams are all false and temporary.” (SB 7.14.3-4)
Elements scattered by the wind:
“Just as the wind brings together masses of clouds, blades of grass, wisps of cotton and particles of dust, only to scatter them all again, so the creator deals with His created beings in the same way.” (SB 10.82.43)
In a conversation with Dhritarastra, Akrura concludes:
“In this world no one has any permanent relationship with anyone else, O King. We cannot stay forever even with our own body, what to speak of our wife, children and the rest. Every creature is born alone and dies alone, and alone one experiences the just rewards of his good and evil deeds.” (SB 10.49.20-21)
So how do we mediate the relationships of this world? Are all of our connections ultimately meaningless and simply a waste of time?

Attention vs Attachment

Attention vs Attachment
Without genuinely investing in relationships, situations and aspirations, how can we make any real progress in those areas? Where the attention goes, energy flows and results invariably show. Simultaneously, however, wisdom teachers constantly remind us to remain detached and aloof; everything in this world is a fleeting reality destined for destruction at the ruthless hands of time. In ultimate reality, we are building castles in the sand. So what’s the balance? When does genuine concern and responsibility evolve into an unhealthy attachment? How can we identify the extremes of over-zealous endeavour and irresponsible aloofness? Is it possible to cultivate a spiritually elevated consciousness whilst sensitively navigating day-to-day realities and responsibilities?
The Srimad-Bhagavatam makes a clear distinction between being attentive and being attached. Every spiritual practitioner should know how to strike the balance and avoid overstepping the line.
Intelligence vs Emotion (The Driver) – an attentive person is driven to act by spiritual intelligence, clearly understanding the broader need and purpose behind their endeavour. An attached person, however, is driven by fleeting emotions and is therefore flickering in effort and determination. It’s not that an attentive person is not passionate or emotionally involved, but every endeavour is founded upon wisdom and knowledge. Are you driven by intelligence or emotion?
Endeavour vs Result (The Success) – an attentive person invests energy in crafting a perfect endeavour, doing everything within their control to make the best attempt possible. This is their measure of success. An attached person, however, evaluates success based on the outcome and result. An attentive person is not indifferent to the results, but simply uses them to understand how they can refine and improve their endeavour. Are you concerned about giving your best or achieving the best?
Eternal vs Temporary (The Vision) – an attentive person is always awake to the backdrop of spiritual reality, though living and functioning in the ‘real’ world. An attached person, however, engrossed and entangled in their vision of this temporary life, is rendered oblivious to the ‘bigger picture.’ Attentive people are undoubtedly practical, but simultaneously transcendental. How many of your desires, decisions and directions are formulated with reference to the ultimate purpose of life?

Transcendental Affection

Transcendental Affection
In the First Canto of Srimad-Bhagavatam we find the striking prayers of Queen Kunti. With regards to family attachments, she prays: “O Lord of the universe, soul of the universe, O personality of the form of the universe, please, therefore, sever my tie of affection for my kinsmen, the Pandavas and the Vrsnis. O Lord of Madhu, as the Ganges forever flows to the sea without hindrance, let my attraction be constantly drawn unto You without being diverted to anyone else.” ( SB 1.8.41 - 42 )
In the purport, Srila Prabhupada clarifies how affection cannot be annihilated, but must be redirected in a spiritual way: “Perfection of pure devotional service is attained when all attention is diverted towards the transcendental loving service of the Lord. To cut off the tie of all other affections does not mean complete negation of the finer elements, like affection for someone else. This is not possible. A living being, whoever he may be, must have this feeling of affection for others because this is a symptom of life… The so-called affection for family, society, country, etc., consists of different phases of sense gratification. When this desire is changed for the satisfaction of the Lord, it is called devotional service.” (SB 1.8.42)
But we may still wonder why Queen Kunti’s affection for her family members, who were all Krishna’s devotees, is problematic. Srila Prabhupada further clarifies: “Her affection for the Pandavas and the Vrsnis is not out of the range of devotional service because the service of the Lord and the service of the devotees are identical. Sometimes service to the devotee is more valuable than service to the Lord. But here the affection of Kuntidevi for the Pandavas and the Vrsnis was due to family relation. This tie of affection in terms of material relation is the relation of maya because the relations of the body or the mind are due to the influence of the external energy. Relations of the soul, established in relation with the Supreme Soul, are factual relations. When Kuntidevi wanted to cut off the family relation, she meant to cut off the relation of the skin. The skin relation is the cause of material bondage, but the relation of the soul is the cause of freedom.” (SB 1.8.42)

The Eighteenth Chapter describes how Diti, whose sons had been killed by Viṣṇu, performed austerities for a son to kill Indra, and how, after Indra cut the child in Diti’s womb to pieces, the embryo became the Maruts. In relating the descendents of Aditi’s sons, the fourth son was mentioned as Tvaṣṭā. In relation to him, the story of Viśvarūpa’s murder and the curse of Citraketu were described. Now the description of Aditi’s descendents from the fifth and other sons is given. Paśum means animal sacrifice. Mahāmakhān means five sacrifices. The verb is in the following verse.
Pṛśni, wife of Savitā (Aditi's fifth son), bore three daughters and the sons named Agnihotra, Paśu, Soma, Cāturmāsya, and the five Mahāyajñas. Even ritual categories descend through specific mothers.

Purport
As the Lord says in Bhagavad-gītā (4.6) :
ajo ’pi sann avyayātmā bhūtānām īśvaro ’pi san prakṛtiṁ svām adhiṣṭhāya sambhavāmy ātma-māyayā
“Although I am unborn and My transcendental body never deteriorates, and although I am the Lord of all sentient beings, I still appear in every millennium in My original transcendental form.” When the Supreme Personality of Godhead incarnates, He does not need any help from the external energy, for He appears as He is by His own potency. The spiritual potency is also called māyā. It is said, ato māyāmayaṁ viṣṇuṁ pravadanti manīṣiṇaḥ: the body accepted by the Supreme Personality of Godhead is called māyāmaya. This does not mean that He is formed of the external energy; this māyā refers to His internal potency.

Translation
Urukrama, or Vāmana, the twelfth son of Aditi, who appeared through the Lord’s spiritual potency, begot one son, named Bṛhatśloka, in the womb of his wife Kīrti. Bṛhatśloka had many sons, headed by Saubhaga.
Māyā here refers to the eternal svarūpa-śakti of the Lord, which is also called māyā. Madhva gives the following scriptural evidence for this meaning. Ato māyāmayaṁ viṣṇuṁ pravadanti manīṣiṇaḥ: the wise called Viṣṇu the person made of māyā.

Personal Guidance
The Lord appeared in dwarf form as Urukrama, twelfth son of Aditi; in Kīrti's womb He begot Bṛhatśloka. The Lord descends, marries, has a son — full personhood, not abstraction.
Reflection Questions
Where do I prefer abstract God to personal God?
What can the dwarf form teach my image of greatness?

I will now describe the demon sons of Diti, who were begotten by Kaśyapa. In this demoniac family the great devotee Prahlāda Mahārāja and Bali Mahārāja also appeared.
Here a new subject begins. Dāyadān means sons. Daiteyān means the sons of Diti.
Now let me describe Diti's sons, begotten by Kaśyapa, who became demons — yet Prahlāda and Bali appeared in this family. Even the demoniac line produces great devotees.

Purport
Mahārāja Parīkṣit’s question was very much appreciated by Śukadeva Gosvāmī because although it was composed of a small number of words, it contained meaningful inquiries about how the sons of Diti, although born as demons, became demigods. Śrīla Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura stresses that even though Diti was very envious, her heart was purified because of a devotional attitude. Another significant topic is that although Kaśyapa Muni was a learned scholar and was advanced in spiritual consciousness, he nonetheless fell a victim to the inducement of his beautiful wife. All these questions were posed in a small number of words, and therefore Śukadeva Gosvāmī very much appreciated Mahārāja Parīkṣit’s inquiry.

Sūta Gosvāmī said: O sage Śaunaka! After hearing Mahārāja Parīkṣit speak respectful, precise words holding many meanings, omniscient Śukadeva Gosvāmī praised him and, with perfectly concentrated mind, replied.
Arthavat means “with many meanings.” One meaning is obtained from the story.
Performing tamasic bhakti to the Lord with the goal of harming others, one becomes purified in heart, and along with developing bhakti without tamas, one gains liberation from saṁsāra and gives up the tendency for violence to others. Diti is the proof of this. That is the first meaning of the story. Those with crooked hearts, who see faults in others, though they are intelligent, do not see those same faults in themselves. Diti is also an example of this, with her words starting in verse 24. This is the second meaning. A learned person can be cheated by the attraction of a woman. Kaśyapa is an example of this. That is the third meaning. Alpam means “with measured syllables.” Sannibhṛtena means “completely concentrated mind.” Satrāyaṇa is Śaunaka.

Śukadeva Gosvāmī said: Diti, whose two sons Hiraṇyākṣa and Hiraṇyakaśipu had been killed by Viṣṇu with Indra’s help, burning with anger intensified by lamentation, contemplated as follows.
Śakra-pārṣṇi-grahena means “with Indra helping from the back, or supporting indirectly.”
Just to help Indra, Lord Viṣṇu killed Hiraṇyākṣa and Hiraṇyakaśipu; their mother Diti, overwhelmed with grief and anger, contemplated revenge. Bereaved mothers can become formidable agents.

Lord Indra, who is very much fond of sense gratification, has killed the two brothers Hiraṇyākṣa and Hiraṇyakaśipu by means of Lord Viṣṇu. Therefore Indra is cruel, hardhearted and sinful. When will I, having killed him, rest with a pacified mind?

When dead, the bodies of all the rulers known as kings and great leaders will be transformed into worms, stool or ashes. If one enviously kills others for the protection of such a body, does he actually know the true interest of life? Certainly he does not, for if one is envious of other entities, he surely goes to hell.
Purport

Translation
For maintaining his body which has been defined as worms, stool and ashes, the king, in committing violence, does not know his own benefit, since he will go to hell as a result.
After death the body of he who is called a king, if remaining for two or three days becomes worms. If eaten by dogs, it becomes stool. If it is burned by sons, it becomes ashes. That has been the definition of the body of a king, since this has been seen from examples of previous kings. Past tense is used.
Does one who commits violence to other beings, for maintaining his body, know his own benefit? He does not, because he goes to hell. This implies that Indra is without intelligence. She also is without intelligence because she wants to kill Indra. One can see that both she and Indra commit violence, both are hard-hearted, and both do not know their own benefit. In this way a person with real intelligence can determine the lack of discernment of unintelligent people.
Personal Guidance
When dead, kings' bodies become worms, stool or ashes — does one who kills others for such a body know his real interest? The body for which we kill is itself perishable.

Thinking in this way [with a desire for a son to kill Indra], Diti began constantly acting to satisfy Kaśyapa by her pleasing behavior. O King, Diti always carried out Kaśyapa’s orders very faithfully, as he desired. In the beginning of creation, Lord Brahmā, the father of the living entities of the universe, saw that all the living entities were unattached. To increase population, he then created woman from the better half of man’s body, for woman’s behavior carries away a man’s mind.
Purport
This entire universe is going on under the spell of sexual attachment, which was created by Lord Brahmā to increase the population of the entire universe, not only in human society but also in other species. As stated by Ṛṣabhadeva in the Fifth Canto, puṁsaḥ striyā mithunī-bhāvam etam: the entire world is going on under the spell of sexual attraction and desire between man and woman. When man and woman unite, the hard knot of this attraction becomes increasingly tight, and thus a man is implicated in the materialistic way of life. This is the illusion of the material world. This illusion acted upon Kaśyapa Muni, although he was very learned and advanced in spiritual knowledge. As stated in the Manu-saṁhitā (2.215) and Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam (9.19.17) :
“A man should not associate with a woman in a solitary place, not even with his mother, sister or daughter, for the senses are so strong that they lead astray even a person advanced in knowledge.” When a man remains in a solitary place with a woman, his sexual desires undoubtedly increase. Therefore the words ekānta-bhūtāni, which are used here, indicate that to avoid sexual desires one should avoid the company of women as far as possible. Sexual desire is so powerful that one is saturated with it if he stays in a solitary place with any woman, even his mother, sister or daughter.

In the beginning of creation, Lord Brahmā, seeing that all the living entities were single, created woman from the better half of man's body, by whom the men’s minds are captivated.
Ekānta-bhūtāni means the men were without association. By woman, men’s minds became captivated. They entered the continuous river of saṁsāra.
Brahmā saw all beings unattached and created woman from the better half of man's body to increase population; women's beauty is irresistible. The narrator's cosmological note frames the seduction.

A husband is the supreme demigod for a woman. The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Vāsudeva, the husband of the goddess of fortune, is situated in everyone’s heart and is worshiped through the various names and forms of the demigods by fruitive workers. Similarly, a husband represents the Lord as the object of worship for a woman.

The Lord says in Bhagavad-gītā (9.23) :
ye ’py anya-devatā-bhaktā yajante śraddhayānvitāḥ te ’pi mām eva kaunteya yajanty avidhi-pūrvakam
“Whatever a man may sacrifice to other gods, O son of Kuntī, is really meant for Me alone, but it is offered without true understanding.” The demigods are various assistants who act like the hands and legs of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. One who is not in direct touch with the Supreme Lord and cannot conceive of the exalted position of the Lord is sometimes advised to worship the demigods as various parts of the Lord. If women, who are usually very much attached to their husbands, worship their husbands as representatives of Vāsudeva, the women benefit, just as Ajāmila benefited by calling for Nārāyaṇa, his son. Ajāmila was concerned with his son, but because of his attachment to the name of Nārāyaṇa, he attained salvation simply by chanting that name. In India a husband is still called pati-guru, the husband spiritual master. If husband and wife are attached to one another for advancement in Kṛṣṇa consciousness, their relationship of cooperation is very effective for such advancement. Although the names of Indra and Agni are sometimes uttered in the Vedic mantras ( indrāya svāhā, agnaye svāhā ), the Vedic sacrifices are actually performed for the satisfaction of Lord Viṣṇu. As long as one is very much attached to material sense gratification, the worship of the demigods or the worship of one’s husband is recommended.

A husband is the supreme object of worship for a woman. Vāsudeva, the husband of the goddess of fortune and presiding deity of citta within all beings, is worshiped through the various names and forms representing devatās by fruitive workers. Similarly, a husband, the representative of the Lord, is worshipped by a woman.
The husband is a jīva. How can he be the Lord (daivatam)? The Supreme Lord Vāsudeva, who is the presiding deity of the citta (manasaḥ), is worshipped by karma-yogīs by indications of the devatās, such as names like Indra and forms like his form holding a thunderbolt, variously combined. Thus the Lord is addressed by various names and forms with words like “indrāya svāhā” and “agnaye svāhā.” Similarly the Lord in the form of a husband is worshipped by his wife.
Personal Guidance
A husband is the supreme demigod for a woman; Vāsudeva is worshiped through various demigods, and a chaste wife worships her husband as His representative. A dense theology of domestic worship is offered.

Purport
The word indra-haṇam means “one who can kill Indra,” but it also means “one who follows Indra.” The word amṛtyum refers to the demigods, who do not die like ordinary human beings because they have extremely long durations of life. For example, the duration of Lord Brahmā’s life is stated in Bhagavad-gītā: sahasra-yuga-paryantam ahar yad brahmaṇo viduḥ. Even the duration of one day, or twelve hours, of Brahmā is 4,300,000 years multiplied by one thousand. Thus the duration of his life is inconceivable for an ordinary human being. The demigods are therefore sometimes called amara, which means “one who has no death.” In this material world, however, everyone has to die. Therefore the word amṛtyum indicates that Diti wanted a son who would be equal in status to the demigods.

Diti said: O great soul! If you are a giver of benedictions, I ask for an immortal son who can kill Indra, who killed my two sons.
Indra-haṇam means “killer of Indra.” But it can also mean a follower of Indra since han can mean “to go.” Amṛtum means “not to be killed by anyone.” It also means that he will be a devatā, immortal. One devatā Māruta would be divided into forty-nine parts. Thus the word putram is in the singular.
Diti replies: I have lost my sons; please give me an immortal son to kill Indra, who killed Hiraṇyākṣa and Hiraṇyakaśipu with Viṣṇu's help. The boon is precisely targeted at vengeance.

This woman, my wife, has adopted a means that follows her nature, and therefore she is not to be blamed. But I am a man. Therefore, all condemnation upon me! I am not at all conversant with what is good for me, since I could not control my senses.
Purport
The natural instinct of a woman is to enjoy the material world. She induces her husband to enjoy this world by satisfying his tongue, belly and genitals, which are called jihvā, udara and upastha. A woman is expert in cooking palatable dishes so that she can easily satisfy her husband in eating. When one eats nicely, his belly is satisfied, and as soon as the belly is satisfied the genitals become strong. Especially when a man is accustomed to eating meat and drinking wine and similar passionate things, he certainly becomes sexually inclined. It should be understood that sexual inclinations are meant not for spiritual progress but for gliding down to hell. Thus Kaśyapa Muni considered his situation and lamented. In other words, to be a householder is very risky unless one is trained and the wife is a follower of her husband. A husband should be trained at the very beginning of his life. Kaumāra ācaret prājño dharmān bhāgavatān iha ( Bhāg. 7.6.1 ). During the time of brahmacarya, or student life, a brahmacārī should be taught to be expert in bhāgavata-dharma, devotional service. Then when he marries, if his wife is faithful to her husband and follows him in such life, the relationship between husband and wife is very desirable. However, a relationship between husband and wife without spiritual consciousness but strictly for sense gratification is not at all good. It is said in Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam (12.2.3) that especially in this age, Kali-yuga, dām-patye ’bhirucir hetuḥ: the relationship between husband and wife will be based on sexual power. Therefore householder life in this Kali-yuga is extremely dangerous unless both the wife and husband take to Kṛṣṇa consciousness.

A woman’s face is as attractive and beautiful as a blossoming lotus flower during autumn. Her words are very sweet, and they give pleasure to the ear, but if we study a woman’s heart, we can understand it to be extremely sharp, like the blade of a razor. In these circumstances, who could understand the dealings of a woman?
Purport
Woman is now depicted very well from the materialistic point of view by Kaśyapa Muni. Women are generally known as the fair sex, and especially in youth, at the age of sixteen or seventeen, women are very attractive to men. Therefore a woman’s face is compared to a blooming lotus flower in autumn. Just as a lotus is extremely beautiful in autumn, a woman at the threshold of youthful beauty is extremely attractive. In Sanskrit a woman’s voice is called nārī-svara because women generally sing and their singing is very attractive. At the present moment, cinema artists, especially female singers, are especially welcome. Some of them earn fabulous amounts of money simply by singing. Therefore, as taught by Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, a woman’s singing is dangerous because it can make a sannyāsī fall a victim to the woman. Sannyāsa means giving up the company of women, but if a sannyāsī hears the voice of a woman and sees her beautiful face, he certainly becomes attracted and is sure to fall down. There have been many examples. Even the great sage Viśvāmitra fell a victim to Menakā. Therefore a person desiring to advance in spiritual consciousness must be especially careful not to see a woman’s face or hear a woman’s voice. To see a woman’s face and appreciate its beauty or to hear a woman’s voice and appreciate her singing as very nice is a subtle falldown for a brahmacārī or sannyāsī. Thus the description of a woman’s features by Kaśyapa Muni is very instructive.
When a woman’s bodily features are attractive, when her face is beautiful and when her voice is sweet, she is naturally a trap for a man. The śāstras advise that when such a woman comes to serve a man, she should be considered to be like a dark well covered by grass. In the fields there are many such wells, and a man who does not know about them drops through the grass and falls down. Thus there are many such instructions. Since the attraction of the material world is based on attraction for women, Kaśyapa Muni thought, “Under the circumstances, who can understand the heart of a woman?” Cāṇakya Paṇḍita has also advised, viśvāso naiva kartavyaḥ strīṣu rāja-kuleṣu ca: “There are two persons one should not trust — a politician and a woman.” These, of course, are authoritative śāstric injunctions, and we should therefore be very careful in our dealings with women.
Sometimes our Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement is criticized for mingling men and women, but Kṛṣṇa consciousness is meant for anyone. Whether one is a man or woman does not matter. Lord Kṛṣṇa personally says, striyo vaiśyās tathā śūdrās te ’pi yānti parāṁ gatim: whether one is a woman, śūdra or vaiśya, not to speak of being a brāhmaṇa or kṣatriya, everyone is fit to return home, back to Godhead, if he strictly follows the instructions of the spiritual master and śāstra. We therefore request all the members of the Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement — both men and women — not to be attracted by bodily features but only to be attracted by Kṛṣṇa. Then everything will be all right. Otherwise there will be danger.

To satisfy their own interests, women deal with men as if the men were most dear to them, but no one is actually dear to them. Women are supposed to be very saintly, but for their own interests they can kill even their husbands, sons or brothers, or cause them to be killed by others.
Purport
A woman’s nature has been particularly well studied by Kaśyapa Muni. Women are self-interested by nature, and therefore they should be protected by all means so that their natural inclination to be too self-interested will not be manifested. Women need to be protected by men. A woman should be cared for by her father in her childhood, by her husband in her youth and by her grown sons in her old age. This is the injunction of Manu, who says that a woman should not be given independence at any stage. Women must be cared for so that they will not be free to manifest their natural tendency for gross selfishness. There have been many cases, even in the present day, in which women have killed their husbands to take advantage of their insurance policies. This is not a criticism of women but a practical study of their nature. Such natural instincts of a woman or a man are manifested only in the bodily conception of life. When either a man or a woman is advanced in spiritual consciousness, the bodily conception of life practically vanishes. We should see all women as spiritual units ( ahaṁ brahmāsmi ), whose only duty is to satisfy Kṛṣṇa. Then the influences of the different modes of material nature, which result from one’s possessing a material body, will not act.
The Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement is so beneficial that it can very easily counteract the contamination of material nature, which results from one’s possessing a material body. Bhagavad-gītā therefore teaches, in the very beginning, that whether one is a man or a woman, one must know that he or she is not the body but a spiritual soul. Everyone should be interested in the activities of the spirit soul, not the body. As long as one is activated by the bodily conception of life, there is always the danger of being misled, whether one is a man or a woman. The soul is sometimes described as puruṣa because whether one is dressed as a man or a woman, one is inclined to enjoy this material world. One who has this spirit of enjoyment is described as puruṣa. Whether one is a man or a woman, he is not interested in serving others; everyone is interested in satisfying his or her own senses. Kṛṣṇa consciousness, however, provides first-class training for a man or a woman. A man should be trained to be a first-class devotee of Lord Kṛṣṇa, and a woman should be trained to be a very chaste follower of her husband. That will make the lives of both of them happy.

Kaśyapa Muni concluded, “Diti is eager to have a son who can kill Indra, since she is a woman, after all, and is not very intelligent. I shall train her in such a way that instead of always thinking of how to kill Indra, she will become a Vaiṣṇava, a devotee of Kṛṣṇa. If she agrees to follow the rules and regulations of the Vaiṣṇava principles, the unclean core of her heart will certainly be cleansed.” Ceto-darpaṇa-mārjanam. This is the process of devotional service. Anyone can be purified by following the principles of devotional service in Kṛṣṇa consciousness, for Kṛṣṇa consciousness is so powerful that it can purify even the dirtiest class of men and transform them into the topmost Vaiṣṇavas. Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu’s movement aims at this purpose. Narottama dāsa Ṭhākura says:
The appearance of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu in this Kali-yuga is especially meant to deliver the fallen souls, who are always planning something for material enjoyment. He gave the people of this age the advantage of being able to chant the Hare Kṛṣṇa mantra and thus become fully pure, free from all material contamination. Once one becomes a pure Vaiṣṇava, he transcends all material conceptions of life. Thus Kaśyapa Muni tried to transform his wife into a Vaiṣṇavī so that she might give up the idea of killing Indra. He wanted both her and her sons to be purified so that they would be fit to become pure Vaiṣṇavas. Of course, sometimes a practitioner deviates from the Vaiṣṇava principles, and there is a chance that he may fall down, but Kaśyapa Muni thought that even if one falls while practicing the Vaiṣṇava principles, he is still not a loser. Even a fallen Vaiṣṇava is eligible for better results, as confirmed in Bhagavad-gītā. Svalpam apy asya dharmasya trāyate mahato bhayāt: even practicing the Vaiṣṇava principles to a small extent can save one from the greatest danger of material existence. Thus Kaśyapa Muni planned to instruct his wife Diti to become a Vaiṣṇava because he wanted to save the life of Indra.

I made a promise to her, and this promise cannot be violated, but also, Indra should not to be killed. In these circumstances, the solution I have is suitable.
Tatredam upakalpate means “this is suitable.” The meaning is this. I will teach her a Vaiṣṇava austerity. When her heart becomes purified by that austerity, she will no longer have anger at Indra. Thus she will not want to kill him. She will not kill Indra because the Vaiṣṇava vow she undertakes will not bestow evil results even if desired. However, then the words of request in her prayer will be nullified. Since han can mean “go” as well as “kill,” she will have a son who will follow Indra instead of killing him, who will be a devatā, not a demon. Because of the length of the vow, there will certainly be some irregularity in her performance. But by that vow, her mind will concentrate while she is unaware of it. Though there may be irregularity in a Vaiṣṇava vow, the result will still be given. Her efforts will thus be successful.
I promised, which cannot be violated, but Indra doesn't deserve killing — I have a suitable solution. Mature dharma navigates two conflicting duties without breaking either.

Purport
The word indra-hā refers to an asura who is always eager to kill Indra. An enemy of Indra is naturally a friend to the asuras, but the word indra-hā also refers to one who follows Indra or who is obedient to him. When one becomes a devotee of Indra, he is certainly a friend to the demigods. Thus the words indra-hādeva-bāndhavaḥ are equivocal, for they say, “Your son will kill Indra, but he will be very friendly to the demigods.” If a person actually became a friend of the demigods, he certainly would not be able to kill Indra.

Kaśyapa Muni said: My gentle wife! If you execute this vow properly for one year, you will get a son who will kill Indra and will be a friend of the demons.
The meaning desired by Diti was that she would get a son who would kill Indra and be a friend of the demons. Kaśyapa’s meaning however was that she would get a son who would follow Indra and be a friend of the devatās.
If you follow my vow strictly for one year, you'll have an Indra-killing son; if you deviate, the child will be Indra's friend. Conditional benedictions are real; the condition is real.
Reflection Questions
Have I taken seriously the conditions attached to spiritual benedictions?
Which 'vow' has hidden conditions I have not been honoring?
Diti replied: My dear brāhmaṇa, I must accept your advice and follow the vow. Now let me understand what I have to do, what is forbidden and what will not break the vow. Please clearly state all this to me.
Purport
As stated above, a woman is generally inclined to serve her own purposes. Kaśyapa Muni proposed to train Diti to fulfill her desires within one year, and since she was eager to kill Indra, she immediately agreed, saying, “Please let me know what the vow is and how I have to follow it. I promise that I shall do the needful and not break the vow.” This is another side of a woman’s psychology. Even though a woman is very fond of fulfilling her own plans, when someone instructs her, especially her husband, she innocently follows, and thus she can be trained for better purposes. By nature a woman wants to be a follower of a man; therefore if the man is good the woman can be trained for a good purpose.

Purport
Kaśyapa Muni’s first instruction to his wife was not to be envious. The general tendency of anyone within this material world is to be envious, and therefore, to become a Kṛṣṇa conscious person, one must curb this tendency, as stated in Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam ( paramo nirmatsarāṇām ). A Kṛṣṇa conscious person is always nonenvious, whereas others are always envious. Thus Kaśyapa Muni’s instruction that his wife not be envious indicates that this is the first stage of advancement in Kṛṣṇa consciousness. Kaśyapa Muni desired to train his wife to be a Kṛṣṇa conscious person, for this would suffice to protect both her and Indra.

Purport
Generally the goddess Kālī is offered food containing meat and fish, and therefore Kaśyapa Muni strictly forbade his wife to take the remnants of such food. Actually a Vaiṣṇava is not allowed to take any food offered to the demigods. A Vaiṣṇava is always fixed in accepting prasāda offered to Lord Viṣṇu. Through all these instructions, Kaśyapa Muni, in a negative way, instructed his wife Diti how to become a Vaiṣṇavī.

You should not go out in the evening or with your hair loose, nor should you go out unless you are properly decorated with ornaments. You should not leave the house unless you are very grave and are sufficiently covered.
Purport
Kaśyapa Muni advised his wife not to go out onto the street unless she was well decorated and well dressed. He did not encourage the miniskirts that have now become fashionable. In Oriental civilization, when a woman goes out onto the street, she must be fully covered so that no man will recognize who she is. All these methods are to be accepted for purification. If one is trained to honor and worship the cows and brāhmaṇas, he is actually civilized. The worship of the Supreme Lord is recommended, and the Lord is very fond of the cows and brāhmaṇas ( namo brahmaṇya-devāya go-brāhmaṇa-hitāya ca ). In other words, a civilization in which there is no respect for the cows and brāhmaṇas is condemned. One cannot become spiritually advanced without acquiring the brahminical qualifications and giving protection to cows. Cow protection insures sufficient food prepared with milk, which is needed for an advanced civilization. One should not pollute civilization by eating the flesh of cows. A civilization must do something progressive, and then it is an Āryan civilization. Instead of killing the cow to eat flesh, civilized men must prepare various milk products that will enhance the condition of society. If one follows the brahminical culture, he will become competent in Kṛṣṇa consciousness.

O King Parīkṣit, as the hunter of a deer becomes like a deer by covering his body with deerskin and serving the deer, so Indra, although at heart the enemy of the sons of Diti, became outwardly friendly and served Diti in a faithful way. Indra’s purpose was to cheat Diti as soon as he could find some fault in the way she discharged the vows of the ritualistic ceremony. However, he wanted to be undetected, and therefore he served her very carefully.

Translation
O King Parīkṣit! Just as a hunter becomes like a deer to kill the deer, so Indra served Diti with deceit, in order to find a fault in the vow of Diti who was fixed in her vow.
Indra desired to find some fault in her vow. This however was his misconception. Since whatever faults exist are nullified by remembering and glorifying Viṣṇu, her vow should also become faultless, even if there was a fault. It is said:
yasya smṛtyā ca nāmoktyā tapo-yajña-kriyādīṣu
nūnaṁ sampūrṇatām eti sadyo vande tam acyutam
I offer my obeisances unto the infallible Lord, because simply by either remembering him or chanting his name all penances, sacrifices or fruitive activities become perfect. Skanda Purāṇa
mantratas tantrataś chidraṁ deśa-kālārha-vastutaḥ
sarvaṁ karoti niśchidram anusaṅkīrtanaṁ tava
There may be discrepancies in pronouncing the mantras and observing the regulative principles, because of discrepancies in regard to time, place, person and paraphernalia. But when your name is chanted, everything becomes faultless. SB 8.23.16
It will be said later that Indra would not find any fault in her performance of vows. Mahāpuruṣa-pūjāyāḥ siddhiḥ kāpy ānuṣaṅgiṇī: liberation is a secondary result of worship of the Lord. (SB 6.18.73) Jihmaḥ means deception. The hunter disguises himself as a deer to cheat the deer. Similarly Indra disguised himself as a devoted servant to cheat Diti.
Personal Guidance
As a hunter dresses in deerskin to hunt deer, Indra outwardly served Diti while staying her enemy at heart. The image is direct: external form can be a hunter's costume.
Reflection Questions
Whose external service in my life might be a hunter's costume?
What discernment would help me see beneath the deerskin?

O master of the entire world! When Indra could find no faults, he became intensely worried. He thought, "How will there be good fortune for me?"
Personal Guidance
Finding no fault, Indra was anxious: how will good fortune come for me? Even when one's plan is to find a flaw, virtue's continuity is itself frustrating.

Having grown thin because of strictly following the vow, Diti, forgetting the rules, once went to sleep after eating, without performing ācamana and without washing her feet, during the twilight.
She did not perform ācamana or wash her feet.

Purport
Śrīla Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura remarks that Indra, by his yogic power, first expanded the body of the one Marut into seven, and then when he cut each of the seven parts of the original body into pieces, there were forty-nine. When each body was cut into seven, other living entities entered the new bodies, and thus they were like plants, which become separate entities when cut into various parts and planted on a hill. The first body was one, and when it was cut into many pieces, many other living entities entered the new bodies.

Translation
Indra, with the help of his thunderbolt, cut into seven pieces her embryo, which glowed like gold, and which began to cry. Indra told them, "Do not cry," and then he cut each of them into seven pieces again.
He said, “Do not cry” to comfort them. But then he cut them into seven more parts each. Some say that a single jīva can expand his body into forty-nine forms for a short time like a yogī or like someone else enjoying a lot of both piety and sin. Others say that knowing the future event, forty-nine jīvas entered into one body, and then entered each of the forty-nine parts when cut by Indra. Others say that forty-eight more jīvas entered each of the other parts the moment that Indra cut up the one fetus, just as separate jīvas enter each branch when a person cuts branches off a creeper or bush and plants them in the ground.
With his thunderbolt he cut the gold-glowing embryo into seven pieces; the seven cried; he said 'Do not cry' and cut each into seven — making forty-nine. Violence creates more bodies, not fewer.

If one worships the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the original person, even once, he receives the benefit of being promoted to the spiritual world and possessing the same bodily features as Viṣṇu. Diti worshiped Lord Viṣṇu for almost one year, adhering to a great vow. Because of such strength in spiritual life, the forty-nine Maruts were born. How, then, is it wonderful that the Maruts, although born from the womb of Diti, became equal to the demigods by the mercy of the Supreme Lord?
Gauḍīya Ācāryas
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura

Translation
If one worships the Supreme Lord even once, he attains the same bodily features as Viṣṇu. Because Diti worshiped Lord Viṣṇu for almost one year, the forty-nine Maruts became fifty devatās along with Indra. Viṣṇu removed the fault of their mother, and they became drinkers of soma.
Sāmyatām means “attaining similar human form.” Sajūḥ means “with.”

Personal Guidance
I prayed for one son but now I see forty-nine — how? Tell me the truth, do not lie. The vow-keeper still demands truth from her opponent-turned-helper.

Indra replied: My dear mother, because I was grossly blinded by selfish interests, I lost sight of religion. When I understood that you were observing a great vow in spiritual life, I wanted to find some fault in you. When I found such a fault, I entered your womb and cut the embryo to pieces.
Purport
When Diti, Indra’s aunt, explained to Indra without reservations what she had wanted to do, Indra explained his intentions to her. Thus both of them, instead of being enemies, freely spoke the truth. This is the qualification that results from contact with Viṣṇu. As stated in Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam (5.18.12) :
yasyāsti bhaktir bhagavaty akiñcanā sarvair guṇais tatra samāsate surāḥ

My dear mother, when I saw that all forty-nine sons were alive, I was certainly struck with wonder. I decided that this was a secondary result of your having regularly executed devotional service in worship of Lord Viṣṇu.
Purport
For one who engages in worshiping Lord Viṣṇu, nothing is very wonderful. This is a fact. In Bhagavad-gītā (18.78) it is said:
yatra yogeśvaraḥ kṛṣṇo yatra pārtho dhanur-dharaḥ tatra śrīr vijayo bhūtir dhruvā nītir matir mama
“Wherever there is Kṛṣṇa, the master of all mystics, and wherever there is Arjuna, the supreme archer, there will also certainly be opulence, victory, extraordinary power, and morality. That is my opinion.” Yogeśvara is the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the master of all mystic yoga, who can do anything and everything He likes. This is the omnipotence of the Supreme Lord. For one who pleases the Supreme Lord, no achievement is wonderful. Everything is possible for him.

Seeing that great wonder, I discerned the truth. Even liberation is a mere secondary result of worship of Lord Viṣṇu.
Vyavastiam means “I determined.” Two and half verses explain about Viṣṇu worship. Liberation (siddhiḥ) is a secondary result of the worship.

Seeing all forty-nine alive astonished me; I decided it was a secondary fruit of your devotional service to Viṣṇu. The opponent learns devotion's logic through its effects.
Reflection Questions
Whose opponent might be learning devotional logic by watching me?
What 'secondary fruit' am I producing without realizing?

Although those who are interested only in worshiping the Supreme Personality of Godhead do not desire anything material from the Lord and do not even want liberation, Lord Kṛṣṇa fulfills all their desires.
Purport
When Dhruva Mahārāja saw Lord Viṣṇu, he declined to take any benedictions from Him, for he was fully satisfied by seeing the Lord. Nonetheless, the Lord is so kind that because Dhruva Mahārāja, in the beginning, had desired a kingdom greater than his father’s, he was promoted to Dhruvaloka, the best planet in the universe. Therefore in the śāstra it is said:
“A person who has broader intelligence, whether he is full of material desires, free from material desires, or desiring liberation, must by all means worship the supreme whole, the Personality of Godhead.” ( Bhāg. 2.3.10 ) One should engage in full devotional service. Then, even though he has no desires, whatever desires he previously had can all be fulfilled simply by his worship of the Lord. The actual devotee does not desire even liberation ( anyābhilāṣitā-śūnyam ). The Lord, however, fulfills the desire of the devotee by awarding him opulence that will never be destroyed. A karmī’s opulence is destroyed, but the opulence of a devotee is never destroyed. A devotee becomes more and more opulent as he increases his devotional service to the Lord.

Translation
Those who, desiring only worship of the Supreme Lord and being without material desires, do not even want liberation, are considered expert in understanding their highest benefit.
Param means liberation. Those who desire liberation are ignorant of their own interests, desiring grass instead of the great treasure available. Because of the presence of the six great qualities in the Lord present before them, those who desire worship of the Lord are considered successful. It is said:
satyaṁ diśaty arthitam arthito nṛṇāṁ
naivārthado yat punar arthitā yataḥ
svayaṁ vidhatte bhajatām anicchatām
icchāpidhānaṁ nija-pāda-pallavam
The Lord certainly gives desired objects to devotees who request them, but he does not give in such a way that the devotee will ask again after finishing his enjoyment. He gives his lotus feet, which include all desirables, to those worshippers who do not desire material benefits. SB 5.19.27

Pure devotees do not desire anything material — not even liberation — yet Kṛṣṇa fulfills all their desires. Renunciation, paradoxically, draws fulfillment.

The ultimate goal of all ambitions is to become a servant of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. If an intelligent man serves the most dear Lord, who gives Himself to His devotees, how can he desire material happiness, which is available even in hell?
Purport
An intelligent man will never aspire to become a devotee to achieve material happiness. That is the test of a devotee. As Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu teaches:
na dhanaṁ na janaṁ na sundarīṁ kavitāṁ vā jagad-īśa kāmaye mama janmani janmanīśvare bhavatād bhaktir ahaitukī tvayi
“O almighty Lord, I have no desire to accumulate wealth, nor do I desire beautiful women, nor do I want any number of followers. I only want Your causeless devotional service birth after birth.” A pure devotee never begs the Lord for material happiness in the shape of riches, followers, a good wife or even mukti. The Lord promises, however, yoga-kṣemaṁ vahāmy aham: “I voluntarily bring everything necessary for My service.”

Chapter Nineteen
The Puṁsavana Vow
6.19: Performing the Puṁsavana Ritualistic Ceremony
19. Performing the Puṁsavana Ritualistic Ceremony
6.19 Summary
This chapter explains how Diti, Kaśyapa Muni's wife, executed Kaśyapa Muni's instructions on devotional service. During the first day of the bright fortnight of the moon in the month of Agrahāyaṇa (November-December), every woman, following in the footsteps of Diti and following the instructions of her own husband, should begin this puṁsavana-vrata. In the morning, after washing her teeth, bathing and thus becoming purified, she should hear about the birth mystery of the Maruts. Then, covering her body with a white dress and being properly ornamented, before breakfast she should worship Lord Viṣṇu and mother Lakṣmī, the goddess of fortune, Lord Viṣṇu's wife, by glorifying Lord Viṣṇu for His mercy, patience, prowess, ability, greatness and other glories and for how He can bestow all mystic benedictions. While offering the Lord all paraphernalia for worship, such as ornaments, a sacred thread, scents, nice flowers, incense and water for bathing and washing His feet, hands and mouth, one should invite the Lord with this mantra: oṁ namo bhagavate mahā-puruṣāya mahānubhāvāya mahāvibhūtipataye saha mahā-vibhūtibhir balim upaharāmi. Then one should offer twelve oblations in the fire while chanting this mantra: oṁ namo bhagavate mahā-puruṣāya mahāvibhūti-pataye svāhā. One should offer obeisances while chanting this mantra ten times. Then one should chant the Lakṣmī-Nārāyaṇa mantra.
If either a pregnant woman or her husband regularly discharges this devotional service, both of them will receive the result. After continuing this process for one full year, the chaste wife should fast on the pūrṇimā, the full-moon day, of Kārttika. On the following day, the husband should worship the Lord as before and then observe a festival by cooking nice food and distributing prasāda to the brāhmaṇas. Then, with the permission of the brāhmaṇas, the husband and wife should take prasāda. This chapter ends by glorifying the results of the puṁsavana function.
