Lord Indra, who is very much fond of sense gratification, has killed the two brothers Hiraṇyākṣa and Hiraṇyakaśipu by means of Lord Viṣṇu. Therefore Indra is cruel, hardhearted and sinful. When will I, having killed him, rest with a pacified mind?
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
I will rest in peace after having killed the sinful, cruel, heard-hearted Indra, a sense enjoyer, and a killer of two brothers. Ulbanam means cruel. Sukham śaye means “I sleep peacefully.”
Indra is fond of sense gratification and killed my sons through Viṣṇu — cruel, hardhearted, sinful; when will I rest pacified, having killed him? Vengeance gets rationalized with theological language.
Reflection Questions
  • Where am I dressing up vengeance with high-sounding analysis?
  • What would honest grieving look like instead of plotting?
