D - Dwarf Incarnation (15-24) When the demons came back and gained an upper hand on the demigods, Lord Vamanadeva appeared as the son of Aditi. The unassuming Dwarf incarnation humbly begged three steps of land from Bali Maharaja. Though Sukracarya warned his disciple that the Lord had come to trick him, Bali rejected his guru and remained determined to honour dharma and fulfil Vamanadeva’s request. He thus went down in history as one of the twelve great personalities (mahajanas) for first giving the Lord the entire universe, and then surrendering his very self. We come into the world empty-handed and leave empty-handed. If in the interim we can dedicate everything to Krishna, we escape the trap of attachment and the subsequent suffering that comes with it.

Aditi and the Dwarf Incarnation

D - Dwarf Incarnation (15-24) Aditi and the Dwarf Incarnation Chapter 16, 17, 18 When the demigods fled, their mother, Aditi, became morose. Observing her demeanour, Kasyapa Muni tried to ascertain the cause and advised her that only the Lord could provide permanent solutions to life’s problems. When she enquired how to worship the Lord and seek His shelter, Kasyapa guided her through the intricate details of the payo-vrata sacrifice (a rigorous austerity in which one subsists only on milk). After successfully completing the twelve-day sacrifice, the Lord suddenly appeared before Aditi, much to her delight. Aditi offered prayers in a faltering voice, and without her even mentioning it, the Lord understood her motherly concern for the demigods. Because of her devotion and Kasyapa Muni’s austerities, the Lord reassured them that He would find an ingenious way to overthrow the demons. By mystic perception, Kasyapa Muni understood that the Lord had entered within him, and he thus impregnated Aditi. At the auspicious hour, Lord Vamanadeva appeared in the world, equipped with all transcendental paraphernalia, and then assumed the form of a dwarf brahmacari . Various demigods and sages spontaneously arrived to celebrate the Lord’s advent, bringing Him gifts of love and beautiful praise.

Bali's Fightback

D - Dwarf Incarnation (15-24) Bali's Fightback Chapter 15 While detailing the Manus, Sukadeva Goswami briefly mentioned the incident of Bali Maharaja and Vamanadeva in the Vaivasvata Manu. Maharaja Pariksit requested to know more about this. After being crushed by the demigods, Bali Maharaja and the demons were mystically revived back to good health by the grace of Sukracarya, their guru. The brahmana friends of Bali Maharaja then engaged him in a sacrifice to gain cosmic control ( visvajit-yajna ), and as a result he received celestial equipment and formidable boons to multiply his power. With renewed vigour and enthusiasm, Bali Maharaja laid siege on Indra’s beautiful city. Brhaspati, the guru of the demigods, informed them that they stood no chance unless the Lord personally appeared. The demigods thus fled in fear as the demons took control of the heavenly domain. Determined as ever, Bali continued to perform sacrifices to strengthen his position and increase his influence.

Donation for the Dwarf

D - Dwarf Incarnation (15-24) Donation for the Dwarf Chapter 18, 19, 20 Vamanadeva journeyed to Bali Maharaja’s sacrificial arena and appeared in the assembly looking like a young, innocent brahmacari . The priests fittingly received Him, while Bali Maharaja humbly washed His feet. Stunned by His beauty and effulgence, Bali openheartedly offered Him any charity He desired. Vamanadeva glorified Bali Maharaja’s generosity, which was in keeping with his family tradition. After all, great personalities like Prahlada Maharaja had appeared in this lineage. The Dwarf incarnation then made His request for a mere three steps of land. Bali Maharaja encouraged Him to ask for more, while Sukracarya vehemently warned his disciple not to give even an inch! The spiritual master of the demons was well aware of the Lord’s ingenious plan, which would strip Bali Maharaja of everything and reinstate the demigods into power. He deviously suggested a get-out clause to save the day. Uninterested and undeterred, Bali Maharaja rejected Sukracarya and readily agreed to Vamanadeva’s request, seeing it as his duty and religion to wholeheartedly offer charity to a brahmana. How could he retract his promise? When Bali Maharaja agreed to His request, Vamanadeva miraculously expanded Himself and Bali witnessed the entire creation resting within His body. With His first step, the Lord effortlessly covered the entire surface of the world, and by extending His body further, He covered the entire sky. With His hands He covered all directions. Then, with His second footstep, He covered the entire upper planetary system. Having comprehensively occupied everything in creation, the question remained as to where the Lord would place His third step.

Matsya Avatara

D - Dwarf Incarnation (15-24) Matsya Avatara Chapter 24 Responding to Maharaja Pariksit’s enquiry, Sukadeva Goswami narrated the pastimes of Matsya, the first incarnation of the Lord, who appeared in two different Manvantaras. When the demon Hayagriva wanted to steal the Vedic knowledge away from Lord Brahma at the time of annihilation, the Lord appeared as a fish. Matsya avatara killed the demon, saved the Vedas, and then delivered that knowledge to Brahma when he awakened from slumber. [ 26 ] When King Satyavrata, who subsisted only on water, offered shelter to a small fish and kept it in a water jug, he wasn’t aware that it was the Supreme Lord. The fish expanded His body, and though the king offered bigger and bigger residences, from a jug, to a well, to a lake, and to the sea, it was all insufficient. The King then understood the fish’s divine identity. The Lord informed him that there would be an inundation within a week during which the King and all living entities would be protected in a boat which would be attached to the transcendental fish’s horn. This indeed transpired. Having been saved, King Satyavrata offered many beautiful prayers to the Lord. In response, the Lord illuminated Satyavrata with the essence of Vedic wisdom.

Prahlada's Reassurance and Demigods Reinstated

D - Dwarf Incarnation (15-24) Prahlada's Reassurance and Demigods Reinstated Chapter 22, 23 Seeing his grandson’s incredible display of surrender, Prahlada Maharaja arrived there and reassured Bali that he was actually the fortunate recipient of the Lord’s mercy; when the Lord especially favours someone, He takes everything away. Lord Brahma and Bali’s wife, Vindhyavali, glorified the supremacy of the Lord and offered various prayers. When they requested that Bali Maharaja be released, the Lord happily agreed and promised him all protection. Seeing Bali Maharaja’s humility and sincerity, Lord Vishnu awarded him the special planet known as Sutala. Aditi’s desire to reinstate the demigods was thus fulfilled, as – Indra and the other cosmic rulers resumed their responsibilities within the universe.

Surrender

D - Dwarf Incarnation (15-24) Surrender “The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Krishna, advises, sarva-dharman parityajya mam ekam saranam vraja : “Give up all other varieties of religion and just surrender unto Me.” The common man does not appreciate such a statement by the Supreme Personality of Godhead because he thinks that during his lifetime his family, society, country, body and relatives are everything. Why should one give up any one of them and take shelter of the Supreme Personality of Godhead? But from the behaviour of great personalities like Prahlada Maharaja and Bali Maharaja we understand that surrendering to the Lord is the right action for an intelligent person. Prahlada Maharaja took shelter of Vishnu against the will of his father. Similarly, Bali Maharaja took shelter of Vamanadeva against the will of his spiritual master, Sukracarya, and all the leading demons.” (SB 8.22.9) In the Bhakti-rasamrita Sindhu (1.2.265) Rupa Goswami delineates the nine processes of devotional service, and the various personalities who perfected those practices. When he comes to atma-nivedanam , the act of complete surrender, he establishes Bali Maharaja as the shining example ( sarvasvatma-nivedane balir ). This is the ultimate goal established by Krishna at the conclusion of the Bhagavad-gita, where he implores Arjuna to abandon all religious duties ( dharma ) and embrace complete surrender. Bali Maharaja fully embodied this spirit of a Vaisnava that Bhaktivinoda Thakura sings of: “Mind, body, and family, whatever may be mine, I have surrendered at Your lotus feet, O youthful son of Nanda!” (Bhaktivinoda Thakura, Saranagati)

Surrender - Natural but Gradual

D - Dwarf Incarnation (15-24) Surrender Surrender - Natural but Gradual Such surrender is actually the easiest and most natural thing in creation. Since the essence of our being, as eternal servants of Krishna, lies in being completely aligned to the will of God, when we try to avoid it we inevitably struggle in problems and pain. Although completely natural, the reality is that the process must be gradual. In the journey of Krishna consciousness there is an external and internal surrender. We begin with the most tangible and measurable things, the external aspects of the process. Once we have embraced that, we progressively try to deepen our internal mood and consciousness. Indeed, this aligning of the activities and mind brings one to a liberated platform: “ One who engages in the transcendental service of the Lord in body, mind and word is to be considered liberated in all conditions of material existence .” (BRS 1.2.187) We begin with the externals. Following scriptural injunctions, the acaryas have prescribed a set of devotional practices which include reading, chanting, worshipping and finding practical ways to serve Krishna. These items of bhakti allow us to live and function with Krishna in the centre. Along with such devotional practices, we embrace a certain lifestyle. There are certain yamas (don’ts) and niyamas (dos) and we adopt those habits knowing that they aid the spiritual practices we are performing. Along with the personal practices and lifestyle, the practitioner also assumes a spiritual identity. They surround themselves with spiritual people, conducting their social life with spiritual elements incorporated, re-aligning their life goals and aspirations, and identifying themselves with a particular spiritual group or movement. This external surrender is indeed a seismic shift in someone’s life. Yet Krishna goes further. Surrender cannot be reduced to external adjustments. In essence, surrender means a change of consciousness and a change of heart. When defining surrender, Bhaktivinoda Thakura outlines six cardinal principles: “The six divisions of surrender are the acceptance of those things favourable to devotional service, the rejection of unfavourable things, the conviction that Krishna will give protection, the acceptance of the Lord as one’s guardian or master, full self-surrender and humility.” ( CC Madhya 22.100 ) The first two items relate to the mind, which is always accepting and rejecting. For the surrendered soul, the activities of the mind are aligned with pleasing Krishna. Indeed, Krishna explains that one should purify the mind and use it as a means for elevation. The second two items refer to our intelligence. Material intelligence is based around the consciousness of being the controller and enjoyer, calculating and concluding on immediate action and reaction, without seeing the bigger picture. For the surrendered soul, one’s intelligence is founded upon the scriptural understanding that Krishna is the controller, enjoyer and ultimate object of service. The final two items deal with the ego. Pride and selfishness haunt those who are rooted in the bodily concept of life and plagued by false ego. When one surrenders, the real ego of being a menial servant and simple instrument, brings with it a profound depth of humility and selflessness. As we live a life of surrender, our vision evolves. Instead of seeing the world and everything within it from our point of view, we’ll begin seeing it from Krishna’s point of view. He will receive the first communication in the day, the first consideration in any decision, the first show of gratitude in success or failure, and the first place in our hearts.

Previous Types of Surrender Next Sustainable Surrender Last updated 1 year ago

Sustainable Surrender

D - Dwarf Incarnation (15-24) Surrender Sustainable Surrender While aspiring for such deep surrender, our progress towards that end goal must be incremental, realistic and sustainable. If we adopt a practice of surrender which is beyond our means, we may well find we lose hope and enthusiasm altogether. In the name of surrender, we can end up neglecting ourselves and thus erode our ability to continue the journey. In our aspiration for surrender, we can often undertake rigorous commitments in spiritual practice, and accept high levels of practical spiritual responsibilities. While commendable, we must judge whether it’s sustainable. We may embrace a life which mirrors our aspirations, but we may not have the capacity to live at that level just yet. Thus, when crafting our own individual process of surrender, we must consult others to see how to bend ourselves without breaking. In the pursuance of complete self-surrender, we should ensure that there are healthy inputs on the bodily level (physical health), mental level (good relationships) and spiritual level (good sadhana ). Neglecting these vital elements will, in most cases, almost certainly impede one’s progress to pure surrender.

Types of Surrender

D - Dwarf Incarnation (15-24) Surrender Types of Surrender Some people surrender to God because they are scared; they fear the consequences of rebelling against His will, and thus embrace surrender to preserve their comfort and security. Others surrender to God out of helplessness; having tried everything else, they see no other recourse or option. Some surrender with selfish motivations in mind; they know that a powerful superior can help them achieve what they want. Beyond all such types of surrender, is a spontaneous surrender out of love. This kind of surrender, which is what Krishna recommends, is total and perfect – completely aligning our will with the Supreme will, knowing the happiness of the Lord is not separate from our own. Jesus Christ, for example, surrendered totally and willfully. On the cross his last words were, “Father, into Thy hands I commend my spirit.” (Luke, 23.46)

The Third Step

D - Dwarf Incarnation (15-24) The Third Step Chapter 21, 22 The demigods glorified the extraordinary acts of the Lord, while the demons complained and criticised. In a fit of fury, they attacked Vamanadeva, but were comfortably dispatched by the various associates of Lord. The demons were driven out, while Bali Maharaja was arrested and brought to the Lord. Lord Vishnu enquired from Bali Maharaja about where to place His third step. Failure to do so would mean instant punishment. Troubled by his inability to honour his word, Bali considered deeply what to do. He was then inspired to offer his head as the place for the third step. This is akin to those who sacrifice their entire lives to selflessly serve the Lord. The Lord thus became famed as Trivikrama, ‘He who took three great strides,’ and Urukrama, ‘He who performs wonderful acts.’

Śukadeva Gosvāmī said: After Lord Brahmā had thus spoken, glorifying the Supreme Lord’s activities and prowess, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is never subject to death like an ordinary living being, appeared from the womb of Aditi. His four hands were decorated with a conchshell, club, lotus and disc, He was dressed in yellow garments, and His eyes appeared like the petals of a blooming lotus.

The word amṛta-bhūḥ is significant in this verse. The Lord sometimes appears like an ordinary child taking birth, but this does not mean that He is subject to birth, death or old age. One must be very intelligent to understand the appearance and activities of the Supreme Lord in His incarnations. This is confirmed in Bhagavad-gītā (4.9) : janma karma ca me divyam evaṁ yo vetti tattvataḥ. One should try to understand that the Lord’s appearance and disappearance and His activities are all divyam, or transcendental. The Lord has nothing to do with material activities. One who understands the appearance, disappearance and activities of the Lord is immediately liberated. After giving up his body, he never again has to accept a material body, but is transferred to the spiritual world ( tyaktvā dehaṁ punar janma naiti mām eti so ’rjuna ).

— A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
Śukadeva Gosvāmī said: After Lord Brahmā glorified the Lord's prowess, the Lord, whose appearance is not subject to death, with lotus eyes and yellow garments, appeared from the womb of Aditi with four hands bearing a conch, club, lotus and disc. In the Eighteenth Chapter, Vāmana, wearing a sacred thread, goes to the sacrifice performed by Bali and begs a boon from him. His appearance is without death or destruction (amṛta-bhūḥ). It is said janma-karma ca me divyam: by birth and activities are transcendental. (BG 4.9) śaṅkha-gadā-abja-cakraḥ means “possessing conch, club, lotus and wheel. [Note: Arśādibhyo c: the suffix ac is added to words starting with arśa with a possessive meaning. Pāṇini .2.127]” Another version has śaṅkha-gadā-abja-cakra, without the visarga. It is then part of a compound with piśaṅga-vāsāḥ.
After Brahmā's prayers, the Lord — never subject to death like an ordinary being — appeared from Aditi's womb in four-armed form, conch, club, lotus, disc. The birth that looks ordinary is not ordinary at all. Read divine appearances with intelligence.
Reflection Questions
  • Where do I read scriptural 'births' as ordinary biological events, missing their transcendental nature?
  • What sign of the Lord's transcendence have I been overlooking in my own life because it looked ordinary?

The various seasons displayed their respective qualities, and all living entities in the upper planetary system, in outer space and on the surface of the earth were jubilant. The devatās, the cows, the brāhmaṇas and the mountains were all filled with joy. Agni-jihvāh means the devatās. Nagāḥ means mountains.
Joy everywhere — in directions, waters, hearts, seasons, demigods, cows, brāhmaṇas, hills. The cosmos responds to His arrival with universal cheer. Divine birth is felt across systems, not just in the household.
Reflection Questions
  • What 'arrival' in my circle should produce cross-system joy — and do I let it?
  • Where am I tone-deaf to the cosmic celebration around a sacred event?

On the day of Śravaṇa-dvādaśī [the twelfth day of the bright fortnight in the month of Bhādra], when the moon came into the lunar mansion Śravaṇa, at the auspicious moment of Abhijit, the Lord appeared in this universe. Considering the Lord’s appearance very auspicious, all the stars and planets, from the sun to Saturn, were munificently charitable.

Śrīla Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura, an expert astrologer, explains the word nakṣatra-tārādyāḥ. The word nakṣatra means “the stars,” the word tāra in this context refers to the planets, and ādyāḥ means “the first one specifically mentioned.” Among the planets, the first is Sūrya, the sun, not the moon. Therefore, according to the Vedic version, the modern astronomer’s proposition that the moon is nearest to the earth should not be accepted. The chronological order in which people all over the world refer to the days of the week — Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday — corresponds to the Vedic order of the planets and thus circumstantiates the Vedic version. Apart from this, when the Lord appeared the planets and stars became situated very auspiciously, according to astrological calculations, to celebrate the birth of the Lord.

— A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
On the day of Dvādaśī of Bhādra month, when the moon was in the constellation Śravaṇa, at the auspicious moment of Abhijit, the Lord appeared in this universe. All the constellations and planets were generous. This verse describes the time of his appearance. Śravaṇa-dvādaśī means the bright fortnight dvādaśī of Bhādra month. The moon was in Śravaṇa constellation. The moon was also in the first portion of Śravaṇa constellation called Abhijit. Śruti says abhijin nāma nakṣatram upariṣṭād āśāḍhāyaḥ śravanāyā adhastāt: Abhijit constellation is above Āśāḍha and below Śravaṇa constellation. Astrological works also says uttarāṣādhāśeṣārdhāt śravaṇādau liptakā-catuṣke ca abhijit tatstha khecare vijñeya rohiṇī-viddha: Abhijit consists of the last quarter of Uttarāṣāḍha constellation and the first quarter of Śravaṇa constellation. Muhūrte hear means “at a suitably auspicious time.” Or abhijite muhūrte can mean “with an auspicious ascendant which give complete victory.” The indications of victory are described. The constellations such as Aśvinī and the planets (tāra) such as Jupiter and Venus, as well as the luminaries consisting of the sun and moon (ādyāḥ) were very generous (dakṣiṇam) at his birth. This is Śrīdhara Svāmī’s commentary.
Śravaṇa-dvādaśī, moon in Śravaṇa, Abhijit moment — sun to Saturn, all planets charitable. Even astrology is moved by His arrival. Stars themselves participate in the welcome.
Reflection Questions
  • Where do I separate the cosmos from sacred timing, treating astrological alignment as superstition?
  • What if the universe really is set up to celebrate certain moments — and which am I missing?

The Lord appeared in His original form, with ornaments and weapons in His hands. Although this ever-existing form is not visible in the material world, He nonetheless appeared in this form. Then, in the presence of His father and mother, He assumed the form of Vāmana, a brāhmaṇa-dwarf, a brahmacārī, just like a theatrical actor.

The word naṭaḥ is significant. An actor changes dress to play different parts, but is always the same man. Similarly, as described in the Brahma-saṁhitā (5.33, 39), the Lord assumes many thousands and millions of forms ( advaitam acyutam anādim ananta-rūpam ādyaṁ purāṇa-puruṣam ). He is always present with innumerable incarnations ( rāmādi-mūrtiṣu kalā-niyamena tiṣṭhan nānāvatāram akarod bhuvaneṣu kintu ). Nonetheless, although He appears in various incarnations, they are not different from one another. He is the same person, with the same potency, the same eternity and the same spiritual existence, but He can simultaneously assume various forms. When Vāmanadeva appeared from the womb of His mother, He appeared in the form of Nārāyaṇa, with four hands equipped with the necessary symbolic weapons, and then immediately transformed Himself into a brahmacārī ( vaṭu ). This means that His body is not material. One who thinks that the Supreme Lord assumes a material body is not intelligent. He has to learn more about the Lord’s position. As confirmed in Bhagavad-gītā (4.9) , janma karma ca me divyam evaṁ yo vetti tattvataḥ. One has to understand the transcendental appearance of the Lord in His original transcendental body ( sac-cid-ānanda-vigraha ).

— A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
The Lord, whose body is eternally endowed with ornaments and weapons and is invisible to the world and who has a spiritual form, became visible. Then, in the presence of his parents, to please them, the Lord, like an actor whose actions are hard to understand, became Vāmana, a brāhmaṇa-dwarf, a brahmacārī. The Lord whose body appears with ornaments and weapons became visible. “Appears” is in the present tense to indicate that his body is eternal. That body, which is also invisible and has a spiritual svarūpa, became visible (adhārayat). He did not accept a form temporarily. He did this to please his parents. He did not do this by any material means. The Lord, like an actor with great powers of yoga, whose actions are hard to understand (divya), produces a body different from his original form, but does it so there is non-difference. In this way the Lord manifested a body which was spiritual.
He appeared in original four-armed form, then in His parents' presence assumed the Vāmana dwarf-brahmacārī form like a theatrical actor. The actor remains the same despite costume change. Forms are roles; identity is one.
Reflection Questions
  • Where do I confuse the Lord's various roles for many gods?
  • What single identity holds together the many roles I myself play across the day?

When the great sages saw the Lord as the brahmacārī-dwarf Vāmana, they were certainly very pleased. Thus they placed before them Kaśyapa Muni, the Prajāpati, and performed all the ritualistic ceremonies, such as the birthday ceremony.

According to Vedic civilization, when a child is born in the family of a brāhmaṇa, the birthday ceremony, known as jāta-karma, is first performed, and then other ceremonies are also gradually performed. But when this vāmana-rūpa appeared in the form of a vaṭu, or brahmacārī, His sacred thread ceremony was also performed immediately.

— A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
The great sages, seeing the brahmacārī-dwarf Vāmana, joyfully putting Kaśyapa in front, had him perform the saṁskāras. Karmāṇi refers to saṁskāras like hair cutting and giving the thread.
The sages, seeing Vāmana, performed His birthday ceremony and sacred-thread ceremony immediately. Even an incarnation undergoes saṁskāras. Ritual is honored, not skipped, even when the divine doesn't strictly need it.

Translation
At the sacred thread ceremony of Vāmanadeva, the sun-god uttered the Gāyatrī mantra, Bṛhaspati offered the sacred thread, and Kaśyapa offered a straw belt.
At the sacred thread ceremony, the sun-god gave the Gāyatrī mantra, Bṛhaspati gave the thread, Kaśyapa the straw belt. Each contributor brought what was theirs to give. Even the highest ceremony is participatory.

Translation
Mother earth gave him a deerskin, and the devatā of the moon, who is the king of the forest, gave him a staff. His mother, Aditi, gave him cloth for underwear, and Svarga offered the lord of the universe an umbrella.

Translation
When Vāmanadeva had thus been given the sacred thread, Kuvera, King of the Yakṣas, gave him a pot for begging alms, and chaste mother Umā, the wife of Lord Śiva, gave him alms. Pātrikām means a bowl for begging.
Kuvera, king of Yakṣas, gave the begging bowl; Bhagavatī, Śiva's wife, mother of the universe, gave the first alms. Even begging is dignified by who gives. The very tools of mendicancy are sanctified by divine providers.

Recognized by his spiritual effulgence as a brahmacārī, the best of brahmacārīs surpassed the assembly of great sages and made it look glorious. He was honored by his spiritual effulgence. This means everyone recognized him as a brahmacārī. Atiyarocata means he surpassed the assembly of sages and made it glorious.

After Vāmanadeva kindled a sacrificial fire, heaped the ingredients, and performed worship, he performed a sacrifice by offering wood.
Vāmana set a sacrificial fire, offered worship, performed a fire sacrifice on the field. The Lord Himself models yajña. Even He performs sacrifice. We have no excuse to be above ritual.

When the Lord heard that Bali Mahārāja was performing aśvamedha sacrifices under the patronage of brāhmaṇas belonging to the Bhṛgu dynasty, the Supreme Lord, who is full in every respect, proceeded there to show His mercy to Bali Mahārāja. By His weight, He pushed down the earth with every step.

The Supreme Personality of Godhead is akhila-sāra-sambhṛta. In other words, He is the proprietor of everything essential in this material world. Thus although the Lord was going to Bali Mahārāja to beg something, He is always complete and has nothing to beg from anyone. Indeed, He is so powerful that in His full opulence He pressed down the surface of the earth at every step.

— A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
When the Lord heard that strong Bali Mahārāja was sponsoring horse sacrifices performed by followers of Bhṛgu, the Supreme Lord, who is full in every respect, proceeded there, depressing the earth with his weighty qualities at every step. Bhṛgūṇām upakalpitaiḥ means “performed by the followers of Bhṛgu.” Akhila-sāra-sambhṛtaḥ means the Lord was full of qualities like discrimination, patience and learning. He made the earth bow down by the weight of his power and mercy.
Hearing of Bali's aśvamedha under the Bhṛgus, the Lord — proprietor of everything — went to show Bali mercy, pressing earth at every step. He goes to 'beg' though He owns all; His begging is mercy disguised.

Translation
While the descendants of Bhṛgu speculated in the this way, the Supreme Lord, holding in his hands a rod, umbrella and a pot full of water, entered the arena of the horse sacrifice. Just as the priests speculated, so the descendents of Bhṛgu (other brāhmaṇas) speculated about Vāmanadeva. Hayamedha-vāṭam means the pavilion for the horse sacrifice.
While they argued and speculated, Vāmana — holding rod, umbrella, and waterpot — entered the arena. He does not wait for them to figure out who He is. Action precedes recognition. The Lord proceeds while we debate.

Appearing as a brāhmaṇa boy, wearing a belt of straw, a sacred thread, an upper garment of deerskin, and matted locks of hair, Lord Vāmanadeva entered the arena of sacrifice. His brilliant effulgence diminished the brilliance of all the priests and their disciples, who thus stood from their seats and welcomed the Lord properly by offering obeisances.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
Seeing the brāhmaṇa dwarf appearing to be a human being enter the arena of sacrifice wearing a belt of muñja grass, a sacred thread, an upper garment of deerskin, and matted locks of hair, descendents of Bhṛgu and their disciples, their effulgence diminished along with that of the fire, stood up and welcomed him according to the rules. They saw the Lord having the form of a small boy (māyā-mānavakam), with belt, sacred thread, and deerskin upper garment. Māyā can refer to the Lord’s svarūpa-śakti of the śruti says nitya-śaktyā māyākhyayā yutaḥ: the Lord is endowed with eternal śakti called māyā. They honored Vāmana by bowing, and offering foot water and arghya according to the rules (pratyagṛhnan). Medinī says pratigṛaha means acceptance, the rear guard of the army, a spittoon, a gift to the brāhmaṇas according to the rules
Appearing as a brāhmaṇa boy in straw belt, sacred thread, deerskin, matted hair, with diminishing effulgence, He entered — the priests stood and offered obeisances. Even disguised as a small boy, He commands rising and reverence.
Reflection Questions
  • Whose modest appearance in my life has commanded my standing-and-bowing — and have I responded?
  • Where do I stay seated when scripture would have me rise?

Bali, the sponsor, jubilant at seeing Lord Vāmanadeva, whose beautiful limbs contributed equally to the beauty of his entire body, offered him a seat.
Bali was jubilant; Vāmana's limbs contributed equally to His beauty. Bali offered Him a seat with great satisfaction. Even the demon king receives the Lord properly. Etiquette of welcome transcends sides.

Lord Śiva, the best of demigods, who carries on his forehead the emblem of the moon, receives on his head with great devotion the Ganges water emanating from the toe of Viṣṇu. Being aware of religious principles, Bali Mahārāja knew this. Consequently, following in the footsteps of Lord Śiva, he also placed on his head the water that had washed the Lord’s lotus feet.

Lord Śiva is known as Gaṅgā-dhara, or one who carries the water of the Ganges on his head. On Lord Śiva’s forehead is the emblem of the half-moon, yet to give supreme respect to the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Śiva placed the water of the Ganges above this emblem. This example should be followed by everyone, or at least by every devotee, because Lord Śiva is one of the mahājanas. Similarly, Mahārāja Bali also later became a mahājana. One mahājana follows another mahājana, and by following the paramparā system of mahājana activities one can become advanced in spiritual consciousness. The water of the Ganges is sanctified because it emanates from the toe of Lord Viṣṇu. Bali Mahārāja washed the lotus feet of Vāmanadeva, and the water with which he did so became equal to the Ganges. Bali Mahārāja, who perfectly knew all religious principles, therefore took that water on his head, following in the footsteps of Lord Śiva.

— A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
Being aware of religious principles, Bali Mahārāja placed on his head the Lord's foot water which destroys all sins, and which Śiva, with the moon in his forehead, carries on the top of his head with great devotion. Though Śiva carries the moon on his forehead, he carries the Gaṅgā, the foot water of Vāmana, above that.
Knowing that Śiva himself receives Gaṅgā from the Lord's toe, Bali placed the foot-washing water on his own head. He followed the mahājana's example. We follow the saints who follow the saints; the chain is unbroken.

O son of a brāhmaṇa! Today the fire of sacrifice has been worshipped according to the rules, and I have been freed from all the sinful reactions of my life by your foot water. By the marks of your small lotus feet the entire surface of the world has been sanctified. I have been purified by the water from your feet. Thus end the Bhaktivedanta purports of the Eighth Canto, Eighteenth Chapter, of the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, entitled “Lord Vāmanadeva, the Dwarf Incarnation.”

— A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
O son of a brāhmaṇa! O brahmacārī! It appears that you have come here to ask me for something. Take from me whatever you want. O best of those who are worshipable! Take from me a cow, gold, a furnished house, palatable food and drink, the daughter of a brāhmaṇa for your wife, prosperous villages, horses, elephants, or chariots. Thus ends the commentary on the Eighteenth Chapter of the Eighth Canto of the Bhāgavatam for the pleasure of the devotees, in accordance with the previous ācāryas. Chapter Nineteen Vāmana Begs For Land 8.19: Lord Vāmanadeva Begs Charity from Bali Mahārāja 19. Lord Vāmanadeva Begs Charity from Bali Mahārāja 8.19 Summary This Nineteenth Chapter describes how Lord Vāmanadeva asked for three paces of land in charity, how Bali Mahārāja agreed to His proposal, and how Śukrācārya forbade Bali Mahārāja to fulfill Lord Vāmanadeva's request. When Bali Mahārāja, thinking Vāmanadeva to be the son of a brāhmaṇa, told Him to ask for anything He liked, Lord Vāmanadeva praised Hiraṇyakaśipu and Hiraṇyākṣa for their heroic activities, and after thus praising the family in which Bali Mahārāja had been born, He begged the King for three paces of land. Bali Mahārāja agreed to give this land in charity, since this was very insignificant, but Śukrācārya, who could understand that Vāmanadeva was Viṣṇu, the friend of the demigods, forbade Bali Mahārāja to give this land. Śukrācārya advised Bali Mahārāja to withdraw his promise. He explained that in subduing others, in joking, in responding to danger, in acting for the welfare of others, and so on, one could refuse to fulfill one's promise, and there would be no fault. By this philosophy, Śukrācārya tried to dissuade Bali Mahārāja from giving land to Lord Vāmanadeva.
It seems You have come to ask — take what You want: cow, gold, house, food, brāhmaṇa's daughter, villages, horses, elephants, chariots, anything. Bali's pre-promise is unlimited. The demon king models reckless generosity before the Lord.
Reflection Questions
  • Have I ever pre-promised the Lord 'anything You want' the way Bali does here?
  • Where do I qualify my generosity in advance, hedging what I will give?
