D - Dwarf Incarnation (15-24) When the demons came back and gained an upper hand on the demigods, Lord Vamanadeva appeared as the son of Aditi. The unassuming Dwarf incarnation humbly begged three steps of land from Bali Maharaja. Though Sukracarya warned his disciple that the Lord had come to trick him, Bali rejected his guru and remained determined to honour dharma and fulfil Vamanadeva’s request. He thus went down in history as one of the twelve great personalities (mahajanas) for first giving the Lord the entire universe, and then surrendering his very self. We come into the world empty-handed and leave empty-handed. If in the interim we can dedicate everything to Krishna, we escape the trap of attachment and the subsequent suffering that comes with it.

Aditi and the Dwarf Incarnation

D - Dwarf Incarnation (15-24) Aditi and the Dwarf Incarnation Chapter 16, 17, 18 When the demigods fled, their mother, Aditi, became morose. Observing her demeanour, Kasyapa Muni tried to ascertain the cause and advised her that only the Lord could provide permanent solutions to life’s problems. When she enquired how to worship the Lord and seek His shelter, Kasyapa guided her through the intricate details of the payo-vrata sacrifice (a rigorous austerity in which one subsists only on milk). After successfully completing the twelve-day sacrifice, the Lord suddenly appeared before Aditi, much to her delight. Aditi offered prayers in a faltering voice, and without her even mentioning it, the Lord understood her motherly concern for the demigods. Because of her devotion and Kasyapa Muni’s austerities, the Lord reassured them that He would find an ingenious way to overthrow the demons. By mystic perception, Kasyapa Muni understood that the Lord had entered within him, and he thus impregnated Aditi. At the auspicious hour, Lord Vamanadeva appeared in the world, equipped with all transcendental paraphernalia, and then assumed the form of a dwarf brahmacari . Various demigods and sages spontaneously arrived to celebrate the Lord’s advent, bringing Him gifts of love and beautiful praise.

Bali's Fightback

D - Dwarf Incarnation (15-24) Bali's Fightback Chapter 15 While detailing the Manus, Sukadeva Goswami briefly mentioned the incident of Bali Maharaja and Vamanadeva in the Vaivasvata Manu. Maharaja Pariksit requested to know more about this. After being crushed by the demigods, Bali Maharaja and the demons were mystically revived back to good health by the grace of Sukracarya, their guru. The brahmana friends of Bali Maharaja then engaged him in a sacrifice to gain cosmic control ( visvajit-yajna ), and as a result he received celestial equipment and formidable boons to multiply his power. With renewed vigour and enthusiasm, Bali Maharaja laid siege on Indra’s beautiful city. Brhaspati, the guru of the demigods, informed them that they stood no chance unless the Lord personally appeared. The demigods thus fled in fear as the demons took control of the heavenly domain. Determined as ever, Bali continued to perform sacrifices to strengthen his position and increase his influence.

Donation for the Dwarf

D - Dwarf Incarnation (15-24) Donation for the Dwarf Chapter 18, 19, 20 Vamanadeva journeyed to Bali Maharaja’s sacrificial arena and appeared in the assembly looking like a young, innocent brahmacari . The priests fittingly received Him, while Bali Maharaja humbly washed His feet. Stunned by His beauty and effulgence, Bali openheartedly offered Him any charity He desired. Vamanadeva glorified Bali Maharaja’s generosity, which was in keeping with his family tradition. After all, great personalities like Prahlada Maharaja had appeared in this lineage. The Dwarf incarnation then made His request for a mere three steps of land. Bali Maharaja encouraged Him to ask for more, while Sukracarya vehemently warned his disciple not to give even an inch! The spiritual master of the demons was well aware of the Lord’s ingenious plan, which would strip Bali Maharaja of everything and reinstate the demigods into power. He deviously suggested a get-out clause to save the day. Uninterested and undeterred, Bali Maharaja rejected Sukracarya and readily agreed to Vamanadeva’s request, seeing it as his duty and religion to wholeheartedly offer charity to a brahmana. How could he retract his promise? When Bali Maharaja agreed to His request, Vamanadeva miraculously expanded Himself and Bali witnessed the entire creation resting within His body. With His first step, the Lord effortlessly covered the entire surface of the world, and by extending His body further, He covered the entire sky. With His hands He covered all directions. Then, with His second footstep, He covered the entire upper planetary system. Having comprehensively occupied everything in creation, the question remained as to where the Lord would place His third step.

Matsya Avatara

D - Dwarf Incarnation (15-24) Matsya Avatara Chapter 24 Responding to Maharaja Pariksit’s enquiry, Sukadeva Goswami narrated the pastimes of Matsya, the first incarnation of the Lord, who appeared in two different Manvantaras. When the demon Hayagriva wanted to steal the Vedic knowledge away from Lord Brahma at the time of annihilation, the Lord appeared as a fish. Matsya avatara killed the demon, saved the Vedas, and then delivered that knowledge to Brahma when he awakened from slumber. [ 26 ] When King Satyavrata, who subsisted only on water, offered shelter to a small fish and kept it in a water jug, he wasn’t aware that it was the Supreme Lord. The fish expanded His body, and though the king offered bigger and bigger residences, from a jug, to a well, to a lake, and to the sea, it was all insufficient. The King then understood the fish’s divine identity. The Lord informed him that there would be an inundation within a week during which the King and all living entities would be protected in a boat which would be attached to the transcendental fish’s horn. This indeed transpired. Having been saved, King Satyavrata offered many beautiful prayers to the Lord. In response, the Lord illuminated Satyavrata with the essence of Vedic wisdom.

Prahlada's Reassurance and Demigods Reinstated

D - Dwarf Incarnation (15-24) Prahlada's Reassurance and Demigods Reinstated Chapter 22, 23 Seeing his grandson’s incredible display of surrender, Prahlada Maharaja arrived there and reassured Bali that he was actually the fortunate recipient of the Lord’s mercy; when the Lord especially favours someone, He takes everything away. Lord Brahma and Bali’s wife, Vindhyavali, glorified the supremacy of the Lord and offered various prayers. When they requested that Bali Maharaja be released, the Lord happily agreed and promised him all protection. Seeing Bali Maharaja’s humility and sincerity, Lord Vishnu awarded him the special planet known as Sutala. Aditi’s desire to reinstate the demigods was thus fulfilled, as – Indra and the other cosmic rulers resumed their responsibilities within the universe.

Surrender

D - Dwarf Incarnation (15-24) Surrender “The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Krishna, advises, sarva-dharman parityajya mam ekam saranam vraja : “Give up all other varieties of religion and just surrender unto Me.” The common man does not appreciate such a statement by the Supreme Personality of Godhead because he thinks that during his lifetime his family, society, country, body and relatives are everything. Why should one give up any one of them and take shelter of the Supreme Personality of Godhead? But from the behaviour of great personalities like Prahlada Maharaja and Bali Maharaja we understand that surrendering to the Lord is the right action for an intelligent person. Prahlada Maharaja took shelter of Vishnu against the will of his father. Similarly, Bali Maharaja took shelter of Vamanadeva against the will of his spiritual master, Sukracarya, and all the leading demons.” (SB 8.22.9) In the Bhakti-rasamrita Sindhu (1.2.265) Rupa Goswami delineates the nine processes of devotional service, and the various personalities who perfected those practices. When he comes to atma-nivedanam , the act of complete surrender, he establishes Bali Maharaja as the shining example ( sarvasvatma-nivedane balir ). This is the ultimate goal established by Krishna at the conclusion of the Bhagavad-gita, where he implores Arjuna to abandon all religious duties ( dharma ) and embrace complete surrender. Bali Maharaja fully embodied this spirit of a Vaisnava that Bhaktivinoda Thakura sings of: “Mind, body, and family, whatever may be mine, I have surrendered at Your lotus feet, O youthful son of Nanda!” (Bhaktivinoda Thakura, Saranagati)

Surrender - Natural but Gradual

D - Dwarf Incarnation (15-24) Surrender Surrender - Natural but Gradual Such surrender is actually the easiest and most natural thing in creation. Since the essence of our being, as eternal servants of Krishna, lies in being completely aligned to the will of God, when we try to avoid it we inevitably struggle in problems and pain. Although completely natural, the reality is that the process must be gradual. In the journey of Krishna consciousness there is an external and internal surrender. We begin with the most tangible and measurable things, the external aspects of the process. Once we have embraced that, we progressively try to deepen our internal mood and consciousness. Indeed, this aligning of the activities and mind brings one to a liberated platform: “ One who engages in the transcendental service of the Lord in body, mind and word is to be considered liberated in all conditions of material existence .” (BRS 1.2.187) We begin with the externals. Following scriptural injunctions, the acaryas have prescribed a set of devotional practices which include reading, chanting, worshipping and finding practical ways to serve Krishna. These items of bhakti allow us to live and function with Krishna in the centre. Along with such devotional practices, we embrace a certain lifestyle. There are certain yamas (don’ts) and niyamas (dos) and we adopt those habits knowing that they aid the spiritual practices we are performing. Along with the personal practices and lifestyle, the practitioner also assumes a spiritual identity. They surround themselves with spiritual people, conducting their social life with spiritual elements incorporated, re-aligning their life goals and aspirations, and identifying themselves with a particular spiritual group or movement. This external surrender is indeed a seismic shift in someone’s life. Yet Krishna goes further. Surrender cannot be reduced to external adjustments. In essence, surrender means a change of consciousness and a change of heart. When defining surrender, Bhaktivinoda Thakura outlines six cardinal principles: “The six divisions of surrender are the acceptance of those things favourable to devotional service, the rejection of unfavourable things, the conviction that Krishna will give protection, the acceptance of the Lord as one’s guardian or master, full self-surrender and humility.” ( CC Madhya 22.100 ) The first two items relate to the mind, which is always accepting and rejecting. For the surrendered soul, the activities of the mind are aligned with pleasing Krishna. Indeed, Krishna explains that one should purify the mind and use it as a means for elevation. The second two items refer to our intelligence. Material intelligence is based around the consciousness of being the controller and enjoyer, calculating and concluding on immediate action and reaction, without seeing the bigger picture. For the surrendered soul, one’s intelligence is founded upon the scriptural understanding that Krishna is the controller, enjoyer and ultimate object of service. The final two items deal with the ego. Pride and selfishness haunt those who are rooted in the bodily concept of life and plagued by false ego. When one surrenders, the real ego of being a menial servant and simple instrument, brings with it a profound depth of humility and selflessness. As we live a life of surrender, our vision evolves. Instead of seeing the world and everything within it from our point of view, we’ll begin seeing it from Krishna’s point of view. He will receive the first communication in the day, the first consideration in any decision, the first show of gratitude in success or failure, and the first place in our hearts.

Previous Types of Surrender Next Sustainable Surrender Last updated 1 year ago

Sustainable Surrender

D - Dwarf Incarnation (15-24) Surrender Sustainable Surrender While aspiring for such deep surrender, our progress towards that end goal must be incremental, realistic and sustainable. If we adopt a practice of surrender which is beyond our means, we may well find we lose hope and enthusiasm altogether. In the name of surrender, we can end up neglecting ourselves and thus erode our ability to continue the journey. In our aspiration for surrender, we can often undertake rigorous commitments in spiritual practice, and accept high levels of practical spiritual responsibilities. While commendable, we must judge whether it’s sustainable. We may embrace a life which mirrors our aspirations, but we may not have the capacity to live at that level just yet. Thus, when crafting our own individual process of surrender, we must consult others to see how to bend ourselves without breaking. In the pursuance of complete self-surrender, we should ensure that there are healthy inputs on the bodily level (physical health), mental level (good relationships) and spiritual level (good sadhana ). Neglecting these vital elements will, in most cases, almost certainly impede one’s progress to pure surrender.

Types of Surrender

D - Dwarf Incarnation (15-24) Surrender Types of Surrender Some people surrender to God because they are scared; they fear the consequences of rebelling against His will, and thus embrace surrender to preserve their comfort and security. Others surrender to God out of helplessness; having tried everything else, they see no other recourse or option. Some surrender with selfish motivations in mind; they know that a powerful superior can help them achieve what they want. Beyond all such types of surrender, is a spontaneous surrender out of love. This kind of surrender, which is what Krishna recommends, is total and perfect – completely aligning our will with the Supreme will, knowing the happiness of the Lord is not separate from our own. Jesus Christ, for example, surrendered totally and willfully. On the cross his last words were, “Father, into Thy hands I commend my spirit.” (Luke, 23.46)

The Third Step

D - Dwarf Incarnation (15-24) The Third Step Chapter 21, 22 The demigods glorified the extraordinary acts of the Lord, while the demons complained and criticised. In a fit of fury, they attacked Vamanadeva, but were comfortably dispatched by the various associates of Lord. The demons were driven out, while Bali Maharaja was arrested and brought to the Lord. Lord Vishnu enquired from Bali Maharaja about where to place His third step. Failure to do so would mean instant punishment. Troubled by his inability to honour his word, Bali considered deeply what to do. He was then inspired to offer his head as the place for the third step. This is akin to those who sacrifice their entire lives to selflessly serve the Lord. The Lord thus became famed as Trivikrama, ‘He who took three great strides,’ and Urukrama, ‘He who performs wonderful acts.’

Translation
Śukadeva Gosvāmī said: O King! Although mistreated and made to break his promise by the Lord, Bali Mahārāja, with undisturbed mind, spoke the following steady words. In the Twenty-second Chapter, Bali, Prahlāda, Vindyāvali and Brahmā praise the Lord, and the merciful Lord gives benedictions to Bali. Because the Lord deceptively bound up Bali, he remains constantly as his door keeper, tied by the ropes of prema. By normal standards, Bali had been mistreated (viprakṛtaḥ) and was made to deviate from truth (bhidyamānaḥ).
Though the Lord appeared to act mischievously, Bali was fixed in his determination. Surface mischief and underlying mercy can coexist. The devotee's response is not to read appearances but to hold position.

  • What 'determination' would let me hold steady regardless of surface appearances?

Bali Mahārāja said: O best Personality of Godhead, most worshipable for all the demigods, if You think that my promise has become false, I shall certainly rectify matters to make it truthful. I cannot allow my promise to be false. Please, therefore, place Your third lotus footstep on my head.

Bali Mahārāja could understand the pretense of Lord Vāmanadeva, who had taken the side of the demigods and come before him as a beggar. Although the Lord’s purpose was to cheat him, Bali Mahārāja took pleasure in understanding how the Lord will cheat His devotee to glorify the devotee’s position. It is said that God is good, and this is a fact. Whether He cheats or rewards, He is always good. Bali Mahārāja therefore addressed Him as Uttamaśloka. “Your Lordship,” he said, “You are always praised with the best of selected verses. On behalf of the demigods, You disguised Yourself to cheat me, saying that You wanted only three paces of land, but later You expanded Your body to such an extent that with two footsteps You covered the entire universe. Because You were working on behalf of Your devotees, You do not regard this as cheating. Never mind. I cannot be considered a devotee. Nonetheless, because although You are the husband of the goddess of fortune You have come to me to beg, I must satisfy You to the best of my ability. So please do not think that I wanted to cheat You; I must fulfill my promise. I still have my body. When I place my body for Your satisfaction, please put Your third step on my head.” Since the Lord had covered the entire universe with two steps, one might ask how Bali Mahārāja’s head could be sufficient for His third step? Bali Mahārāja, however, thought that the possessor of wealth must be greater than the possession. Therefore although the Lord had taken all his possessions, the head of Bali Mahārāja, the possessor, would provide adequate place for the Lord’s third step.

— A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
Bali Mahārāja said: O most famous Lord, worshipped by all the devatās! If you think that my promise has become false, I shall make it true. I should not be made a cheater. Please, therefore, place your third lotus footstep on my head. Bali addressed the Lord in a joking way, addressing him as Uttama-śloka. After begging as a dwarf for three steps of land you then attempted to take land by three steps as the gigantic form of Trivikrama. In this way you reveal your lack of desire as a brahmacārī without greed! We devotees become mad with bliss on drinking this nectar of your fame. Though you are the husband of Lakṣmī, you beg land from a beggar like me. You act disgracefully by desiring more land by trick, cheating brāhmaṇas in the guise of a brahmacārī, showing desire for material objects, exhibiting lack of peace, showing anger and punishment to the person who gives. You show these as your natural qualities. You destroyed the intelligence of my guru who had knowledge of scriptures. You sided with Indra and others who were barely touched with a small drop of your mercy and you sided against me who became submerged in a great ocean of your sweet mercy. The poets thus glorify you as most famous. “If you consider my words false” means that actually it will be impossible for you who desire to conquer unjustly your devotee, to make the words of your devotee false. O Lord worshipped by the devatās! This means that you have been requested by the devatās to take the land from me and give it to them for their enjoyment. I will make my promise true. My words should not be cheating. Your words however cheat the devatās, since you offer to give them artha, dharma and kāma, and not the nectar of your lotus feet, when they praise you. Put your third step on my head. Do not think that since you have covered the universe by two steps, there is no use in putting your foot on my head. This act will be greater than the wealth gained from your two steps, since your taking possession of the owner of the wealth is greater than taking possession of the wealth.
If You think my promise has become false, I shall make it truthful — place Your third lotus foot on my head. Bali offers his head as the third measure. Total surrender includes the self, not just the possessions.
Reflection Questions
  • Where am I offering my possessions but not my head?
  • What 'third step' is the Lord still waiting for that would complete my promise?

I do not fear being deprived of all my possessions, living in hellish life, being arrested for poverty by the ropes of Varuṇa or being punished by You as much as I fear defamation.

Although Bali Mahārāja fully surrendered to the Supreme Personality of Godhead, he could not tolerate being defamed for cheating a brāhmaṇa-brahmacārī. Being quite alert in regard to his reputation, he thought deeply about how to prevent being defamed. The Lord, therefore, gave him the good counsel to prevent defamation by offering his head. A Vaiṣṇava does not fear any punishment. Nārāyaṇa-parāḥ sarve na kutaścana bibhyati ( Bhāg. 6.17.28 ).

tat te ’nukampāṁ susamīkṣamāṇo bhuñjāna evātma-kṛtaṁ vipākam hṛd-vāg-vapurbhir vidadhan namas te jīveta yo mukti-pade sa dāya-bhāk

“One who seeks Your compassion and thus tolerates all kinds of adverse conditions due to the karma of his past deeds, who engages always in Your devotional service with his mind, words and body, and who always offers obeisances to You is certainly a bona fide candidate for liberation.” ( Bhāg. 10.14.8 ) A devotee knows that so-called punishment by the Supreme Personality of Godhead is only His favor to correct His devotee and bring him to the right path. Therefore the punishment awarded by the Supreme Personality of Godhead cannot be compared to even the greatest benefit awarded by one’s material father, mother, brother or friend.

Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
A father, mother, brother or friend does not punish his subordinate in a thoroughly correct manner. I regard the punishment given by you, the most praiseworthy, as most exalted punishment, since it gives the best results. “But your defamation will come from being bound up by me.” Though mothers and others punish a person for a person’s benefit, they do not punish completely (na ādiśanti). Though mothers and others are praiseworthy for being benefactors in this world, those who punish to give spiritual benefit are millions of times more affectionate to a person.

Even a father or friend would not punish a subordinate this way; but because You are the most worshipable, I regard Your punishment as most exalted. Divine punishment is honor. The source dignifies the act.

Since Your Lordship is indirectly the greatest well-wisher of us demons, You act for our best welfare by posing as if our enemy. Because demons like us always aspire for a position of false prestige, by chastising us You give us the eyes by which to see the right path.

Bali Mahārāja considered the Supreme Personality of Godhead a better friend to the demons than to the demigods. In the material world, the more one gets material possessions, the more he becomes blind to spiritual life. The demigods are devotees of the Lord for the sake of material possessions, but although the demons apparently do not have the Supreme Personality of Godhead on their side, He always acts as their well-wisher by depriving them of their positions of false prestige. By false prestige one is misguided, so the Supreme Lord takes away their position of false prestige as a special favor.

Translation
Since you are indirectly the greatest benefactor of us demons, you give us the eye for destroying our blindness arising from pride. “But I am famous for helping the devatās and not the demons.” You are the indirect benefactor (guru) of the demons since you pose as their enemy. Indirect benefit is greater than direct benefit. Thus you are the supreme (parama) benefactor for us. You are not the supreme benefactor for the devatās since giving them power and wealth that they desire is not really beneficial. You give us real benefit. You give us eyes of knowledge whereas the devatās are blinded. The third person verb instead of second person is poetic license.
You are indirectly the demons' best well-wisher, acting as our enemy for our welfare. By stripping our false prestige, You give us the eyes to see the right path. Apparent opposition can be the deepest service.

Many demons who were continuously inimical toward You finally achieved the perfection of great mystic yogīs. Your Lordship can perform one work to serve many purposes, and consequently, although You have punished me in many ways, I do not feel ashamed of having been arrested by the ropes of Varuṇa, nor do I feel aggrieved.

Bali Mahārāja appreciated the Lord’s mercy not only upon him but upon many other demons. Because this mercy is liberally distributed, the Supreme Lord is called all-merciful. Bali Mahārāja was indeed a fully surrendered devotee, but even some demons who were not at all devotees but merely enemies of the Lord attained the same exalted position achieved by many mystic yogīs. Thus Bali Mahārāja could understand that the Lord had some hidden purpose in punishing him. Consequently he was neither unhappy nor ashamed because of the awkward position in which he had been put by the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

Many demons by continuous animosity toward you achieved the perfection that dedicated yogīs achieve. Although you, whose actions have wonderful effects, have punished me and bound me with ropes, I do not feel extremely ashamed and do not suffer. What to speak of me, your dedicated devotee, even the demons who hated you got your extraordinary mercy. I have been punished by you, the benefactor (tena), whose actions have great effects (bhūri-karmaṇā). I have a little shame: because of my impurity of heart.
Many enmity-filled demons reached great-yogī perfection. You serve many purposes with one act. I do not feel ashamed of arrest or aggrieved. Devotional vision reframes punishment as mercy in disguise.

My grandfather Prahlāda Mahārāja is famous, being recognized by all Your devotees. Although harassed in many ways by his father, Hiraṇyakaśipu, he still remained faithful, taking shelter at Your lotus feet.

A pure devotee like Prahlāda Mahārāja, although harassed circumstantially in many ways, never gives up the shelter of the Supreme Personality of Godhead to take shelter of anyone else. A pure devotee never complains against the mercy of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. A vivid example is Prahlāda Mahārāja. Examining the life of Prahlāda Mahārāja, we can see how severely he was harassed by his own father, Hiraṇyakaśipu, yet he did not divert his attention from the Lord even to the smallest extent. Bali Mahārāja, following in the footsteps of his grandfather Prahlāda Mahārāja, remained fixed in his devotion to the Lord, despite the Lord’s having punished him.

My grandfather Prahlāda Mahārāja, honored by your devotees, famous as a devotee, although tortured in many ways by his father Hiraṇyakaśipu, still remained surrendered to you. I should tolerate the punishment you give, since you are my deity. But you should also be affectionate to me, since you should think of me as the grandson of your devotee Prahlāda. Though he received many types of torture (vaiśasam) from his father, he remained surrendered to you.
My grandfather Prahlāda, harassed by his father in many ways, remained faithful at Your feet. Family persecution did not move him. Devotion's depth is tested precisely against those closest who oppose.

What is the use of the material body, which automatically leaves its owner at the end of life? And what is the use of all one’s family members, who are actually plunderers taking away money that is useful for the service of the Lord in spiritual opulence? What is the use of a wife? She is only the source of increasing material conditions. And what is the use of family, home, country and community? Attachment for them merely wastes the valuable energy of one’s lifetime.

The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Kṛṣṇa, advises, sarva-dharmān parityajya mām ekaṁ śaraṇaṁ vraja: “Give up all other varieties of religion and just surrender unto Me.” The common man does not appreciate such a statement by the Supreme Personality of Godhead because he thinks that during his lifetime his family, society, country, body and relatives are everything. Why should one give up any one of them and take shelter of the Supreme Personality of Godhead? But from the behavior of great personalities like Prahlāda Mahārāja and Bali Mahārāja we understand that surrendering to the Lord is the right action for an intelligent person. Prahlāda Mahārāja took shelter of Viṣṇu against the will of his father. Similarly, Bali Mahārāja took shelter of Vāmanadeva against the will of his spiritual master, Śukrācārya, and all the leading demons. People may be surprised that devotees like Prahlāda Mahārāja and Bali Mahārāja could seek shelter of the side of the enemy, giving up the natural affinity for family, hearth and home. In this connection, Bali Mahārāja explains that the body, which is the center of all material activities, is also a foreign element. Even though we want to keep the body fit and helpful to our activities, the body cannot continue eternally. Although I am the soul, which is eternal, after using the body for some time I have to accept another body ( tathā dehāntara-prāptiḥ ), according to the laws of nature, unless I render some service with the body for advancement in devotional service. One should not use the body for any other purpose. One must know that if he uses the body for any other purpose he is simply wasting time, for as soon as the time is ripe, the soul will automatically leave the body.

We are very interested in society, friendship and love, but what are they? Those in the garb of friends and relatives merely plunder the hard-earned money of the bewildered soul. Everyone is affectionate toward his wife and is attached to her, but what is this wife? The wife is called strī, which means, “one who expands the material condition.” If a person lives without a wife, his material conditions are less extensive. As soon as one marries and is connected with a wife, his material necessities increase.

puṁsaḥ striyā mithunī-bhāvam etaṁ tayor mitho hṛdaya-granthim āhuḥ ato gṛha-kṣetra-sutāpta-vittair janasya moho ’yam ahaṁ mameti

“The attraction between male and female is the basic principle of material existence. On the basis of this misconception, which ties together the hearts of the male and female, one becomes attracted to his body, home, property, children, relatives and wealth. In this way one increases life’s illusions and thinks in terms of ‘I and mine.’” ( Bhāg. 5.5.8 ) Human life is meant for self-realization, not for increasing unwanted things. Actually, a wife increases unwanted things. One’s lifetime, one’s home and everything one has, if not properly used in the service of the Lord, are all sources of material conditions of perpetual suffering under the threefold miseries ( adhyātmika, adhibhautika and adhidaivika ). Unfortunately, there is no institution in human society for education on this subject. People are kept in darkness about the goal of life, and thus there is a continuous struggle for existence. We speak of “survival of the fittest,” but no one survives, for no one is free under material conditions.

Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya

What is the use of a wife, the source of increasing material bondage? And what is the use of houses, which simple waste away life. “Why did Prahlāda ignore his father and surrender to me?” This is explained in two verses. Ātmanā mean “of the body.” Relatives steal wealth that should be used for worship of the Lord.

Only by providence have I been forcibly brought under Your lotus feet and deprived of all my opulence. Because of the illusion created by temporary opulence, people in general, who live under material conditions, facing accidental death at every moment, do not understand that this life is temporary. Only by providence have I been saved from that condition.

Bali Mahārāja appreciated the actions of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, although all the members of the demoniac families except Prahlāda Mahārāja and Bali Mahārāja considered Viṣṇu their eternal traditional enemy. As described by Bali Mahārāja, Lord Viṣṇu was actually not the enemy of the family but the best friend of the family. The principle of this friendship has already been stated. Yasyāham anugṛhṇāmi hariṣye tad-dhanaṁ śanaiḥ: the Lord bestows special favor upon His devotee by taking away all his material opulences. Bali Mahārāja appreciated this behavior by the Lord. Therefore he said, daivena nītaḥ prasabhaṁ tyājita-śrīḥ: “It is to bring me to the right platform of eternal life that You have put me into these circumstances.”

Actually, everyone should fear the so-called society, friendship and love for which he works so hard all day and night. As indicated by Bali Mahārāja by the words janād bhītaḥ, every devotee in Kṛṣṇa consciousness should always be afraid of the common man engaged in pursuing material prosperity. Such a person is described as pramatta, a madman chasing the will-o’-the-wisp. Such men do not know that after a hard struggle for life one must change his body, with no certainty of what kind of body he will receive next. Those who are completely established in Kṛṣṇa conscious philosophy and who therefore understand the aim of life will never take to the activities of the materialistic dog race. But if a sincere devotee somehow does fall down, the Lord corrects him and saves him from gliding down to the darkest region of hellish life.

adānta-gobhir viśatāṁ tamisraṁ punaḥ punaś carvita-carvaṇānām

( Bhāg. 7.5.30 )

The materialistic way of life is nothing but the repeated chewing of that which has already been chewed. Although there is no profit in such a life, people are enamored of it because of uncontrolled senses. Nūnaṁ pramattaḥ kurute vikarma. Because of uncontrolled senses, people fully engage in sinful activities by which they get a body full of suffering. Bali Mahārāja appreciated how the Lord had saved him from such a bewildered life of ignorance. He therefore said that his intelligence had been stunned. Stabdha-matir na budhyate . He could not understand how the Supreme Personality of Godhead favors His devotees by forcibly stopping their materialistic activities.

Only by good fortune have I been brought under your lotus feet and deprived of all my wealth, by you, who are the enemy of our family. With intelligence blinded by this wealth, a person does not realize the temporary nature of life where death is continually present. Ātma-ripoḥ means enemy of the family. This is praise in disguise. Actually the Lord is the best friend. Or it can mean the Lord is the enemy of the gross and subtle bodies (ātmā). He destroys them and gives liberation. Or you are the enemy of my ahaṅkāra. You have destroyed my great disease of thinking I was lord of the three worlds. Daivena means “by the good fortune of attaining birth as grandson of Prahlāda.” Persons whose intelligence is destroyed by wealth do not understand the temporary nature of the body. Being bound by the ropes of Varuṇa, Bali Mahārāja could not offer befitting respect to Prahlāda Mahārāja as he had before. Rather, he simply offered respectful obeisances with his head, his eyes being inundated with tears and his face lowered in shame.

Since Bali Mahārāja had been arrested by Lord Vāmanadeva, he was certainly to be considered an offender. Bali Mahārāja seriously felt that he was an offender to the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Certainly Prahlāda Mahārāja would not like this. Therefore Bali Mahārāja was ashamed and hung his head.

— A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda

Translation
Being bound by the ropes of Varuṇa, Bali Mahārāja could not offer befitting respect to Prahlāda Mahārāja as he had before. Rather, he simply offered respectful obeisances with his head, while eyes filled with tears and his face lowered in shame. He was ashamed of being seen by Prahlāda, since it would seen that he must have committed some offense in order to be bound up. Or he was ashamed at seeing Prahlāda, since he had suddenly forgot his constant teachings about not showing pride on the occasion of giving land. His head was lowered because of the shame.
Bound by ropes, Bali could not offer full respect; he simply bowed his head with tears, face lowered in shame. Even physical constraint does not stop reverence — only its full expression. The bow is what is possible.

Prahlāda Mahārāja said: My Lord, it is Your Lordship who gave this Bali the very great opulence of the post of heavenly king, and now, today, it is You who have taken it all away. I think You have acted with equal beauty in both ways. Because his exalted position as King of heaven was putting him in the darkness of ignorance, You have done him a very merciful favor by taking away all his opulence.

As it is said, yasyāham anugṛhṇāmi hariṣye tad-dhanaṁ śanaiḥ ( Bhāg. 10.88.8 ). It is by the mercy of the Lord that one gets all material opulence, but if such material opulence causes one to become puffed up and forget the process of self-realization, the Lord certainly takes all the opulence away. The Lord bestows mercy upon His devotee by helping him find out his constitutional position. For that purpose, the Lord is always ready to help the devotee in every way. But material opulence is sometimes dangerous because it diverts one’s attention to false prestige by giving one the impression that he is the owner and master of everything he surveys, although actually this is not the fact. To protect the devotee from such a misunderstanding, the Lord, showing special mercy, sometimes takes away his material possessions. Yasyāham anugṛhṇāmi hariṣye tad-dhanaṁ śanaiḥ .

— A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
Prahlāda Mahārāja said: My Lord, it is you who gave Bali the post of a heavenly king and now it is you who have taken it all away. I think this is good since you have been merciful to him by taking away his wealth which caused bewilderment to his mind. You did not take away from Bali what was his, but simply received again what was yours. That is a proper act.

Material opulence is so bewildering that it makes even a learned, self-controlled man forget to search for the goal of self-realization. But the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Nārāyaṇa, the Lord of the universe, can see everything by His will. Therefore I offer my respectful obeisances unto Him.

The words ko vicaṣṭe gatim ātmano yathā indicate that when one is puffed up by the false prestige of possessing material opulence, he certainly neglects the goal of self-realization. This is the position of the modern world. Because of so-called scientific improvements in material opulence, people have entirely given up the path of self-realization. Practically no one is interested in God, one’s relationship with God or how one should act. Modern men have altogether forgotten such questions because they are mad for material possessions. If this kind of civilization continues, the time will soon come when the Supreme Personality of Godhead will take away all the material opulences. Then people will come to their senses.

— A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
Bewildered by wealth, even a learned, self-controlled man, while possessing wealth, cannot see the truth about the self. I offer my respectful obeisances unto Lord of the universe, Nārāyaṇa, the witness of all people. Even a person who controls the senses, in the presence of wealth, can see the truth (gatim) about the self. No one can see. You have no fault in taking back what you have given. You are like a father who out of affection for his child, snatched from the child a sweet he has given him, understanding it will be unhealthy for him.
Material opulence is so bewildering that even the learned and self-controlled forget the goal of self-realization. The Lord sees everything. The danger is precise: opulence makes the wise forget. The cure is His vision.
Reflection Questions
  • Which recent material increase has subtly made me forget self-realization?

But Bali Mahārāja's chaste wife, afraid and aggrieved at seeing her husband arrested, after offering obeisances with downcast face and folded hands to Lord Vāmana, spoke as follows. Just as Brahmā was about to speak, Bali’s wife spoke. He remained silent out of respect for her. She begins speaking at this point. Seeing her husband bound, she was frightened of the offense he had committed. She lowered her head out of natural shyness of a woman.

Śrīmatī Vindhyāvali said: O my Lord, You have created the entire universe for the enjoyment of Your personal pastimes, but foolish, unintelligent men have claimed proprietorship for material enjoyment. Certainly they are shameless agnostics. Falsely claiming proprietorship, they think they can give charity and enjoy. In such a condition, what good can they do for You, who are the independent creator, maintainer and annihilator of this universe?

Bali Mahārāja’s wife, who was most intelligent, supported the arrest of her husband and accused him of having no intelligence because he had claimed proprietorship of the property of the Lord. Such a claim is a sign of demoniac life. Although the demigods, who are officials appointed by the Lord for management, are attached to materialistic enjoyment, they never claim to be proprietors of the universe, for they know that the actual proprietor of everything is the Supreme Personality of Godhead. This is the qualification of the demigods. But the demons, instead of accepting the exclusive proprietorship of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, claim the property of the universe for themselves through demarcations of nationalism. “This part is mine, and that part is yours,” they say. “This part I can give in charity, and this part I can keep for my enjoyment.” These are all demoniac conceptions. This is described in Bhagavad-gītā (16.13): idam adya mayā labdham imaṁ prāpsye manoratham. “Thus far I have acquired so much money and land. Now I have to add more and more. In this way I shall be the greatest proprietor of everything. Who can compete with me?” These are all demoniac conceptions.

Bali Mahārāja’s wife accused Bali Mahārāja by saying that although the Supreme Personality of Godhead had arrested him, showing him extraordinary mercy, and although Bali Mahārāja was offering his body to the Supreme Lord for the Lord’s third step, he was still in the darkness of ignorance. Actually the body did not belong to him, but because of his long-standing demoniac mentality he could not understand this. He thought that since he had been defamed for his inability to fulfill his promise of charity, and since the body belonged to him, he would free himself from defamation by offering his body. Actually, however, the body does not belong to anyone but the Supreme Personality of Godhead, by whom the body is given. As stated in Bhagavad-gītā (18.61) :

īśvaraḥ sarva-bhūtānāṁ hṛd-deśe ’rjuna tiṣṭhati bhrāmayan sarva-bhūtāni yantrārūḍhāni māyayā

The Lord is situated in the core of everyone’s heart, and, according to the material desires of the living entity, the Lord offers a particular type of machine — the body — through the agency of the material energy. The body actually does not belong to the living entity; it belongs to the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Under the circumstances, how could Bali Mahārāja claim that the body belonged to him?

Thus Vindhyāvali, Bali Mahārāja’s intelligent wife, prayed that her husband be released, by the Lord’s causeless mercy. Otherwise, Bali Mahārāja was nothing but a shameless demon, specifically described as tyakta-hriyas tvad-avaropita-kartṛ-vādāḥ, a foolish person claiming proprietorship over the property of the Supreme Person. In the present age, Kali-yuga, the number of such shameless men, who are agnostics disbelieving in the existence of God, has increased. Trying to defy the authority of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, so-called scientists, philosophers and politicians manufacture plans and schemes for the destruction of the world. They cannot do anything good for the world, and unfortunately, because of Kali-yuga, they have plunged the affairs of the world into mismanagement. Thus there is a great need for the Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement for the benefit of innocent people who are being carried away by propaganda of such demons. If the present status quo is allowed to continue, people will certainly suffer more and more under the leadership of these demoniac agnostics.

Vindhyāvali said: O my Lord! You have created the entire universe for your pastimes, but foolish, unintelligent men have claimed proprietorship for their material enjoyment. Shameless, ascending to a high position and thinking they are the doers, what can they offer to you, the creator, maintainer and destroyer? The three worlds have been created by you (te). Fools like Bali claim the worlds as theirs. What can they give to you, the creator (kartuḥ), maintainer (prabhoh) and destroyer (asyataḥ)? Genitive case is used for the dative. Among the objects sentient or insentient, which one can he claim is his, so that he can make his promise true even by giving his body? Since you create the three worlds and his body, has he not given up shame by desiring fame through offering you what is already yours? Those suffering the great disease of pride in wealth can be cured by the mercy of a good doctor. It is very suitable to tie up an offender, who has quickly ascended to a high position and suddenly falls, and who falsely identifies himself as a doer, thinking “I am the protector of the three worlds.”
Foolish men claim proprietorship for enjoyment when You created the universe for Your pastimes. Shameless agnostics 'give charity' from what is not theirs — what good can they do You? Vindhyāvali names the absurdity directly.
Reflection Questions
  • Where do I 'give charity' from what is already the Lord's, taking credit for the transfer?
  • What is my actual proprietorship, honestly assessed?

By offering even water, newly grown grass, or flower buds at Your lotus feet, those who maintain no mental duplicity can achieve the most exalted position within the spiritual world. This Bali Mahārāja, without duplicity, has now offered everything in the three worlds. How then can he deserve to suffer from arrest?

In Bhagavad-gītā (9.26) it is stated:

patraṁ puṣpaṁ phalaṁ toyaṁ yo me bhaktyā prayacchati tad ahaṁ bhakty-upahṛtam aśnāmi prayatātmanaḥ

The Supreme Personality of Godhead is so kind that if an unsophisticated person, with devotion and without duplicity, offers at the lotus feet of the Lord a little water, a flower, a fruit or a leaf, the Lord accepts it. Then the devotee is promoted to Vaikuṇṭha, the spiritual world. Brahmā drew the Lord’s attention to this subject and requested that He release Bali Mahārāja, who was suffering, being bound by the ropes of Varuṇa, and who had already given everything, including the three worlds and whatever he possessed.

Translation
By offering even water, newly grown grass, or flower buds at your lotus feet, by performing excellent worship, a sincere person attains Vaikuṇṭha. This Bali Mahārāja, without duplicity, has offered everything in the three worlds to you. How then can he deserve to suffer from arrest? His not deserving punishment is expressed by stating the opposite. He deserves much more. All men attain Vaikuṇṭha by offering water. Why then should Bali, by offering the three worlds, end up in distress?
Even water, grass, or flower buds offered without duplicity wins Vaikuṇṭha; Bali has offered everything in the three worlds — how can he deserve arrest? Brahmā uses scripture to advocate. The principle is clear.
Reflection Questions

  • What small offering, made cleanly, would change my cosmic standing more than I imagine?

The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: My dear Lord Brahmā, because of material opulence a foolish person becomes dull-witted and mad. Thus he has no respect for anyone within the three worlds and defies even My authority. To such a person I show special favor by first taking away all his possessions.

A civilization that has become godless because of material advancement in opulence is extremely dangerous. Because of great opulence, a materialist becomes so proud that he has no regard for anyone and even refuses to accept the authority of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. The result of such a mentality is certainly very dangerous. To show special favor, the Lord sometimes makes an example of someone like Bali Mahārāja, who was now bereft of all his possessions.

Material opulence makes one dull-witted and mad, defying even My authority. To such, I show special favor by taking all possessions first. The Lord's stripping is preventive medicine for the inflated.

While rotating in the cycle of birth and death again and again in different species because of his own fruitive activities, the dependent living entity, by good fortune, may happen to become a human being. This human birth is very rarely obtained.

The Supreme Personality of Godhead is fully independent. Thus it is not always a fact that a living being’s loss of all opulence is a sign of the Supreme Lord’s mercy upon him. The Lord can act any way He likes. He may take away one’s opulence, or He may not. There are varieties of forms of life, and the Lord treats them according to the circumstances, as He chooses. Generally it is to be understood that the human form of life is one of great responsibility.

puruṣaḥ prakṛti-stho hi bhuṅkte prakṛtijān guṇān kāraṇaṁ guṇa-saṅgo ’sya sad-asad-yoni-janmasu

“The living entity in material nature follows the ways of life, enjoying the three modes of nature. This is due to his association with that material nature. Thus he meets with good and evil amongst various species.” ( Bg. 13.22 ) After thus rotating through many, many forms of life in the cycle of birth and death, the living being gets a chance for a human form. Therefore every human being, especially one belonging to a civilized nation or culture, must be extremely responsible in his activities. He should not risk degradation in the next life. Because the body will change ( tathā dehāntara-prāptir ), we should be extremely careful. To see to the proper use of life is the purpose of Kṛṣṇa consciousness. The foolish living entity declares freedom from all control, but factually he is not free; he is fully under the control of material nature. He must therefore be most careful and responsible in the activities of his life.

Translation
While rotating in the cycle of birth and death again and again in different species because of his karma, the dependent living entity, by good fortune, may happen to become a human being. I am not merciful to all jīvas by taking away their wealth. I do not take from some, and give abundantly to others. Since my mercy is hard for people to understand and of various types, hear about the characteristics of my mercy. Wandering about in various bodies such as worms and insects the dependent jīva attains the human form sometimes.

Cycling through species, by good fortune one becomes human — a very rarely obtained birth. Human birth is the rare doorway. To squander it in pursuit of further opulence is unique foolishness.

If a human being is born in an aristocratic family or a higher status of life, if he performs wonderful activities, if he is youthful, if he has personal beauty, a good education and good wealth, and if he is nonetheless not proud of his opulences, it is to be understood that he is especially favored by the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

When in spite of possessing all these opulences a person is not proud, this means that he is fully aware that all his opulences are due to the mercy of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. He therefore engages all his possessions in the service of the Lord. A devotee knows very well that everything, even his body, belongs to the Supreme Lord. If one lives perfectly in such Kṛṣṇa consciousness, it is to be understood that he is especially favored by the Supreme Personality of Godhead. The conclusion is that one’s being deprived of his wealth is not to be considered the special mercy of the Lord. If one continues in his opulent position but does not become unnecessarily proud, falsely thinking that he is the proprietor of everything, this is the Lord’s special mercy.

If a human being is born in an aristocratic family, if he performs wonderful activities, if he is youthful, if he has personal beauty, education or wealth, and if he is nonetheless not proud, it is to be understood that he is especially favored by me. If a person does not have pride, which causes destruction and insult, even on attaining good birth etc. that is my mercy to a person. This is a different form of mercy from the previously mentioned mercy of taking away wealth. I do not take away his wealth, since there is no harm in his possessing that wealth.
Born to good family, of action, youth, beauty, learning, wealth — and not proud of any of these — is to be understood as especially favored by the Lord. The diagnostic is humility-amid-opulence, not opulence alone.

My pure devotee.
Although aristocratic birth and other such opulences are impediments to advancement in devotional service because they are causes of false prestige and pride, these opulences never disturb a pure devotee of the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

Devotees like Dhruva Mahārāja, who was given unlimited material opulence, have the special mercy of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Once Kuvera wanted to give Dhruva Mahārāja a benediction, but although Dhruva Mahārāja could have asked him for any amount of material opulence, he instead begged Kuvera that he might continue his devotional service to the Supreme Personality of Godhead. When a devotee is fixed in his devotional service, there is no need for the Lord to deprive him of his material opulences. The Supreme Personality of Godhead never takes away material opulences achieved because of devotional service, although He sometimes takes away opulences achieved by pious activities. He does this to make a devotee prideless or put him in a better position in devotional service. If a special devotee is meant for preaching but does not give up his family life or material opulences to take to the service of the Lord, the Lord surely takes away his material opulences and establishes him in devotional service. Thus the pure devotee becomes fully engaged in propagating Kṛṣṇa consciousness.

Translation
Although high birth and other qualifications are impediments because they are causes of arrogance and pride, they never disturb my devotee at all. However, my devotee is not bewildered by high birth etc. which are causes of disrespectfulness (stambha) and arrogance, a type of pride. The genitive case represents the instrumental case as in the phrase nāgniḥ tṛpyati kāṣṭhānām: fire is not satisfied by wood fuel. Hanta indicates amazement and “not at all” since the word yadi is not used as in the previous verse and the statement is repeated in the next verse. My dedicated devotee is the special recipient of my mercy. I give wealth to devotees like Dhruva who are distinguished from the previously mentioned persons. Being merciful to the devotee, the Lord in the beginning takes away actions, birth or wealth which are causes of obstacles for the devotee. He does not take away things he has given to the devotee. Some say that this however is not a fixed rule for the Lord who is skilful at increasing the prema of his devotee. Some give the example of the Lord taking away the wealth of the Pāṇḍavas.
Aristocratic birth and other opulences are impediments through pride, but never disturb a pure devotee. Dhruva, given unlimited wealth, still asked only for continued service. Stability is in orientation, not in level.
Reflection Questions
  • Where do I assume material removal would solve a spiritual problem rooted in orientation?
  • What did Dhruva refuse that I still chase?

Bali Mahārāja has become the most famous among the demons and nonbelievers, for in spite of being bereft of all material opulences, he is fixed in his devotional service.

In this verse, the words sīdann api na muhyati are very important. A devotee is sometimes put into adversity while executing devotional service. In adversity, everyone laments and becomes aggrieved, but by the grace of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, a devotee, even in the worst condition, can understand that he is going through a severe examination by the Personality of Godhead. Bali Mahārāja passed all such examinations, as explained in the following verses.

— A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
Famous Bali Mahārāja, foremost among the demons, has already conquered unsurpassable māyā. Though in dire circumstances, he is not bewildered. “Well, let that be, but what type of mercy of yours did Bali, your devotee, receive when you took away his wealth?” He has conquered māyā. I do not say ‘will conquer” or “is conquering.” He has already conquered māyā previously. What is the question of him having arrogance or disrespect caused by māyā? In order to destroy māyā I take away wealth and power. Even bereft of wealth, he is not bewildered. It is seen that people who are bewildered by wealth become greatly disturbed and bewildered the moment that disaster strikes.
Bali has become famous among demons and nonbelievers, for stripped of opulences he is fixed in devotional service. Adversity revealed his actual stage. Tested devotion is recognized devotion.

Although bereft of his riches, fallen from his original position, defeated and arrested by his enemies, rebuked and deserted by his relatives and friends, although suffering the pain of being bound and although rebuked and cursed by his spiritual master, Bali Mahārāja, being fixed in his vow, did not give up his truthfulness. It was certainly with pretension that I spoke about religious principles, but he did not give up religious principles, for he is true to his word.

Bali Mahārāja passed the severe test put before him by the Supreme Personality of Godhead. This is further proof of the Lord’s mercy toward His devotee. The Supreme Personality of Godhead sometimes puts a devotee to severe tests that are almost unbearable. One could hardly even live under the conditions forced upon Bali Mahārāja. That Bali Mahārāja endured all these severe tests and austerities is the mercy of the Supreme Lord. The Lord certainly appreciates the devotee’s forbearance, and it is recorded for the future glorification of the devotee. This was not an ordinary test. As described in this verse, hardly anyone could survive such a test, but for the future glorification of Bali Mahārāja, one of the mahājanas, the Supreme Personality of Godhead not only tested him but also gave him the strength to tolerate such adversity. The Lord is so kind to His devotee that when severely testing him the Lord gives him the necessary strength to be tolerant and continue to remain a glorious devotee.

Translation
Although bereft of his riches and position, thrown down and tied up by his enemies, deserted by his relatives and friends, suffering pain and cursed by his guru, Bali Mahārāja, being fixed in his vow, did not give up his truthfulness. I spoke about dharma deceptively, but he did not give up speaking the truth. Even though I have thrown him into an ocean of danger, he is not bewildered. It goes without saying that he will not give up his convictions. I spoke about dharma deceptively. At first I spoke falsely of adharma as if it were dharma with such words as the following: na hy etasmin kule kaścin niḥsattvaḥ kṛpaṇaḥ pumān pratyākhyātā pratiśrutya yo vādātā dvijātaye I know that even until now, no one taking birth in your family has been poor-minded or miserly. No one has refused to give charity to brāhmaṇas, nor after promising to give charity has anyone failed to fulfill his promise. SB 8.19.3 Then I spoke of dharma as if it were adharma. vipralabdho dadāmīti tvayāhaṁ cāḍhya-māninā tad vyalīka-phalaṁ bhuṅkṣva nirayaṁ katicit samāḥ Being falsely proud of your possessions, you promised to give me land, but you could not fulfill your promise. Therefore, because your promise was false, you must live for a few years in hellish life. SB 8.21.34 Still, he did not give up truth. In such circumstances, others would be untruthful, according to the maxim “when cheated, cheat.” Though affectionate to my devotee, I have caused him this trouble in order to show the world his fixed devotion and fortitude.
Stripped, fallen, defeated, arrested, abandoned by relatives, bound and cursed by guru — yet Bali did not abandon truthfulness. The Lord names the test in full. Bali passed because he was true to his word.

The Lord continued: Because of his great tolerance, I have given him a place not obtainable even by the demigods. He will become King of the heavenly planets during the period of the Manu known as Sāvarṇi.

This is the mercy of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Even if the Lord takes away a devotee’s material opulences, the Lord immediately offers him a position of which the demigods cannot even dream. There are many examples of this in the history of devotional service. One of them is the opulence of Sudāmā Vipra. Sudāmā Vipra suffered severe material scarcity, but he was not disturbed and did not deviate from devotional service. Thus he was ultimately given an exalted position by the mercy of Lord Kṛṣṇa. Here the word mad-āśrayaḥ is very significant. Because the Lord wanted to give Bali Mahārāja the exalted position of Indra, the demigods might naturally have been envious of him and might have fought to disturb his position. But the Supreme Personality of Godhead assured Bali Mahārāja that he would always remain under the Lord’s protection ( mad-āśrayaḥ ).

Translation
I have given him a place not obtainable even by the devatās. He will be under my shelter. He will become Indra during the Sāvarṇi Manvantara. You should not think that I have taken away his wealth. He has attained a place better than that of the devatās. Sutala has become most astonishing now. It should be understood that Sutala became like the palace that Kṛṣṇa gave to Śrīdāma. And one should not think that he has not lost the position of Indra. He will become Indra during Sāvarṇi Manvantara. One should not say that the devatās will give him trouble in Sutala. He is under my shelter. I will be his door keeper, staying awake all the time to protect him.
Because of his tolerance, I have given him a place not obtainable even by demigods — he will be Indra in Sāvarṇi's manvantara. Promotion through tolerance, on a delayed schedule. The Lord plays long games.

Until Bali Mahārāja achieves the position of King of heaven, he shall live on the planet Sutala, which was made by Viśvakarmā according to My order. Because it is especially protected by Me, it is free from mental and bodily miseries, fatigue, dizziness, defeat and all other disturbances. Bali Mahārāja, you may now go live there peacefully.

Viśvakarmā is the engineer or architect for the palatial buildings in the heavenly planets. Therefore, since he was engaged to construct the residential quarters of Bali Mahārāja, the buildings and palaces on the planet Sutala must at least equal those on the heavenly planets. A further advantage of this place designed for Bali Mahārāja was that he would not be disturbed by any outward calamity. Moreover, he would not be disturbed by mental or bodily miseries. These are all extraordinary features of the planet Sutala, where Bali Mahārāja would live.

In the Vedic literatures we find descriptions of many different planets where there are many, many palaces, hundreds and thousands of times better than those of which we have experience on this planet earth. When we speak of palaces, this naturally includes the idea of great cities and towns. Unfortunately, when modern scientists try to explore other planets they see nothing but rocks and sand. Of course, they may go on their frivolous excursions, but the students of the Vedic literature will never believe them or give them any credit for exploring other planets.

Because it is especially protected by me, in that place the inhabitants are free from mental and bodily miseries, fatigue, exhaustion, defeat and all other disturbances. Bali Mahārāja, you may now go and live there peacefully. Sutala has been specially (vi) constructed by Viśvakārmā, with superiority to Amaravatī. By the will of the Lord at that moment Sutala became greater than Svarga. Yat means “where.”
Until then, live on Sutala — built by Viśvakarmā by My order, free from miseries, fatigue, defeat, and disturbance. The 'demoted' devotee is housed in luxury we cannot conceive. Demotion as worldly view; promotion as actual.

O Bali Mahārāja [Indrasena], now you may go to the planet Sutala, which is desired even by the demigods. Live there peacefully, surrounded by your friends and relatives. All good fortune unto you.

Bali Mahārāja was transferred from the heavenly planet to the planet Sutala, which is hundreds of times better than heaven, as indicated by the words svargibhiḥ prārthyam. When the Supreme Personality of Godhead deprives His devotee of material opulences, this does not mean that the Lord puts him into poverty; rather, the Lord promotes him to a higher position. The Supreme Personality of Godhead did not ask Bali Mahārāja to separate from his family; instead, the Lord allowed him to stay with his family members ( jñātibhiḥ parivāritaḥ ).

Go to Sutala, desired even by demigods; live peacefully with friends and relatives. All good fortune. The Lord does not separate Bali from family — he goes with his household. Spiritual elevation does not require family abandonment.

Because there you will see My supreme prowess, your materialistic ideas and anxieties that have arisen from your association with the demons and Dānavas will immediately be vanquished.

The Lord assured Bali Mahārāja of all protection, and finally the Lord assured him of protection from the effects of bad association with the demons. Bali Mahārāja certainly became an exalted devotee, but he was somewhat anxious because his association was not purely devotional. The Supreme Personality of Godhead therefore assured him that his demoniac mentality would be annihilated. In other words, by the association of devotees, the demoniac mentality is vanquished.

satāṁ prasaṅgān mama vīrya-saṁvido bhavanti hṛt-karṇa-rasāyanāḥ kathāḥ

( Bhāg. 3.25.25 )

When a demon associates with devotees engaged in glorifying the Supreme Personality of Godhead, he gradually becomes a pure devotee.

Thus end the Bhaktivedanta purports of the Eighth Canto, Twenty-second Chapter, of the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, entitled “Bali Mahārāja Surrenders His Life.”
