  • kṛṣṇa kṛṣṇa — O Kṛṣṇa, O Kṛṣṇa
Vocative repeated. The name is the prayer; doubling intensifies the cry. Gauḍīya: this verse is one of the scriptural seeds of nāma-saṅkīrtana — the freed soul's first utterance is Kṛṣṇa's name, twice.
  • mahā-yogin — O master of mysticism
Compound: mahā (great) + yogin (one possessed of yoga). Kṛṣṇa is yogeśvara — the Lord of all yogic potency. The infant is addressed by His highest title; the freed siddhas see no contradiction.
  • ādyaḥ — the original
From √ad — 'the first.' Gauḍīya: kṛṣṇas tu bhagavān svayam (SB 1.3.28) — Kṛṣṇa is svayaṁ-bhagavān, the original Person from whom all avatāras descend. The siddhas' address confirms the chapter's siddhānta.
  • puruṣaḥ — the Supreme Person
Nominative of puruṣa. Gauḍīya distinguishes puruṣa-avatāras (Mahā-Viṣṇu, Garbhodakaśāyī, Kṣīrodakaśāyī) from Kṛṣṇa-svayam. Here puruṣa is qualified by ādya — the original Person, Kṛṣṇa Himself.
  • vyakta-avyaktam — manifest and unmanifest
Compound: vyakta (manifest) + avyakta (unmanifest). The whole material cosmos in both phases is His rūpa. Gauḍīya frame: acintya-bhedābheda — the world is His energy, simultaneously one with and different from Him.
O Lord Kṛṣṇa, Lord Kṛṣṇa, Your opulent mysticism is inconceivable. You are the supreme, original person, the cause of all causes, immediate and remote, and You are beyond this material creation. Learned brāhmaṇas know [on the basis of the Vedic statement sarvaṁ khalv idaṁ brahma] that You are everything and that this cosmic manifestation, in its gross and subtle aspects, is Your form.

The two demigods Nalakūvara and Maṇigrīva, because of their continuing memory, could understand the supremacy of Kṛṣṇa by the grace of Nārada. Now they admitted, “That we should be delivered by the blessings of Nārada Muni was all Your plan. Therefore You are the supreme mystic. Everything — past, present and future — is known to You. Your plan was made so nicely that although we stayed here as twin arjuna trees, You have appeared as a small boy to deliver us. This was all Your inconceivable arrangement. Because You are the Supreme Person, You can do everything.”

Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya

Commentary

Krsna could ask, "Why are you two who are devatas paying respects to me, a cowherd boy tied to a mortar?" They answer with this verse. The word Krsna is repeated twice to indicate that they spoke together. "You are the supreme person (parah purusah), bhagavan. But you, the cowherd boy, are the original, svayam bhagavan (adyah). Oh one who possess inconceivable power (mahayogin), whose bondage is not subject to logic, as you can liberate us, how is it possible for you , the form of the universe, to be bound up? With this intention they speak this verse.

Jīva Gosvāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

“Though we were great offenders, we have received your great mercy. What you have done is proper.” In this way they begin to speak. O parabrahman with human form (kṛsṇa)! They say his name twice out of great bliss or because of bewilderment of prema. However, it is the nature of the tongue to be attracted to Kṛṣṇa’s name. Or they repeated his name in order to have him face them, when they had attained a sober condition, since Kṛṣṇa was overwhelmed by his childhood pastime of pulling the mortar. O lord endowed with inconceivable and unlimited powers (mahā-yogin)! You are superior to Mahā-viṣṇu (puruṣaḥ paraḥ), the puruṣa who glances at prakṛti. You are his source. Though you are the source, you appear in many forms like Mahā-nārāyaṇa. Still you are Svayam Bhagavān (ādyaḥ). This is shown in the first verse of Brahma-saṁhitā: īśvaraḥ paramaḥ kṛṣṇaḥ. Because you are complete in qualities, this mercy you show us is suitable. Though you are Bhagavān, they know you as Brahman, the great form which is the basis of everything, or the effect—the universe. (brahmaṇaḥ rūpam). Another version has brāhmaṇāḥ (the brāhmaṇas know this). Your mercy is possible because we regard ourselves as your servants.

Kṛṣṇa is the ādya-puruṣa, the cause of all causes — the entire viśva, gross and subtle, is His form, and His arrangements are inconceivable.
Practical Applications
  • When an unexpected reversal or rescue arrives today, name it aloud as Kṛṣṇa's inconceivable arrangement rather than chance or your own cleverness.
  • Open your day by addressing Him by name — 'Kṛṣṇa, Kṛṣṇa' — acknowledging Him as the supreme original person, not an impersonal force.
  • Look at one ordinary object — a tree, a meal, a stranger — and consciously see it as part of His vyakta-rūpa, His manifest form.

A river-traveler, looking at the surface, sees only ripples and currents — but the boatman knows the bed beneath, the spring at the source, and the sea at the mouth. Kṛṣṇa is the river's source, riverbed, current, and sea. To see only the toddler-form (the surface) and miss the ādya-puruṣa (the source) is the human predicament; Nalakūvara and Maṇigrīva, freshly cleansed, see the whole length at once.
