  • antareṇa — between
Indeclinable, 'in the middle of.' The exact placement matters: Kṛṣṇa positions Himself precisely between the trees. Gauḍīya commentators note that He is always antara-yāmin (the inner controller) — externally He enacts antara as a spatial position.
  • yamayoḥ — of the twins
Genitive dual of yama — twin. The trees are addressed by the same root that names Yamarāja, lord of death. The trees are a death-state (sthāvaratā); Kṛṣṇa enters between the twin deaths to reveal their hidden life.
  • ātma-nirveśa-mātreṇa — as soon as He entered
Compound: ātman + nirveśa (entry) + mātra (the mere measure of). 'By the mere fact of entering.' Kṛṣṇa exerts no effort; His presence alone is the lever. Gauḍīya: His līlā always carries this lightness — no strain, only sweetness.
  • tiryak — crossways
Indeclinable. The single word that performs the entire līlā — the mortar turns sideways and lodges. Sanskrit's economy: one syllable carries the mechanical pivot of the whole episode.
Having thus spoken, Kṛṣṇa soon entered between the two arjuna trees, and thus the big mortar to which He was bound turned crosswise and stuck between them.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
Having thus spoken, Kṛṣṇa soon entered between the two arjuna trees, and thus the big mortar to which He was bound turned crosswise and stuck between them.
Commentary

Thinking in this way he went between the pair of trees (yamau). Just as he entered between the trees, the mortar became crooked.

Śrīdhara Svāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

He thought “For this purpose the two offenders have become trees, for participating in my childhood pastimes.” Then he crawled towards the trees. The mortar was pulled at right angles by his will. Tiryak means crooked or obliquely. One version has bhṛtam. This suggests the mortar was conscious by being related to the Lord. Or all articles in the Lord’s pastimes are eternity, knowledge and bliss. That applies to the rope also. Otherwise they could not possibly be related to the Lord who is eternity, knowledge and bliss. Hari-vaṁśa says tad dāma tasya prabhav ād abhavat drḍham: by his power the rope became strong. PadmaPurāṇa says namas te tu dāmne sphurad dīpti- dhāmne: I offer respects to the shining rope.

Kṛṣṇa wedges Himself between the twin arjuna trees — His apparent bondage is the very setup for liberating those who have been bound for ages.
Practical Applications
  • Notice today where what feels like a constraint on you is actually Kṛṣṇa positioning Himself to break a long-standing bondage in your life.
  • Refuse to read setbacks as evidence of His absence — bring one such situation before Him this evening and ask what He is dragging into the open.
  • Speak to Kṛṣṇa directly about a 'stuck' relationship or pattern you have endured for years, and trust His timing to turn it crosswise and crack it open.

A child working a wedge between two stuck logs — push it crossways and the logs split apart. Kṛṣṇa, dragging the wooden mortar behind Him, slips between the twin trees and turns the mortar crosswise; the bondage of a hundred celestial years splits open in an instant. The wedge is small; the cleaving is total.
