  • devarṣiḥ — the great saint Nārada
Nominative of devarṣi — repeating the title from SB 10.10.5. The verse closes Nārada's appearance with the same address it opened with: he came as devarṣi, acted as devarṣi, departs as devarṣi. Consistency of svarūpa across action.
  • nārāyaṇa-āśramam — to his own āśrama, Nārāyaṇa-āśrama
Compound: Nārāyaṇa + āśrama (hermitage). Nārada's residence is named after Nārāyaṇa Himself — his external life is non-different from his upāsya. Gauḍīya frame: the devotee's place of residence is Vaikuṇṭha-extension because his consciousness is Vaikuṇṭha-extension.
  • yamala-arjunau — twin arjuna trees
Compound: yamala (twin) + arjuna (the tree, white-barked, terminalia arjuna). Their new identity is announced at the verse's close. Gauḍīya tradition reads even the species — arjuna, also Pārtha's name — as foreshadowing the personal encounter with Kṛṣṇa to come.
Śukadeva Gosvāmī continued: Having thus spoken, the great saint Devarṣi Nārada returned to his āśrama, known as Nārāyaṇa-āśrama, and Nalakūvara and Maṇigrīva became twin arjuna trees.

Arjuna trees are still found in many forests, and their skin is used by cardiologists to prepare medicine for heart trouble. This means that even though they are trees, they are disturbed when skinned for medical science.

Translation
Śukadeva Gosvāmī continued: Having thus spoken, the great saint Devarṣi Nārada returned to his āśrama, known as Nārāyaṇa-āśrama, and Nalakūvara and Maṇigrīva became twin arjuna trees.

Commentary

This verse shows that he had come at his own will. They were born at the same time (yamala—couple) as arjuna trees. Since arjuna would also be the name of Kṛṣṇa’s cowherd friend in Vraja that they got the same name was his mercy. Thus making them arjuna trees as described in this verse was Nārada’s mercy.

Commentary

Nārada went to Vaikuṇṭha (nārāyaṇāśramam). Thinking he made amgreat offense by cursing the servants of Śiva, he went there to get forgiveness, or to pray that his words would come true. Or he went to Badarikāśrama since he was ashamed to meet the Lord directly, feeling a direct request was inappropriate. He went there to request his guru, who had descended there. Or he went to see the Lord there out of devotion. He would inform his guru of what he had done by chance on the way. They were born at the same time (yamala—couple) as arjuna trees. Since arjuna would also be the name of Kṛṣṇa’s cowherd friend in Vraja, that they got the same name was his mercy. Thus making them arjuna trees as described in this verse was Nārada’s mercy.

Even cursed in tree-form, Nalakūvara and Maṇigrīva await Kṛṣṇa's touch — no condition is so fallen that the Lord's mercy cannot reach and reclaim it.
Practical Applications
  • Notice one area today where you feel 'stuck like a tree' — rooted in habit — and offer that exact stuckness to Kṛṣṇa rather than waiting to first improve it.
  • When you encounter another being's suffering — even a plant being skinned for medicine — let it remind you that consciousness pervades all bodies and respond with ahiṁsā in some small choice.
  • Refuse to despair over a long-standing fault; instead, do one concrete sādhana act today (chant, hear, serve) trusting that the same Lord who liberated the yamala-arjunas reaches you too.

An archer, having loosed his arrow with perfect aim, simply lowers the bow and walks home — he does not need to follow the shaft to its target. Nārada lets fly the curse, sees that it has lodged correctly, and returns to Nārāyaṇa-āśrama. The shaft will do its work without him.
