  • vasudeva-nandanau — the two sons of Vasudeva
Compound: Vasudeva + nandana (son, joy-bringer). Vasudeva is named here, not Nanda — the Mathurā women know the political genealogy, not the Vraja one. Yogamāyā's veil is still partly in place even at the city's edge.
  • vayasyaiḥ — by Their young friends
Instrumental plural of vayasya — agemate, peer-friend. The Vraja-sakhās. Sakhya-rasa walks into Mathurā with Him; aiśvarya never displaces it. Gauḍīyas emphasize: Kṛṣṇa's surrounding is constitutive of His Person, not decorative.
  • tvaritāḥ — hurriedly
Past participle of √tvar — to hasten. The same word the gopīs are described by when running to the rāsa-dance (10.29). Mathurā's women receive a small foretaste of the gopī-impulse — but they will return home; the gopīs never could.
  • utsukāḥ — eager
From ut + √suc — burning-out, with great longing. The technical bhāva-word for the longing that drives one to abandon dharma. Mathurā's women feel it; the gopīs feel it absolutely.
The women of Mathurā hurriedly assembled and went forth to see the two sons of Vasudeva as They entered the city on the King’s road, surrounded by Their cowherd boyfriends. Some of the women, my dear King, eagerly climbed to the roofs of their houses to see Them.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
The women of Mathurā hurriedly assembled and went forth to see the two sons of Vasudeva as They entered the city on the King's road, surrounded by Their cowherd boyfriends. Some of the women, my dear King, eagerly climbed to the roofs of their houses to see Them.
Commentary

In order to see Krsna and Balaram enter Mathura on the wide road, the women of Mathura came forward in groups (samiyuh). Others climbed onto the roof tops.

Jīva Gosvāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

Three verses describe the scene as the two boys entered completely (sampraviṣṭa) into the city. The women came close (samīyuḥ) to see them as they entered but because of the crowds they climbed on the roofs. Though some tried to prevent them they could not stop them because of their zeal. Śukadeva calls out to Parīkṣit with the same zeal.

Concepts
Jiva
Mathurā's women hurriedly gather to see the two sons of Vasudeva; some climb their roofs in eagerness. Even in a city of fear, the news of Kṛṣṇa's arrival mobilizes ordinary women to undignified urgency.
Reflection Questions
  • What 'roof' would you climb today for one more glimpse of Kṛṣṇa?
  • Where do you maintain the dignity of indifference when eagerness would be more honest?

The women of Mathurā move toward Kṛṣṇa the way iron filings move toward a magnet — abandoning whatever was in their hands. Aiśvarya-puri reacts to mādhurya the moment it walks through the gate.
