Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 10.18.24
Blended reading (Sanskrit + English inline)
-
uvāha-kṛṣṇaḥ-bhagavān
—
the Supreme Personality of Godhead Kṛṣṇa carried
All three terms together — uvāha (carried) + kṛṣṇaḥ + bhagavān. The Bhāgavatam piles the divine titles on top of the act of carrying a friend. Gauḍīyas read the redundancy as emphasis: yes, Bhagavān, yes, the same one, yes, carrying him.
-
śrīdāmānam
—
His devotee and friend Śrīdāmā
Śrī (auspicious wealth) + dāma (rope, garland). The name encodes the gopa-aesthetic — wealth as a rope of relationship. Śrīdāmā is one of the twelve principal sakhās in Gauḍīya rasa-literature.
-
parājitaḥ
—
being defeated
Aparajita is one of Kṛṣṇa's epithets — the unconquered. Here He is parājita — defeated. The same verbal stem flipped by a prefix. The play's grammar permits what doctrine denies.
-
bhadrasenaḥ
—
Bhadrasena
Another named sakhā — bhadra (auspicious) + sena (army). Less-mentioned than Śrīdāmā but among the inner circle. The verse takes care to name even the secondary sakhās.
-
rohiṇī-sutam
—
the son of Rohiṇī (Balarāma)
Rohiṇī's son — a maternal naming that softens Balarāma's normally formidable register. The verse names Him this way precisely when He is about to be abducted, evoking the protective shadow of His mother.
One may ask how Bhagavān, the Supreme Lord, can be defeated by His boyfriends. The answer is that in His original form, God has a most playful nature and occasionally enjoys submitting to the strength or desire of His loving friends. A father may sometimes playfully fall down on the ground when struck by his beloved little child. These acts of love give pleasure to all parties. Thus Śrīdāmā agreed to ride on Lord Kṛṣṇa’s shoulders to please his beloved friend, who happened to be Bhagavān, the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
They joked, “Your Bhagavān has been defeated by us people of Vraja.” Balarāma is called the son of Rohiṇī since Pralamba did not know about his power.
Kṛṣṇa is bhagavān, he who shows qualities like being controlled by the devotees. Or, “How could Śrīdāmā tolerate having Kṛṣṇa carry him?” He is bhagavān, most fond of fun. However he is also one’s dear life (kṛṣṇaḥ). In order to have his fun, everything depends on the affection of the devotee. The son of Rohiṇī is mentioned because Pralamba though that Balarāma was completely different from Kṛṣṇa. Thus he thought of killing Balarāma because he was irritated by the affectionate relationship of the two.
- Where do I refuse to playfully lose to those I love?
- What act of voluntary 'carrying' the other could deepen a relationship this week?
Bhagavān carries Śrīdāmā, Bhadrasena carries Vṛṣabha, and a demon carries Balarāma. The triad is photographed in one verse — true sakhya, true sakhya, false sakhya. The disguise is about to be tested by weight.
