The sannyāsī, completely satisfied in the self, should live on alms begged from door to door. Not being dependent on any person or any place, he should always be a friendly well-wisher to all living beings and be a peaceful, unalloyed devotee of Nārāyaṇa. In this way he should move from one place to another.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
Surrendered to Nārāyaṇa, the sannyāsī, completely satisfied in the self, not dependent on any person or any place, a well-wisher to all living beings, and peaceful, he should move about alone.
The renunciate lives on alms begged from door to door, satisfied in the self, friendly to all beings, peacefully devoted to Nārāyaṇa. Real renunciation is not bitter; it is friendly. Wandering and warmth combine because the inner shelter is steady.
Reflection Questions
  • Can you imagine inner satisfaction so steady that begging for food would not erode it?
  • Where does your renunciation lean toward bitterness rather than friendliness?
