A person in the renounced order of life may try to avoid even a dress to cover himself. If he wears anything at all, it should be only a loincloth, and when there is no necessity, a sannyāsī should not even accept a daṇḍa. A sannyāsī should avoid carrying anything but a daṇḍa and kamaṇḍalu.

Translation
If he wears clothing, he should wear only a loincloth and outer covering. When there is no emergency situation, he should not accept material things he has already given up, but should accept the signs of renunciation like the staff.
He should not accept what is given up (tyaktam), things associated with material people, other than the marks of the sannyāsī like the staff. If there is some emergency he can wear what was given up (normal clothing) in order to protect the body.

Personal Guidance
A sannyāsī may even avoid clothing beyond a loincloth and carry nothing but a staff and water pot. Renunciation is concrete and uncluttered. Possessions accumulate not just outside but inside; what we own we tend.
Reflection Questions
- How many of your possessions actually demand maintenance from your attention?
- What could you let go of this week to reclaim mental space?
