the vānaprastha should eat.
A person in vānaprastha life should not eat grains grown by tilling of the fields. He should also not eat grains that have grown without tilling of the field but are not fully ripe. Nor should a vānaprastha eat grains cooked in fire. Indeed, he should eat only fruit ripened by the sunshine.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
A person in vānaprastha life should not eat grains grown by tilling the fields. He should also not eat grains that have grown without tilling of the field but are not fully ripe. Nor should he eat grains cooked by fire. Indeed, he should eat only food ripened by the sunshine. Akālataḥ means unripe.
A vānaprastha does not eat tilled grains, unripe wild grains, or grains cooked in fire — only sun-ripened fruit. The diet itself becomes austere. What you eat and how it is prepared shapes the stage you can sustain.
Reflection Questions
  • Where does your diet block, rather than support, the spiritual stage you aspire to?
  • What simple food restriction would actually advance your practice?
