To ruin the sage’s spiritual practice, Lord Indra sent Cupid, beautiful celestial singers, dancing girls, the season of spring and the sandalwood-scented breeze from the Malaya Hills, along with greed and intoxication personified.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
Indra sent Cupid, Gandharvas, Apsarās, the season of spring and the sandalwood-scented breeze from the Malaya Hills, along with greed and intoxication personified. He sent the son of passion, greed (rajas-toka) and intoxication.
Indra sends Cupid, celestial singers, dancing girls, spring, and a sandalwood breeze. Distraction comes packaged as beauty and pleasure, not as obvious evil. The most effective opposition to sadhana is the most charming.
Reflection Questions
  • Which 'charming distraction' is currently most effective at pulling me from practice?
  • What small structural change would lower its access?
