  • uddharṣā — jubilant
Compound: ud (up) + harṣa (joy). Joy that bubbles up. The bhakta's wife had not stopped loving him during the poverty; the joy is the same love finally given permission to be visible.
  • rūpiṇī śrīḥ iva — as if the goddess of fortune (Lakṣmī) had manifested her form
rūpiṇī (formed, manifest) + śrī (Lakṣmī) + iva (as if). The poet's striking comparison: the brāhmaṇa's wife appears in the moment of reunion as Lakṣmī herself. Gauḍīya commentary: chastity is itself Śrī; when chastity is honored by Bhagavān, the chaste woman radiates Lakṣmī's quality.
  • ākarṇya — hearing
Gerund of ā + √karṇ (to hear). She heard before she saw — sound preceding sight, śravaṇa preceding darśana. The order mirrors the bhakti-limbs' order (śravaṇam kīrtanam… then smaraṇam, sevana, darśana).
  • ati-sambhramā — extremely excited
Compound: ati (extreme) + sambhrama (agitation, eager hurry). The wife's body cannot stand still. Gauḍīya bhāva-śāstra recognizes sambhrama as a sañcārī-bhāva in vipralambha (separation-bhāva); here it bursts at the moment separation ends.
When she heard that her husband had arrived, the brāhmaṇa’s wife quickly came out of the house in a jubilant flurry. She resembled the goddess of fortune herself emerging from her divine abode.

Śrīla Śrīdhara Svāmī points out that since Lord Kṛṣṇa had turned Sudāmā’s home into a heavenly abode, everyone living there now possessed beautiful bodies and attire appropriate to the residents of heaven. Śrīla Viśvanātha Cakravartī adds this insight: The night before, Sudāmā’s poor, emaciated wife had been sleeping in rags under a crumbling roof, but when she woke in the morning she found herself and her house wonderfully changed. Only for a moment was she confused; she then realized that this opulence was the Lord’s gift to her husband, who must be on his way home. Thus she prepared to greet him.

Translation
When she heard that her husband had arrived, the brāhmaṇa 's wife quickly came out of the house in a jubilant flurry. She resembled the goddess of fortune herself emerging from her divine abode.
Commentary

His wife had fallen asleep at night with withered breasts and body, and ragged clothing, in the house with broken walls and roof. Waking up in the morning and finding her body and house transformed in this way, she was struck with astonishment for a moment, and then concluded that all this wealth had been given by Krsna. Then she went out to meet her husband.

Jīva Gosvāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

Hearing from the servants sent on the road, she then came to meet him. She was like Lakṣmī or Rukmiṇī in beauty. She came out of the house which was like Vaikuṇṭha.

Sudāmā's wife, transformed too, rushed out like Lakṣmī from her abode. The Lord's mercy flows outward — it includes not just the devotee but the spouse who supported the devotion.
Reflection Questions
  • Who has supported my spiritual life and shares in its blessings?
  • How can I acknowledge that shared inheritance?

A wife who has waited through every hungry year hears her husband at the gate and rushes out — and at that moment she is no longer the woman of cold porridge but Śrī herself stepping from her abode. The bhakta's wife, by her chastity, has become Lakṣmī-rūpiṇī in the moment Bhagavān's blessing arrives.

Sītā at Ayodhyā's gate

When Rāma returned from exile, Sītā stepped out to receive him and Vālmīki records that she seemed to outshine the city's lamps. Sudāmā's wife's emergence parallels Sītā's: chastity married to longing produces, in the moment of reunion, a brilliance the Bhāgavatam calls Lakṣmī-like. The pati-vratā is, in Vaiṣṇava theology, structurally close to Śrī.
