  • mīmāṁsamānam — who was deeply pondering
Present participle of √man with desiderative — to investigate, reflect. The same root that names Mīmāṁsā philosophy. Sudāmā is in the act of weighing the evidence; Kṛṣṇa interrupts his mīmāṁsā with a procession.
  • amara-prabhāḥ — whose effulgent complexions were like the demigods'
Compound: amara (deathless ones) + prabhā (radiance). The servants assigned to Sudāmā's home shine like demigods — a quiet repetition of verses 6–7's amartya-durlabhāḥ pledge.
  • mahā-bhāgam — most fortunate
Compound: mahā (great) + bhāga (share, portion). The servants address Sudāmā as most fortunate — and they are right, but their reckoning runs through the palaces, while his runs through the embrace. Gauḍīya reading: the bhakta and the world rate his fortune by different scales; both come out high.
  • gīta-vādyena — with singing and instrumental music
Compound: gīta (song) + vādya (instrument). The chapter records the wealth as not merely material — it is musical. Sudāmā returns to a saṅkīrtana, not just to a treasury.
As he continued to ponder in this way, the beautiful men — and maidservants, as effulgent as demigods, came forward to greet their greatly fortunate master with loud song and instrumental music.

As explained by Ācārya Viśvanātha Cakravartī, the word pratyagṛhṇan (“they acknowledged in turn”) indicates that first Sudāmā accepted the servants within his mind, deciding “My Lord must want me to have them,” and in response to the visible change in his attitude, they approached him as their master.

Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
As he continued to ponder in this way, the beautiful men—and maidservants, as effulgent as demigods, came forward to greet their greatly fortunate master with loud song and instrumental music.
Commentary

Verifying that the servants had been given by the Lord, he decided to accept them. After that, they approached and responded by accepting him as their master (praty agrhnan).

Jīva Gosvāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

“How did these persons with divine forms attain such glory though they were serving the brāhmaṇa who was so poor?” He was most fortunate. This astonished everyone. This had created their good fortunate.

Śrīdhara Svāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

He was most fortunate (mahā-bhāgavam) because of attaining such wealth or being a friend of the Lord. Or at this time he developed a special shining form.

Beautiful servants came to greet him with song and music — the new household acknowledging its master. Within seconds, Sudāmā mentally accepted them as the Lord's gift and they responded in kind.
Reflection Questions
  • Where am I refusing inner acceptance of a gift I have already received?
  • What would inner accepting look like in concrete terms?

A wandering father returning home is met at the gate by a procession of musicians who already know his name. Sudāmā has not yet entered the door; the gift is already singing him in.
