  • ajāya — to the unborn
Aja — 'unborn'. Standard Upaniṣadic epithet (Kaṭha, Śvetāśvatara). Gauḍīyas read it as denoting Bhagavān's transcendence of conditioned birth while still allowing His descents (avatāras) — which appear-as-birth but are not.
  • brahmaṇe — to the Absolute (Brahman)
Dative of Brahman. In Gauḍīya theology, Brahman names the impersonal aspect — only the bodily effulgence of Bhagavān. The same Person Bhūmi addresses includes Brahman; He is its source.
  • ananta - śaktaye — to the One whose energies are unlimited
Compound: ananta (endless) + śakti (potency). Bhagavān has innumerable śaktis, classically grouped into three (cit, jīva, māyā). 'Unlimited' is not a vague intensifier here — it is theological precision.
  • parama - ātman — O Supreme Soul
Recurs from verse 25. Bhūmi's prayer cycles through Paramātmā multiple times — He is what she is grieving toward, the Soul of her dead son and of herself.
Obeisances unto You of unlimited energies, the unborn progenitor of this universe, the Absolute. O Soul of the high and the low, O Soul of the created elements, O all-pervading Supreme Soul, obeisances unto You.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
Obeisances unto You of unlimited energies, the unborn progenitor of this universe, the Absolute. O Soul of the high and the low, O Soul of the created elements, O all-pervading Supreme Soul, obeisances unto You.
Jīva Gosvāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

Though you are the son of Vasudeva, you have all powers. That is explained in this verse.

Śrīdhara Svāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

You are without a cause, existing at all times (ajāya). You are the soul of causes like mahat-tattva and effects like the universe. Or you are the soul of elevated beings like Brahmā and low beings like trees. You are the soul of the jīvas. Not only one soul exists but the many jīvas who are different. And you are their antaryāmī (paramātman). Or though you have a limited form as the son of Vasudeva, you are spread everywhere inside and outside, having unlimited, astonishing powers. That is described in the verse. You are not transformed with birth (ajāya) or the stages following birth. You are the cause of the universe. “But is it not contradictory to be without transformation and to create the universe?” Because you are the supreme Lord it is possible. You are the form of Brahman. You possess unlimited powers. Or the verse shows that the Lord is the source of all attainments of the devotees. I offer respects to the cause of understanding of Brahmā, or the cause of the universe for Lord Brahmā (brahmaṇe janayitre). Showing that the puruṣa is the source of Brahmā, that form is further described. I offer respects to that universe, which arises from Visnu (ajāya). It is caused by the Lord’s unlimited śakti. It is astonishing. By this creation, the Lord’s great affection for Brahmā is shown. Or “Does Brahmā create the universe?” Yes. But by your astonishing śakti (ananta-śaktaye). “For my devotees it is fine, but why promote bhakti to ātmārāmas?” It is because of the strength of your mercy. O soul of fathers (para) and mothers (avara)! Promoter of caring for sons with affection! You have greater mercy than parents. O dearest to all (paramātmān)! Everyone’s mercy arises because they attain a drop of your ocean of mercy.

Reflection Questions
  • Could you address Kṛṣṇa with both cosmic and intimate language in one prayer?
  • Where do you split worship into 'big' and 'small' versions?

Bhūmi addresses Him as ananta-śakti — unlimited in His energies — and then names Him 'Soul of the superior and the inferior'. The pair (para / avara) is not a hierarchy He surveys from outside; He is the Soul of both. Gauḍīya acintya-bhedābheda compressed: same in essence, distinct in expression.
