  • sisṛkṣuḥ — desiring to create
Desiderative of √sṛj (to create). The form itself encodes the verse's point — creation begins with the Lord's intention; it is not a mechanical emanation.
  • asaṁvṛtaḥ — uncovered (by the modes)
A- (not) + sam + √vṛ (covered together). The crucial Gauḍīya word: even when Bhagavān 'assumes' a guṇa, He is not covered by it — He stands clear of His own instrumentation. Sets Vaiṣṇava theology against any pantheist conflation.
  • pradhānam — material nature (in its undifferentiated state)
Pradhāna — Sāṅkhya's term for primal prakṛti. Bhūmi names the technical Sāṅkhya categories (kāla, pradhāna, puruṣa) and then declares Him distinct from all three — Vaiṣṇavism's classical move against any monist collapse.
  • jagat - pate — O Lord of the universe
Compound: jagat (universe, lit. 'the moving') + pati (lord). Jagat literally means 'that which goes' — the universe as motion. Bhagavān is its master.
  • paraḥ — transcendent, separate
From pṛ (to lead beyond). The verse's final word — Bhūmi insists on the Lord's distinct, transcendent identity even after listing every category He inhabits.
Desiring to create, O unborn master, You increase and then assume the mode of passion. You do likewise with the mode of ignorance when You wish to annihilate the universe and with goodness when You wish to maintain it. Nonetheless, You remain uncovered by these modes. You are time, the pradhāna, and the puruṣa, O Lord of the universe, yet still You are separate and distinct.

The word jagataḥ in the third line of this verse indicates that the functions of creation, maintenance and annihilation are here mentioned in a cosmic context. The word utkaṭam indicates that when a particular function is being carried out, whether universal creation, maintenance or annihilation, the particular material quality associated with that function becomes predominant.

Translation
Desiring to create, O unborn master, You increase and then assume the mode of passion. You do likewise with the mode of ignorance when You wish to annihilate the universe and with goodness when You wish to maintain it. Nonetheless, You remain uncovered by these modes. You are time, the pradhāna, and the puruṣa, O Lord of the universe, yet still You are separate and distinct.
Commentary

According to the time, you carry out creation, maintenance and destruction of the universe through your maya sakti. You contain the activated raja, tama and sattva gunas, but are not covered by them like the jivas. Time, maya and the jivas are all eternal and are yourself, being your energies, but you are different from all these energies by your svarupa sakti (parah).

Jīva Gosvāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

You alone (vai) accept rajoguṇa (utkaṭam) since creation cannot take place with equilibrium. O lord, you are capable of creating this variegated universe (prabho). By your nature you protect the universe (jagat-pate). You are not covered by the actions of creation, maintenance and destruction. Or though you accept ignorance for destruction, you are not covered by it.

Desiring to create, You assume passion; for annihilation, ignorance; for maintenance, goodness — yet remain unaffected. The Lord uses modes without being used by them; engagement without entanglement.
Reflection Questions
  • Where do you assume engagement means entanglement?
  • How could you use the modes without being used by them?

A king plays three roles in his own court — he commissions the play, performs the play, and watches the play — yet remains the king throughout. Bhagavān assumes rajas to create, tamas to dissolve, sattva to maintain; the modes are His costumes, never His skin. Gauḍīyas insist on this distinction against any reading that makes Him reducible to prakṛti's drift.
