Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 10.58.24
Blended reading (Sanskrit + English inline)
-
sandiṣṭaḥ
—
requested
From sam + √diś — instructed. Kṛṣṇa is the one Viśvakarmā receives orders from. Gauḍīya: even the celestial architect builds at Bhagavān's signal; civilizational works begin in His mind.
-
viśvakarmaṇā
—
by Viśvakarmā
The celestial architect. Builder of Indra's palace, Laṅkā, Dvārakā, and Indraprastha. The same hands that built Rāvaṇa's city now build the city of dharma — Gauḍīyas: the artisan is one; the patron determines the rasa.
-
adbhutam
—
amazing
Wonder-causing. Adbhuta is one of the nine rasas of literary tradition. The Bhāgavatam tags Indraprastha with this rasa-word — the city is itself a poem in stone.
-
pārthānām
—
for the sons of Pṛthā
Plural genitive. The city is built for the brothers as a group — not for Yudhiṣṭhira alone. Gauḍīya: bhakti is given to households, not just individuals; the gift sustains a kinship.
Śrīla Viśvanātha Cakravartī mentions that this city was constructed before the burning of the Khāṇḍava forest and hence before the Lord found His bride Kālindī.
The order of events is : first, the building of the city, then the burning of the Khandhava forest, then the building of the assembly hall and then gaining Kalindi as his wife. Being requested by the Pandavas, he had Visvakarma build a city.
The Lord acted for the benefit of the Pāṇḍavas in another way. This is a previous incident, explained in four verses. The order of events is this. The city was built. Then the Khāṇḍava forest was burned. Then Arjuna took the assembly hall from that place. Finally Kṛṣṇa accepted Kālindī. The word eva indicates that Kṛṣṇa was under the control of Pāṇḍavas. At their request alone, he had the city built. The city was most astonishing because it was variegated (vicitram), endowed with multifarious splendors from the fourteen worlds.
The Lord acted for the benefit of the Pāṇḍavas in another way. This is a previous incident, explained in four verses. Only because of the Pāṇdavas request (eva) he who is directly svayam bhgvavān (kṛṣṇaḥ) had the city built by Viśvakarmā. It was most astonishing, indescribable or beyond all human capacity because it was endowed with the various beauties of the fourteen worlds. It was greater than Indra’s city.
- Where do you ask too small when the Lord could build you a city?
- What architectural-scale grace might be available?
When a master architect raises a new city, the buildings are not merely shelter — they are the visible doctrine of the king who commissioned them. Indraprastha is Kṛṣṇa's gift to His friends through the hand of Viśvakarmā: dharma made of stone.
