  • ahitaḥ hataḥ — the enemy has been killed
Past participles: ahita (non-friend, enemy) + hata (slain). The gopīs name Kaṁsa formally — the diction shifts to courtly news-report. They are pretending to take an interest in politics.
  • agha-kṛt — the cause of suffering
Compound: agha (sin, suffering) + kṛt (maker). Kaṁsa as agha-kṛt — the suffering-maker. Gauḍīyas note: agha is the same word used for the demon Aghāsura whom Kṛṣṇa killed earlier in Canto 10.
  • āptaiḥ — with His well-wishers
Past participle of √āp (to attain) — those who have 'attained,' i.e., proven their position. The gopīs use a polite distancing word for the new Mathurā retinue.
  • acyutaḥ — Lord Kṛṣṇa
From a + cyuta — 'one who never falls.' The gopīs use a name that emphasizes Kṛṣṇa's reliability — with a hint of irony, since to them He has just fallen out of Vraja.
The gopīs said: It is very good that Kaṁsa, the enemy and persecutor of the Yadus, has now been killed, along with his followers. And it is also very good that Lord Acyuta is living happily in the company of His well-wishing friends and relatives, whose every desire is now fulfilled.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
The gopīs said: It is very good that Kaṁsa, the enemy and persecutor of the Yadus, has now been killed, along with his followers. And it is also very good that Lord Acyuta is living happily in the company of His well-wishing friends and relatives, whose every desire is now fulfilled.
Commentary

"It is good (distya) that the enemy (ahitah) has been killed."

Jīva Gosvāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

Having been somewhat consoled by their memories, the gopīs then spoke to show that they had spontaneously experienced his sphūrtis during separation in the prakaṭa manifestation. Ah (aho)! Are we happy with this message or not? His happiness is our happiness. With that intention they first rejoice. Since the Yadus have attained unlimited happiness, there is no worry for their needs. He is happy. He does not deviate from that happiness (acyutaḥ). Previously Kṛṣṇa had received great suffering because of Kaṁsa. Now that is not so. By good fortune, his enemy (ahitaḥ) who made the Yadus suffering (agha-kṛt) is dead. Kṛṣṇa is happy with the Yadus whom he has attained (āptaiḥ).

It is good that Kaṁsa has been killed and Acyuta lives happily with friends and relatives whose every desire He fulfills. The gopīs rejoice for others even from their own loss; love can graduate beyond jealousy to genuine celebration.
Reflection Questions
  • Where do you struggle to celebrate others' fortune that does not include you?
  • Could you intentionally rejoice for someone today without subtracting?

The gopīs hear that Kaṁsa is slain and the Yadus are safe — and their first response is wifely concern for Kṛṣṇa's welfare. 'Good for Him,' they say. They cannot quite manage celebration. The relief is for Him; the wound for themselves remains.
