Important Words
-
āśu
—
quickly
Āśu = swiftly, at once. Bhagavān, who waited years to fulfill the dakṣiṇā, now speaks in urgency. The guru's claim brooks no delay; only the guru's situation makes Bhagavān impatient.
-
guru - putraḥ
—
son of My spiritual master
Guru-putra = guru's child. The phrase frames the entire rescue: Kṛṣṇa is not rescuing some boy; He is rescuing the guru's son specifically, because guru-sevā extends to guru-family-sevā.
-
pradīyatām
—
must be presented
Passive imperative of pra + √dā — let him be given. Imperative addressed to the ocean. Bhagavān gives the world its commands when the cause is sevā.
-
grastaḥ
—
seized
Past participle of √gras — to swallow, devour. The same verb used for the time-swallowing power of kāla. Here the wave is described as a grasping mouth — the ocean's act is being precisely diagnosed.
-
mahatā ūrmiṇā
—
by a mighty wave
Ūrmi = wave. Bhagavān names the agent — the great wave — not the demigod. The diagnosis will be corrected by the ocean's reply: the wave was an effect; the cause was a daitya (verse 40).
The Supreme Lord Kṛṣṇa addressed the lord of the ocean: Let the son of My guru be presented at once — the one you seized here with your mighty waves.

Translation
The Supreme Lord Kṛṣṇa addressed the lord of the ocean: Let the son of My guru be presented at once—the one you seized here with your mighty waves.

Commentary
Kṛṣṇa then showed his powers (bhagavān). The son should be delivered here with the same body, without decay (pra—dīyatām). Because you are a devatā this is possible for you to do. You devoured him here in Prabhāsa (iha).

Personal Guidance
Kṛṣṇa addresses the ocean: present the son of My guru — the one you seized with your mighty waves. The Lord asks directly; even the ocean is held accountable for what it has taken.
Reflection Questions
- What in your life has been 'seized by the waves' that you've never asked for back?
- Could direct address to the apparent agent be a real step?
Analogy
Bhagavān commands the ocean directly: 'present at once the son of My guru — the boy your mighty wave seized.' The same Lord who five verses ago accepted a guru's instruction now issues a sovereign command to the sea, citing not His own authority but the guru's claim on the son.
