  • aśru - dhārābhiḥ — with showers of tears
Aśru-dhārā = streams of tears. In Gauḍīya rasa-śāstra, aśru is one of the eight sāttvika-bhāvas — bodily symptoms of mature prema. The parents are not weeping from grief but from the breach of long-restrained love.
  • sneha - pāśena — by the rope of affection
Sneha is the technical Gauḍīya term for one specific rung in vātsalya's ladder (sneha → māna → praṇaya → rāga → anurāga → bhāva → mahābhāva). The chapter quietly uses the proper rasa-vocabulary.
  • bāṣpa - kaṇṭhau — whose throats were full of tears
Bāṣpa = teardrops; kaṇṭha = throat. The throat-block of stambha/svara-bheda, classical sāttvika lakṣaṇas. Their silence is not absence of words but presence of too much bhāva for words.
  • vimohitau — overwhelmed
Vi + √muh — completely bewildered (by sneha). The same root as the Yogamāyā of verse 1 (mohinīm). Their bewilderment is Yogamāyā's gift, not its curse.
  • āvṛtau — enveloped
Past participle of ā + √vṛ — covered, wrapped. They are wrapped in sneha as a baby is wrapped in cloth — the verb makes the rope of verse 11 into a swaddling-cloth of love.
Pouring out a shower of tears upon the Lord, His parents, who were bound up by the rope of affection, could not speak. They were overwhelmed, O King, and their throats choked up with tears.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
Pouring out a shower of tears upon the Lord, His parents, who were bound up by the rope of affection, could not speak. They were overwhelmed, O King, and their throats choked up with tears.
Jīva Gosvāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

The word ca indicates all the items mentioned. They were permeated internally and externally with prema which was like a rope weapon, inescapable and long. They could not understand anything (vimohitau). Tears were in their throats so they could not speak a word. All they did was stand there, showered with tears like an abhiṣeka. O king! This condition of being filled with prema can be understood by you. All this behaviour should not be seen by Nanda, since Kṛṣṇa treated both Vasudeva and Nanda as his father (but not in the other’s presence).

Śrīdhara Svāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

They could not speak at all (ca) because their throats were choked with tears. They were completely bewildered—they could not understand anything. They showered tears and soaked Kṛṣṇa, because they were covered with ropes of prema completely (āvṛtau), which were tight and long. O king! Being naturally affectionate, you can understand this.

Jiva
Tears pouring on Him, His parents, bound by the rope of affection, cannot speak — overwhelmed, choked with tears. Real intimate moments don't require articulation; tears say what words can't.
Reflection Questions
  • Where do you fill silence with words when tears would do the deeper work?
  • What 'rope of affection' do you keep loose because you fear its tightness?

The 'rope of affection' (sneha-pāśa) binding Vasudeva and Devakī recalls the rope Yaśodā tried to use on baby Kṛṣṇa — except this rope tightens around them, not around Him. He is bound by their tears because He chose to be; that is the only rope strong enough to hold Bhagavān.

The two ropes of Yaśodā and Devakī

In SB 10.9, Yaśodā tries to bind Kṛṣṇa with rope after rope, each two fingers too short, until He consents. Here in Mathurā, the same Lord stands inside a different rope — sneha-pāśa, the noose of affection — and lets His parents bind Him with tears alone. Gauḍīyas connect the two scenes: dāma-bandhana in Vraja and sneha-bandhana in Mathurā are one and the same līlā of the unbindable consenting to be bound.

Viśvanātha notes that bāṣpa-kaṇṭha (throat blocked with tears) is precisely the sāttvika-bhāva of stambha — paralysis from intensity of bhakti-rasa, listed among the eight bodily transformations of prema.
