  • śyena - vegaḥ — with the speed of a hawk
Compound: śyena (hawk) + vega (speed). Cf. verse 36, where Kaṁsa is also compared to a śyena. The Bhāgavatam keeps the bird-of-prey imagery for the demons — fast, predatory, but small under the Lord's hand.
  • muṣṭī kṛtya — having made the two fists
Compound idiom: muṣṭi (fist) + kṛtya (having made). The grammar of preparation — Cāṇūra has to convert his hands into weapons. Kṛṣṇa's hand is always already a hand and never needs to be 'made into' a weapon.
  • vakṣasi — on the chest
Locative of vakṣas. The chest where Śrīvatsa rests, where Lakṣmī lives. Cf. SB 10.83.41: vakṣaḥ-sthala-stha (resting on the chest). The demon strikes the seat of Śrī — and Śrī does not move.
  • abādhata — he struck (with intent to harm)
Imperfect of √bādh — to oppress, harm. Stronger than mere 'hit'. The verb implies an attempt at injury; the next verse will show that the verb's intent is exhausted in the trying.
Furious, Cāṇūra attacked Lord Vāsudeva with the speed of a hawk and struck His chest with both fists.

It appears that Cāṇūra, realizing he was being defeated, became furious and made a final attempt to defeat Lord Kṛṣṇa. The demon certainly had the spirit of a good fighter, but if he hoped for victory, he was certainly in the wrong place at the wrong time with the wrong person.

Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
Furious, Cāṇūra attacked Lord Vāsudeva with the speed of a hawk and struck His chest with both fists.
Commentary

Canura struck (avadhata) on the chest.

Jīva Gosvāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

After becoming tired, Cāṇūra moved away, but then attacked with the speed of a hawk. Using both fists at once to strike Kṛṣṇa, Cāṇūra showed his great strength and his skill in fighting. Since Kṛṣṇa was the lord full of all powers (bhagavantam) Cāṇūra was foolish to attack him. Cāṇūra showed his cruel nature in attacking Vasudeva’s son (vāsudevam).

Furious, Cāṇūra attacks like a hawk with both fists to Kṛṣṇa's chest. Even strong demons make a last attempt — the spirited fighter goes down swinging.
Reflection Questions
  • Where in your inner life is a demon making its last hawk-strike?
  • How do you stay steady when threats peak at the moment of defeat?

Cāṇūra, furious, strikes the Lord's chest with both fists — striking the seat of Lakṣmī herself with bare hands. Like a man punching the sun, his arms are about to discover what they have already touched.
