  • parivṛḍhau — the two leaders
Dual of parivṛḍha — chief, head. The boys select two leaders — a quiet acknowledgement that even in sakhya-rasa, hierarchy is voluntarily reconstituted. Gauḍīyas note that prema-equality coexists with reverent ranking.
  • rāma-janārdanau — Balarāma and Kṛṣṇa (as Janārdana)
Janārdana — agitator of people, or He who removes their distress. The verse pairs Rāma with the vraja-savior epithet. Gauḍīyas read the pair as ādi-vigraha — the original divine duality from which all līlā emerges.
  • kṛṣṇa-saṅghaṭṭinaḥ — members of Kṛṣṇa's party
Saṅghaṭṭin — joined-with, associated. The same word will later name the sakhās' eternal affiliation in nitya-līlā. Gauḍīya commentators read team-membership in 10.18 as a rehearsal of eternal sakhā-yūtha alignment.
  • rāmasya — of Balarāma
Genitive of Rāma — here, Balarāma. The verse balances Kṛṣṇa-saṅghaṭṭa with rāma-saṅghaṭṭa — the two camps are named symmetrically. Sakhya does not erase the duality; it ritualises it.
  • apare — others
The 'others' are not lesser; they are simply on Balarāma's team. Gauḍīyas note that even the syntactic 'others' in Vraja are eternal nitya-siddhas. There are no extras in Vṛndāvana.
The cowherd boys chose Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma as the leaders of the two parties. Some of the boys were on Kṛṣṇa’s side, and others joined Balarāma.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
The cowherd boys chose Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma as the leaders of the two parties. Some of the boys were on Kṛṣṇa's side, and others joined Balarāma.
Commentary

Parivrdhau means the two heroes. Some went to the side of Krsna and the others to the side of Balarama.

Commentary

The boys were followers of either Kṛṣṇa or Balarāma, though they had equal friendship with both boys. However to produce rasa in the game, Kṛṣṇa had boys of Balarāma’s group in his group and Balarāma had Kṛṣṇa’s boys in his group. The friendship of Balarāma and Kṛṣṇa however remained intact. Similarly it is described in Hari-vaṁśa during water games that Balarāma had Kṛṣṇa’s sons on his side and Kṛṣṇa had Balarāma’s sons on his side. Thus Śrīdāmā and others were in Balarāma’s group. Rāma indicates that Balarāma would enjoy the game (and killing Pralamba). Janārdana indicates that by being requested (ardana) to be a leader by all the boys (jana), Kṛṣṇa would fulfill his desire to have Pralamba killed.

Śrīdhara Svāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

The boys chose Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma as leaders since there was no difference between them in their good qualities. Kṛṣṇa was he who gives pain to the demonic people (like Pralamba) or he who is requested by his devotees (janārdanaḥ). Kṛṣṇa was requested by the devotees to be one of the leaders. His group was formed first because everyone had affection for him. On the other side were Kṛṣṇa’s friends like Śridāmā and Vṛṣabha who knew the hints made by Kṛṣṇa. Similarly it is described in Hari-vaṁśa during water games that Balarāma had Kṛṣṇa’s sons on his side and Kṛṣṇa had Balarāma’s sons on his side.

The boys make Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma the team leaders, and join one or the other. Even the natural sorting in a group reveals devotion — whom we attach to in play exposes whom we love.
Reflection Questions
  • In moments of casual choice, whose team am I drawn to, and what does that reveal?
  • Where am I jumping on a team out of social pressure rather than love?

The two-team structure of Vraja's afternoon mirrors the two-pronged disclosure of the Absolute — Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma, sweetness and strength, śyāma and gaura. The cowherd boys do not divide arbitrarily; they ratify a primordial pair.
