Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 10.16.62
Blended reading (Sanskrit + English inline)
-
mat - ākrīḍe
—
at the place of My pastime
Compound: mat (My) + ākrīḍa (playground). The technical Gauḍīya term for a līlā-sthāna. Vraja is mat-ākrīḍa — and within Vraja, every specific spot (Kāliya-ghāṭa, Govardhana, Yamunā-tīra) is itself mat-ākrīḍa.
-
upoṣya
—
fasting
From upa+√vas — to fast. Anuṣṭhāna — observance — at a līlā-place. Gauḍīya: fasting itself is a minor limb; what makes it powerful is the location and the smaraṇa it enables.
-
smaran - arcet
—
while remembering, should worship
Phrase: smaran (remembering) + arcet (should worship). Two limbs of bhakti combined: smaraṇam and arcanam (the fifth and seventh). The Lord prescribes integrated practice.
-
sarva - pāpaiḥ - pramucyate
—
is freed from all sins
Phrase: sarva (all) + pāpaiḥ (from sins) + pramucyate (is freed). The standard scriptural reward, here attached not to a vague observance but to the specific remembrance of THIS pastime.
According to the ācāryas, the Lord spoke this verse to make it clear to Kāliya that he could by no means remain in the Yamunā lake. Although the Lord had mercifully pardoned the serpent and ordered him to go to the ocean with all his associates, Kāliya should not even consider requesting to remain in the lake, because it was now to become a holy place for spiritual pilgrims.
"For these reasons you should leave this lake. Here people bathe, perform tarpana, fast, meditate and worship me to free themselves of sin. If you stay they cannot do this."
By offering water etc, one becomes free of the effects of poisonous water. If one fasts in a holy place, thinks of me and worships me, he becomes free of three types of sin along with the desires as well (pra—mucyate).
“Since the lake has been contaminated with poison by us how can the humans and animals now use it?” The Lord offers Kāliya a blessing in order to purify the lake. By offering water or bathing at this place one becomes free of the effects of poisonous water. If one fasts for Ekādaśī at this place, thinks of me and worships me, he becomes free of three types of sin along with the desires as well (pra—mucyate). Or he becomes freed from all peopḷe who are opposed to me (sarva-pāpaiḥ). He will be free from seeing non-devotees.
- Which past 'battle-site' in my life has secretly become a holy place I should revisit?
- What pilgrimage of memory could become my purification today?
Bathing here, offering this water to the demigods, fasting and worshipping Me — and remembering Me — frees one from all sins. The site of the līlā becomes a tīrtha. Wherever Kṛṣṇa has played, the play sanctifies the place; remembrance there is amplified. This is the theology of dhāma the Gosvāmīs will recover.
