King Indra, being very pleased with Hariścandra, offered him a gift of a golden chariot. Śunaḥśepha’s glories will be presented along with the description of the son of Viśvāmitra.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
Indra, pleased with Hariścandra, offered him a gift of a golden chariot. Śunaḥśepha's glories will be presented later. “Later” means in relation to the story about the son of Viśvāmitra.
Indra rewards Hariścandra with a golden chariot. When we finally fulfill long-delayed commitments, surprising blessings often arrive — but they are the byproduct, not the point.
Reflection Questions
  • Am I more interested in the 'golden chariot' than in the honoring of the original promise?
  • Where have I let the prospect of reward distort the purity of an act of duty?
