Purañjaya agreed to kill all the demons, on the condition that Indra would be his carrier. Because of pride, Indra could not accept this proposal, but later, by the order of the Supreme Lord, Viṣṇu, Indra did accept it and became a great bull carrier for Purañjaya.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
Indra became a great bull, and consented to be the carrier of Purañjaya by the order of the Supreme Lord Viṣṇu, soul of the universe. “If Indra becomes my carrier, then I will kill the demons.” Indra, out of shame, refused to be his carrier, but by the order of Viṣṇu, he became a huge bull and carried Purañjaya.
Indra's pride first refused service, but the Lord's direct order overcame it. When even devas need divine instruction to set aside pride and serve, we ordinary souls should not expect humility to come without similar reminders.
Reflection Questions
  • Where is pride currently preventing me from accepting a role beneath my self-image?
  • Whose instruction in my life is being heard but quietly disobeyed because of pride?
