Formerly, there was a devastating war between the demigods and the demons. The demigods, having been defeated, accepted Purañjaya as their assistant and then conquered the demons. Therefore this hero is known as Purañjaya, “he who conquered the residence of the demons.”
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
Formerly, there was a devastating war between the devatās and the demons. The devatās, having been defeated, accepted Purañjaya as their assistant. There was a war similar to the destruction of the universe. During that war Purañjaya was accepted as an ally by the devatās.
Even the demigods sometimes need human help to win their battles. Cooperation across very different levels of being is built into the Lord's arrangement — no one is too small to be needed.
Reflection Questions
  • Where might I be needed by someone 'higher' than me — a senior, a teacher, a community — more than I realize?
  • Whom 'lower' or younger than me am I underestimating as a potential ally?
