Nābhāga then said, “These riches belong to me. The great saintly persons have delivered them to me.” When Nābhāga said this, the black-looking person replied, “Let us go to your father and ask him to settle our disagreement.” In accordance with this, Nābhāga inquired from his father.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
"The wealth belongs to me. The sages have given it to me." Then the stranger said, “Let us ask your father." In accordance with this, Nābhāga inquired from his father. Nābhāga (mānavaḥ) said “This belongs to me.” The question should be asked to your father concerning our dispute. The last sentence is Śukadeva’s statement.
Rather than fighting, Nābhāga proposes consulting his father about the dispute. The mature response to a competing claim is appeal to authority, not escalation.
Reflection Questions
  • Where am I escalating a dispute when one quick call to a senior would settle it?
  • Whom do I trust enough to arbitrate a real conflict in my life?
