Translation
Śukadeva Gosvāmī continued: O King, Śaryāti, another son of Manu, was a ruler completely aware of Vedic knowledge. He gave instructions about the functions to be performed for the second day of the sacrifice by the descendants of Aṅgira. The Third Chapter describes how Śaryāti’s daughter Sukanyā married the sage named Cyavana, and later in his dynasty Kakudmī’s daughter married Balarāma. Brahmiṣṭhaḥ means he was learned in the Vedas. Thus he gave instructions about the activities for the second day of a sacrifice of Aṅgira.
Śaryāti, fluent in the Vedas, instructs Aṅgirā's descendants on second-day sacrificial duties. Real Vedic kingship is not just power but operative scholarship in the service of yajña.
Reflection Questions
  • Where am I content to be a 'patron' of practice when I should be its detailed practitioner?
  • What specific knowledge would my service require me to actually master, not delegate?
