By the semen of Vasudeva in the womb of Devarakṣitā, nine sons were born, headed by Gadā. Vasudeva, who was religion personified, also had a wife named Sahadevā, by whose womb he begot eight sons, headed by Śruta and Pravara.

Translation
Vasudeva, by Devarakṣitā, another sister of Devakī, bore nine sons, headed by Gadā. Vasudeva, by Sahadevā, sister of Devakī, begot eight sons.
Personal Guidance
Devarakṣitā bears nine sons headed by Gadā; Sahadevā bears eight sons headed by Śruta. The patient enumeration leads us right to the verses about Devakī — but takes its time getting there.
Reflection Questions
- What is the quality of my own attention as we approach the climactic verses?
- Could I let the slow buildup actually season my reception of the Lord's appearance?
