From the womb of Pauravī came twelve sons, including Bhūta, Subhadra, Bhadrabāhu, Durmada and Bhadra. Nanda, Upananda, Kṛtaka, Śūra and others were born from the womb of Madirā. Bhadrā [Kauśalyā] gave birth to only one son, named Keśī.

Translation
From the womb of Pauravī came twelve sons, including Bhūta, Subhadra, Bhadrabāhu, Durmada and Bhadra. Nanda, Upananda, Kṛtaka, Śūra and others were born from the womb of Madirā. Bhadrā gave birth to only one son, named Keśī.
Kauśalyā means his wife Bhadrā.
Personal Guidance
Pauravī produces twelve sons; Madirā produces Nanda, Upananda, Kṛtaka, Śūra and others; Bhadrā has only Keśī. Each wife produces a differently shaped family — and one is mentioned for having borne a single son.
Reflection Questions
- Where am I judging women by the number of sons they bore, against the spirit of scripture itself?
- How could I honor the 'only one' branch as much as the 'twelve' branch?
