By offering my water to maintain the life of this poor caṇḍāla, who is struggling to live, I have been freed from all hunger, thirst, fatigue, trembling of the body, moroseness, distress, lamentation and illusion.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
By offering water to maintain the life of this poor caṇḍāla, who is struggling to live, I have been freed from all hunger, thirst, fatigue, trembling of the body, moroseness, distress, lamentation and illusion. “But you should drink a little of the remaining water, since you are suffering from thirst.” But I am free from hunger and thirst by offering water to save the life of a suffering living entity.
Giving water to the caṇḍāla, Rantideva says he is freed from hunger, thirst, fatigue, and illusion. The act of self-emptying generosity dissolves the very deprivations one was suffering.
Reflection Questions
  • Where in my own life has giving relieved me more than receiving would have?
  • Whose deprivation, attended to, might free me from my own?
