pāpa-niścayāḥ
determined to commit a greatly sinful act, or the personified sins.
The sons of Kārtavīryārjuna were determined to commit sinful deeds. Therefore when they saw Jamadagni sitting by the side of the fire to perform yajña and meditating upon the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is praised by the best of selected prayers, they took the opportunity to kill him.

Translation
When they saw Jamadagni sitting by the side of the sacrificial fire, meditating upon the Supreme Lord, who is praised by the best prayers, those most sinful sons killed him.
Personal Guidance
They strike when Jamadagni is meditating on the Lord. Most attacks on devotional life come at the moment of deepest absorption — precisely because that is the moment we are least defended.
Reflection Questions
- When during my own practice am I most likely to be 'attacked' by distraction, doubt, or interruption?
- How could the environment of my deepest practice be made more secure?
