O great hero, my dear son Paraśurāma, you have unnecessarily killed the king, who is supposed to be the embodiment of all the demigods. Thus you have committed a sin.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
O great hero! O Paraśurāma! You have unnecessarily killed the king, who is supposed to be the embodiment of all the devatās. Thus you have committed a sin.
Jamadagni surprises us — he tells Paraśurāma he sinned by killing the king. Elders sometimes see costs in our 'righteous' actions that we did not — even necessary violence carries weight.
Reflection Questions
  • Whose elder's judgment of a 'righteous' action of mine deserves more weight than I have given it?
  • Where might I have been technically right but spiritually owed a correction?
